The Scoop: Ithaca Mayor Declares May 8 Grateful Dead Day
Ithaca — In honor of the 30th anniversary of one of the Grateful Dead's most legendary performances that took place on May 8, 1977 at Cornell University's Barton Hall, Ithaca Mayor Carolyn Peterson will declare May 8, Grateful Dead Day in Ithaca.

The headlining event of this anniversary celebration is Dark Star Orchestra's recreation of the Legendary May 8, 1977 Grateful Dead concert.

Tickets for Dark Star Orchestra are on sale now. They are $24.50 in advance or $26.50 at the door. Go online at www.stateofithaca.com, by phone at 273-4497, or in person at The Ticket Center at Clinton House located at 116 North Cayuga St. in downtown Ithaca or at the Theatre on the day of the show to purchase a ticket.

The Mayors Proclamation is as follows:

Proclamation from the Mayor of the City of Ithaca

Whereas, the Grateful Dead have been recognized by many highly credible organizations, individuals and entities including the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as significantly important and integral to the musical and social fabric of our contemporary culture, and

Whereas, on May 8th, 1977 the Grateful Dead performed in Barton Hall on the campus of Cornell University in the city of Ithaca New York, a concert that is widely acknowledged and regarded as a defining and transcendent occasion and example of the art of contemporary musical improvisation, collaboration, musicianship, and performance, and

Whereas, many tens of thousands of individuals who were not in attendance that night in Barton Hall, have become knowledgeable & familiar with the extraordinary nature of the performance on May 8th 1977 through the trading and sharing of recordings of the show, and

Whereas, the cultural identity and perceptions of Ithaca as a community, have been informed and bolstered by the widespread acknowledgement of the magic of May 8th, 1977, and

Whereas, it has been said many times by many people that, “there is nothing like a Grateful Dead concert”,

Now therefore, be it resolved that as Mayor of the City of Ithaca, and in heartfelt recognition of the thirtieth anniversary of the May 8th 1977 concert performance, I declare May 8th 2007 as Grateful Dead Day in the City of Ithaca.

It is amazing that they still refuse to release the 5/8/77 concert commerically. The soundboard is excellent. There is absolutely no reason not to do it. Of course, it shouldn't be called a "Dick's Pick," given the fact that Dick considered the concert too overrated for release (but at the same time proposed that the version of Morning Dew is the greatest of all time).
AmirBagachelles
The upstate NY shows in May of '77 altered the course of many lives. They really were quite a string of over-the-top performances, and Barton Hall rips. Under-rated 1st set, check that out too.

There's a good reason why 5/8/77 has never been released as a DP. It's not in the Vault.

5/8/77 is part of a cache of tapes know as the " Betty Boards". "Betty" is Betty Cantor-Jackson who was a member of the Dead's sound crew. She made some wonderful recordings. Anyway, the story that I heard was that she had a bad coke addiction going on and was fired by the band in the mid 80's. Apparently she was in posession of a number of shows that she had recorded. This was back in day before Dick decided organize the Dead's vast concert tapes to create "The Vault". Anyway, she was evicted from her apartment and she put her stuff/tapes into storage. When she stopped paying for storage her belongings were sold at auction.

Also, IIRC... there are two nasty cuts that need to be patched.

Interesting. I didn't realize that. On the other hand, it would seem a rather easy task to find a good sound source for a legitmate release that patches up what needs to be patched. If Betty had copyright, that would be a different matter.

No other info at this time--although several posters at other sites picked up one of my sarcastic posts and mistook it for real, attributing it to Rhino!:

This is in a forum at Jerome's

"Rhino posted this on their web site this morning:

Grateful Dead: Three From the Vault. This release will be a departure from the previous two releases in that it will feature the artistry of the lateRon McKernan, a.k.a. Pigpen. Pig was for a time the true leader of the Grateful Dead, and we feel a collection of his best work is long overdue. Included in this special boxed set--which will come with a 20 page booklet from Dennis McNally, will be such
tunes as Bobby Bland's "Turn On Your Lovelight," the late James Brown's "It's a Man's, Man's World," Lightnin' Hopkins' "She's Mine" and "Katie May," The Coasters' hit, "Searchin," Jimmy Reed's "Big Boss Man," "Good Lovin,'" and "In the Midnight Hour." There will be a bonus disc entitled "Yentle Pig" which will contain snippets of the Reverend Ron's various marriage ceremonies and hook ups live on stage."

The link doesn't appear to be there now though!

Bob Weir interviewed, and looks like a lot of bits about the Dead upcoming on the CBS Sunday show this morning, probably in about 20 to 30 minutes!

I virtually never look at Rolling Stone anymore. But I saw a copy in the airport with an Bob Weir interview. So I checked it out. I was impressed. He is a very intelligent and level-headed individual.

That's what happens when you DON'T take LSD for 60 years!

BTW: Three From The Vault is coming this month. It is 2-19-71--the show planned and mixed 15 years ago for the same release. Some vintage Pig--a superb Smokestack Lightning with Jerry laying on a little slide near the end--crying the blues!

Check out the new Dead.net--a work in progress.

How are things going, Lon?

Thanks for that headsup Bill. Been thinking of emailing you.

Sort of a setback lately with my wife's counts. Going to Houston again tomorrow for a bone marrow aspiration biopsy and not too happy about it. . . .

Been off the Dead wagon for a while, got wrapped up in a lot of AFRS Jubilee shows and Duke Ellington Treasury Shows, but I got to get back on the Dead trip!

