I believe its two track because its getting the From The Vault HDCD remaster treatment. I have a friend who works with their production company who has a promo for it and he says the sound is out of this world.
11-11-73 is one of those mythical shows along the lines 5-8-77 and it features the return of To Lay Me Down in the set list since early 1970.
Fall 73 (mid Oct to early Dec) is my favorite period of Dead to listen to so I am pretty excited about this.

11/10/73 contains one of 3 Playing sandwiches (Playing>Uncle John's>Morning Dew>Uncle John's>Playing.) Always good to have something like that on the public record. For the record Dick's Pick 24 (Cow Palace, 3/23/74) contains the last, so 11/17/73 will be the only one not released.
11/11/73 has one of the more beautiful Dark Stars, with the MInd Left Body Jam into Eyes, and then into China Doll. Just one of those great 2nd sets. Sure they had a lot of them in '73, but it is well worth getting "the treatment." The first set isn't bad either, with a great transition between the China>Rider and a Weather Report Suite. It's an all-time classic show.
Compared to the other nights 11/09 gets overlooked as it's just another excellent night in '73. Maybe they'd better serve the public if they switched out the 9th for the 2nd set from the 14th in San Diego, or include 10/25 Madison instead (it deserves release), but it'd break up the continuity.
I think the packaging is a appealing as it's a 3 night run and that the circulating copies have had some painful cuts on important songs like Eyes and the WRS, so they're doing a service even for the hardcore collectors.
I really hope they turn their attention to Texas '72, as those shows would benefit tremendously from professional cleaning, and the band was so "muscular" for lack of a better term on that run. Or at least "Road Trip" the Hofheinz.

New Road Trips 2-CD Set
In this, the second volume of our new Road Trips series, lovingly compiled and painstakingly mastered (in HDCD), we take a blazing swing through the Southwest - Colorado and down to Louisiana circa October 1977.
Special Offer
Early orders of Road Trips: Volume One, Number Two will get a special limited edition Bonus Disc containing a dazzling plethora of additional tunes from the same tour.

Their free listening party of disc one seems to be overloading their servers (at 2:30 Pacific that is.) If you visit the deadnetstore.com you'll be able to view the tracklisting details (and order of course.)
Disc 1 leads off with "Let It Grow," which is a pretty strange way of doing things, though it sure telegraphs that this is a comp. It ends with the Help>Slip>Frank from Norman, OK. That's a good one!
Disc 2 includes the following:
Playing - Hofheinz
Drums - Hofheinz
Other One -Baton Rouge
Good Lovin' - Baton Rouge
Terrapin - Baton Rouge
Black Peter - Baton Rouge
Around & Around - Baton Rouge
Brokedown Hofheinz
Playin Reprise Hofheinz
So other than an edit after the Drums from Hofheinz, the rest of Baton Rouge will be seamless with "no tricks." Weirdly enough the Hofheinz Brokedown>Playing Reprise was an encore. Gotta love those guys.

It is really cool how they pull it off btw.
Bonus stuff they more freely ID, such as the Scarlet>Fire from Baton Rouge. The 2nd ever "Iko Iko" would be from 10-7 Albuquerque. In case Matthew is lurking there's a "Sunrise" just for you on the bonus disc.

Not sure what I'm going to do. I already own about 40 shows from '77, including Norman & Hofheinz. Though oddly enough I was thinking I should upgrade my Rochester 11/5/77 and get the DP. (It's a sickness, no doubt.) I suppose I should sample my Hofheinz, and the Baton Rouge section would be new to my ears. And I do have a HDCD player...

Not so surprising. He's always been the one most likely to sit out any reunion. (He skipped the whole 1998 tour.)
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong on this: This is the first time we've had Weir and Lesh on the same stage since 2004. That's kinda important.

Rumor has it that Billy is forming a band w/ one of the guys from Phish and the lead guitarist of Max Creek. Apparently they spent a few weeks down in Costa Rica in early January rehearsing.

I think what's going on is the closer you are to Rhino (in CA) the cheaper the shipping. It's UPS? Lon- what was your shipping cost? You're about halfway between CA and Virginia. I'm going to put a few fake addresses to see if the shipping changes depending on where you are.
The current Garcia shop (and former GD shop) is in Crozet, VA about an hours drive for me- and shipping for items is the same as if it was going to CA.

Cool, as media mail can move pretty fast most of the time when it's just up or down I-5. Though the $4.60 is acceptable enough (and I've read on Hoffman west coasters are getting their discs ultra-fast.) That seals it! I may own 2 of the shows, but I'm actually looking forward to the 2nd disc (with improved sound) where they've created a Frankenstein monster set that's better than the reality. And the Dead were all about changing reality.

