Why am the only one without an IPOD? Lon? I mean, if you won't spring for the hat . . . . .
in hindsight i would NEVER EVER EVER buy another IPOD again. One of those other MP3 players MUST have better software. This thing CONSTANTLY frustrates me, between losing about 10 percent of my songs, in addition to the lack of ability to transfer songs FROM the Ipod TO your computer.
Plus, if you hold off enough time, you should be able to get a MP3 player that will play FLAC or SHN files ! That'd be so SWEET!! Can you imagine 120 gigs of DEAD FLACs ?

How long since y'all played that bonus disc from The Grateful Dead Movie? Whew-eeeeeeee, I've got mine on with subtitles.

It's been too long, but then again I guess it's aged just right too. It's so warm, especially after some gray days. And here I thought if I was going to be doing any Dead I'd be heading to Sept. '72, but this feels right too!

I like the places they take that song that year! Some nice explorations and it's really nice to have Keith putting down a nice piano foundation.

The Good Lovin from 4-14 Copenhagen is one of the best things the band ever did. First, it is the pinnacle of Pig's testifyin' raps--way beyond the usual pony riding into a whole 'nother realm of stream of consciousness. He throws everything he's got into the mix. A huge dose of raw sexuality underscored with a thin line of pathos. But it's Keith who leads here, moving the jam into different places, allowing Ron plenty of new lines to rap over. And then, just as Pig gives that last yell while the band rips away from his rap, bam!--Caution. And then, just as Caution starts to blister under Keith and Jerry's dual engines, bam! again into Who Do You Love, back to Caution, and back to the Good Lovin' reprise. Whew.
This tape first made the rounds in 1973 as a very hissy, sped up soundboard that I used to play over and over. I always thought of it as Pig's grand finale before his death a year later.
And now we have the crispiest of soundboards on the revamped Europe '72.
One of the best, indeed. All the rest of those Good Lovin's seem like rehersals in comparison.
BTW, Dwork does an excellent transcription of Pig's rap in Vol. 1 of the Taper's Compendium.

Be sure to play it while you read it. On many of the G.L's from Europe 72, the thematics are very similar, just as the dollah and a quarter story was worked up in Spring of 1971. But, this time out it's all improvised--oh, sure, there's a four day creep, but where he goes with it--his lament about cheating women and outrunning the law and sampling some cherry pie--well, this was the one.

What is the speculation regarding Rhino's first project? I learned today that it will definitely not be the '73 Winterland box. I'm hoping for an uncirculated Evening With... from '70 with the early acoustic and late sets. I'm certain they don't make enough on these releases to license and include guest (e.g. NRPS) interludes, too bad.
Also, can anybody recommend a good Phil Lesh and Friends set w/ Derek Trucks? Thanks, Dan

I might be alone in this . . .but. . . in going through a lot of 1972 shows I'm really becoming fonder and fonder of "Jack Straw." When both Jerry and Bob are working hard on it vocally, and especially when they do the tempo a bit on the slower side, it's quite a song. Love the "B" section.

Both styles are righteous. The younger version has such sweet harmonies and a great intro; but the later versions have them power chords before the last verse that punctuate the final "JACK STRAW from Wichitaw." Makes you want to jump up. In short, a great Weir--Hunter tune. Too bad they didn't get along. Probably my favorite Bobby tune--other than "Walk in the Sunshine."

David Gans has indicated on a recent blog entry that the Winterland set will not be Rhino's first release. Any wild guesses? Any wishes?
I'd love to see a huge set from Europe 72. Obviously, a lot of it has been released, either in truncated form (the British Box) or shortened from (Hundred Year Hall) or even complete. BUT there are the two Paris concerts, Luxembourg, Copenhagen and others. Since Rhino has so far produced two major boxes--the early stuff on Warner's and the later stuff--it would not be out of the question to see them do something special with the remaining tapes. OR might it be the infamous 8-27 Creamery benefit with the DVD? Or?

Great thread. I've spent some time here catching up.
I was a Dead fan in the 1970s and saw a lot of shows, mostly at Winterland. My last show was the closing of Winterland. I always lamented the fact that none of the records came close to documenting what they delivered in concert (with the partial exception of Live Dead, which captured them in a different period). I had a few tapes of concerts in poor sound.
I have been exploring the vault and Dick's Picks series during the last month. Wow! What a wealth of riches! My Dead juices have started flowing again.
Yesterday, Dick's Picks 14 (from 1973) just totally kicked my ass, especially the last few discs. Jerry caught absolute fire and played a straight hour of music like a man possessed. Thank God this stuff was preserved in such great sound. Thank you, Deadheads and archivists!

Yeah, that's what I meant. I have downloaded these using the iTunes files, which are not any of the three types available on the Dead Store, but those probably sound as good and the FLAC better. Really excellent sound, and reallly excellent shows (all the ones I've bought which are all those through 1977).

News from Rhino spotted in Relix by way of the
Steve Hoffman Forum:"The new issue of Relix features an interview with Rhino execs Greg Goldman and Jimmy Edwards on the future of the Grateful Dead vault. While short on specific plans, they did mention that early '07 would see the see the release of an "historic" 3 disc New Years Eve set from The Grateful Dead's backyard.
They plan on issuing future shows in a timely manner but want to be careful not to tax Deadheads' wallets with too many simultaneous releases.
Goldman said "I think you'll continue to see a series of two-track and vault releases, a steady series coming from the band" as well as videos and box sets, Goldman said, lined with bonus tracks and schwag from the vault.
They have not yet decided to continue with the "Dick's Picks" title...."whatever they may be called- and they may be called Dick's Picks still - they will still be the same type of content...fans shouldn't worry about that drying up on them."
The Grateful Dead's recorded legacy is stored in the label's football field sized archive facility in Burbank in three bays lined with shelves 18 feet high and 50 feet deep. "They're living very nicely down there" said Goldman. "We've even constructed a little chain-link fence on the aisle to make it very clear that this is a special area, and you can't just walk in and browse among the Grateful Dead tapes".
---------
NYE eh? The "from (their own) backyard" bit doesn't really narrow it down. '78 has been released. No NYE show in '73 though some of the boys played with the Allman Brothers. Wonder what it will be? Unless it's '70 or earlier I doubt I'll be interested as the NYE shows that I have I never considered to be among the better ones of the year.

The '72 NYE from Winterland is pretty nice, from what I recall of the radio broadcast tape. I would assert the '81 NYE at the Oakland Aud was one of the best shows in many many years. Really hot playing, gives a strong case that the Dead were as good as ever on the really blazing nights.

Cow Palace was 1976--a decent show at that.
There are 22 possibilities! But there are only so many shows that run into 3 disc space, and that are classic. 1966 unavailable. 1967 no show. 1968, too short. 1969 is decent, 1970 is sloppy.1971--opening with Dancing in the Streets, The Same Thing, the whole show a culmination of that great Fall 1971 vibe--with Keith newly in the band? Classic Other One and NFA--Going Down the Road---NFA sequence? Show only available as an FM source? Or 1972? Classic jamming, though set one is a tad lackluster. 1973-4-5 don't exist. 1976, 77 relatively short and uneventful, 1978 already released.
Must confess I haven't heard 1981
Hmm 1982 with Etta James? After that? The yawns deepen.
Oh--and 1987 is already on video.
Do we get a vote?