So I go to the Dead Store to pre-order the new Vault release, clicking through the various stages to ka-ching when up flashes the following shipping price to Australia: "UPS Worldwide Expedited - Shipping Cost: $78.20."

Hello?

Does the phrase "Get Fucked" mean anything to you? tongue.gif

Given I had a heap of problems from them on my last order, I can only conclude that the Dead out-sourcing its merchandising is a debacle.

Amazon here I come. dirol.gif
Tony Pusey
Kenny, Skull Fucked perhaps.....
Shipping to Sweden was also more or less the same price as my order!
Wont be going down that road feelin bad again.
vajerzy
Have someone from the States buy an extra one with their order, then have them ship it to you.

The Dead store is only 1 hour from where I live- but they won't allow me to pick it up. I'm going to ask a few more times.
vajerzy
I priced out 2 box sets- to mail both to me is $8.50.....1 is 7.60......I wonder how much to mail the set USPS to Australia? Certainly won't be $78.00!!!

No it won't. But that IS what I was quoted.

After previous hassles with them, I'm well beyond trying to sort out what the price would be. Amazon is easier, cheaper and hassle-free. Which ain't a good look for the band.
Sundog
FYI...

Three From The Vault CDU Pre-order
No mention of the bonus disc???
Tony Pusey
Um, what bonus disc?
Sundog
While skimming this thread, trying to catch up on all things GD, I noticed a mention of a bonus disc of Pigpen rants, raves , and various other stage banter to be included in this release.
jazzbo
There's an additional disc added to Two From the Vault. . . that's the only new material in the box set other than Three from the Vault.
Tony Pusey

Man, did I have fun with that one. I posted it on the archive.org g.d. thread several months ago, and it got picked up and reposted all over the place. "Yentle Pig"?

The "bonus disc" is actually a repeat of the bonus material from the Rhino Anthem reissue in the box set. Kind of a slap in the face rip off.

With so much unreleased material (at least not remastered officially), it's a shame that they are already repackaging what we already have.

But, then, Rhino is a division of Warner Bros.

I've always gotten a kick out of the fact that Jerry's bday is the same as mine. To me it's a cosmic confluence.

I supposed that OrchidDoc has the same bday as PigPen.

By the way, I noticed that the longest cuts on Vault III are the PigPen features.

Yep, longest cuts are Pig's. And he is putting his boot in the band's collective ass. This show is one of his best levitation acts ever.

(Found out not long ago that I share a birthday with Osama bin Laden.)

I was hatched. That is one of the finest Smokestacks there is. Jerry's light sliding--whew.

Just posting this link to make sure that everybody here knows about the newly escaped soundboard tape from 10-22-71.

What do you think, is it time for the Grateful Dead to have their own "Corner" thread?

I confess that about a decade, the whole nineties, went by and I hardly heard the Dead. I was deep into jazz, gave up playing drums in rock and roll bands (I mean how many times can you really pack your station wagon full of equipment with gusto to go out and make gas money playing for drunken frat boys?) and really only Hendrix showed up on my radar from my earlier rock listening world. . . .

But in the last year suddenly (and I solidly place the blame on ORGANISSIMO.ORG!) I'm buying Dick's Picks and the box set and the Garcia box set (TWICE! anyone needing a copy cheap pm me!) and . . . well. . . I'm back to being a Deadhead!

What is it about them? I haven't really put my finger on it, but I think it's part Garcia's eclectic mastery of the guitar, part Billy Kreutzman's wonderful drumming, and part Weir's quirky guitar, voice and songs. . . those are the top three ingredients that keep me going back to the Dead . . . .

So chime in if you're a fan and it's too bad Jeff isn't posting nowadays!

I'm pretty open minded and I have broad tastes in music, but I just DO NOT get the Dead. People seem rabid in their devotion to them: articles praise their improvisation abilities; everytime I've heard them they've sounded like a REALLY bad garage band to me. So, I'd vote 'no'.

At the 224-256 bit rates on Speeding Arrow, I honestly don't hear the difference. So I guess that ignorance (or a deficient ear) is bliss.

Oh...I'm sorry....I thought this was an open forum for discussion. I didn't realize that it was only for syncophants.

bigtiny
jazzbo
Oh feel free to weigh in.

If I recollect within this thread I think you'll see it's been done before. Openly discussed. Not sure your discussion will get much attention but maybe!

I just posted what I did, with smile.gif included because I just felt it amusing the placement on page 100!

But. . . what is there to discuss? You don't appear to want to be "convinced," you've made an effort to "get it" and haven't. So. . . if we get something you don't after quite a bit of time and some effort, and if we try to even articulate it, is there even a chance it will lead to "open discussion" that means anything to all concerned?
Newk
I'm gonna buy either "Closing of Winterland", "Three from the Vault" or the recent "Cow Palace" release. I've never heard any of these but I am familiar with the different periods.

I'm leaning toward the Winterland set. Does it have good sound? Did they mix Donna down? (I hope, I hope)

Just curious about some of your opinions.

Thanks!
jazzbo
Donna dosen't bother me, so I can't remember specifically if they "mixed her down," but the sound is great on that set.

Of the three, Three from the Vault would be the one I'd keep if I could only keep one. But I like Dead earlier better than later.
mr jazz
None of those releases totally showcase the boys at their best but if I had to pick, it would probably be the Winterland closing. SQ is the best of the three, IMO.
Spontooneous
Personally I'd rank the Closing of Winterland set lowest of the three.

Preference here is Three From the Vault. I'm not the biggest Pigpen fan, but this set shows brilliantly why he matters.
jazzbo
Yes, it really DOES show why he mattered!

But then. . . I AM a Blue Ron fan!