I'm excited about it! I enjoy the '77 Dead and I don't own any shows other than the Dick's Picks. I haven't downloaded anything- I just entered the realm of DSL since it became available a month ago.
Here's something weird: I entered the Garcia website- they're still advertising 15% off Holiday sale, plus advertising the Pure Jerry Vol 7 (Hampton, VA) but the 15% discount doesn't apply in your checkout and I can't find Vol 7 anywhere on the site to purchase it.

For me, on the evidence of the two releases so far, the Road Trips idea is looking pretty shaky.
Not that I'm a completist or such like - after all, several of the band's greatest albums were compiled the same way.
But I found the first Road Trips just pretty much useless. Although I concede that was my first serious foray into the post-Godchaux lineup. But but but ... a big part of the problem was that some change in the overall sound means I can no longer so easily separate, in my ears/mind, the playing of Garica, Mydland and Weir. There's no particular reason why this should be a problem, I guess. But I'm just so used to hearing the band the same way I listen to a really cooking hard bop outfit: All easily indentifiable parts, but sounding like one sweet-rocking whole.
Road Trips Vol1 No2 is much, much better - there's some really great stuff. But some patchy things, too. Oh well, that's the GD! I guess it's tricky, but tune order is really crucial here.
Don't know about the packaging, either. All very eco/greenie and stuff, but I wonder about its longevity.

shalom. what is shittin'? a friend desired to hear a days between so i found a 93 show online and downloaded it for him. did not listen myself as i am sure it was not something i would have found soulful and swinging, etc. however i also pulled out some old discs to burn for him along with the 93 show. i put on 12/6/73 which was enjoyable. i think i had it on while i cooked sangria and avacado salad. then i put on some winterland '74 seastones into some trippiness. those were good. i listened to a classic '79 show and it did nothing for me no more (cape cod) and also a family dog '69 show which i enjoyed and could see listening to again. i thought i liked '76 but then i put on a june '76 show and it had too much songing and not enough jamming, etc. 12/6/73, that is a heady dank dark star where goodchux thankfully plays some electric piano.

I could've started a thread about this, but I figure pretty much anyone interested lobs in here every now and then, so ...
In my sometimes fevered efforts to replicate the GD experience, I have bought some real turkeys in recent years.
BUT - this one is a cracker.
I stumbled across it at CDBaby and took a punt - and am very glad I did.
It reminds me of the GD only a little bit, but others names that came to mind as I was listening were: Gene Clark, America, Spirit, Steely Dan, Traffic and many more.
It's only marginally truly psychedelic - there's some feedback guitar and sitar stuff. But the playing is actually more jazzy than I expected, something accentuated by flute on several tracks.
The members come from Them, the Buckinghams and Baby Huey, the soul behemouth - quite an interesting lineup.

Truth
Of Them and Other Tales
Truth, the Chicago based late 60's band containing three ex-Them members, is proud to release "Of Them and Other Tales", which is almost 70 minutes of psychedelic drenched previously unreleased originals.tracks
Obviously Van Morrison and Them were 60's rock icons. But what happened to the rest of Them? Jim Armstrong, Ray Elliot and Kenny McDowell regrouped with a top flight Chicago rhythm section and Truth was a mainstay on the midwest underground ballroom/ festival circuit at the end of the sixties. "Of Them and Other Tales" showcases their previously unreleased studio recordings in stunning fidelity.
Truth's adventurous late sixties' sound is a bit hard to categorize, but it's all here:
sitar, flute, exotic studio effects and (most important) great songwriting. The packaging on this cd is equally killer- the lavish, in depth liner notes (including many photos and archival images) tell the Them/Truth story as never before.

i was actually in a small trendy womens clothing boutique with my ex-girlfriend the other day, a japanese place, and the hip japanese dude working the store had on a trippy truckin'. not even a studio version. a flat out either '73 or '74 truckin' which was going into an other one it sounded like as we left but it was rocking trippy for a good fifteen minutes as my ex tried on boots. was surprised to find that in an east village hip boutique.
If you go to
the dead's website, on "the taper's section" a couple of weeks back, they had a PHENOMENAL Truckin' up that had a sick 15 minute jam come out of the end. That made my day when I put that on.
If I have time, I'll track it down and let you know when it was from.

wow what a shitting coincidence. i have been down on dead for a while as i said maybe above (can still put on my favorites, but no first sets and nothing outside of '68-'79) but 7/19/74 has always been a personal favorite and i recently put it on and it is still great. probably the only US blues i will willingly listen to (well also i think there is one from 6/74 out of something good in boston or providence which i would do again). but this show is great. or at least the second set is. don't listen to the first. but i would say this is an underrated set and one of the band's best ever for good improvising. everything is really well extended.

6/74 Boston - Providence makes up Dicks Picks 12. Highly recommended. The Let It Grow-Spanish-Eyes is what makes the 7-19-74 for me. I pretty much live in the 73-74 era.
