Saw Phil and Friends a few nights ago- it was pretty good and he played about 3 hours total. Good musicians with him- especially some guy names Jackie Greene. I admit I got bored a little during parts of it. I think I had more fun people watching- I had on a polo-type shirt, jeans and sneakers and I was overdressed. Long time since I smelled reefer.
Anyway- Phil is doing well and he was smiling through the whole show- good to see!

Jackie Green is local bay area guy, pretty good song writer too. I think my first dead show I went to in the 80's I wore a preppy Izod t-shirt but nobody gave me a hard time, I guess they thought I was just a Bobby fan.
Has anybody else heard the Road Trips # 3 yet. I think its the best one so far.

My live entry to the Dead was from '71 with Skull & Roses. But once I started collecting I grew to prefer almost every year from '69-'78 to '71. Part of it is the way they stretched stuff out by the next year (such as Playin'). I do hold the April Fillmore shows in high regard though, and 8-6-71 is a favorite show, and DP 2 is excellent & underrated. Oh there are other dates too, but given my druthers I'd pick some other year.
Roadtrips 3 brings a new appreciation for what they were doing then. Once again the sound is terrific and I love where Phil is in the mix! And for heaven's sake, if one doesn't have the 8-6-71 "Hard To Handle" you must buy this soon to get the bonus disc. One of thee finest things ever (and I'm not Pigpen's #1 fan either.) So yes, I like this one a lot!
I like what they're doing in this series (at least the past 2), from song choices & editing & soundwise as well. Look forward to the next one!

I agree, after listening to this I have a new appreciation for 71. The energy level and playing by everybody on this new road trips is something. Phil, Billy and Jerry are amazing through out. For those who thought 71 didn't have any jams really needs to hear this.
There is certain something, a "blackness" (not really coming up with the right word) and energy in the way they played Blues and RnB tunes with Pig as opposed to after he left.
As much as I love 77 as it was my gateway to the Dead (hell throw a dart at May 77 if your looking for a good show) I now hear it in a different way, while something was gained something was also lost. Hearing the slow versions of FOTD or St Stephen makes me appreciate the raw energy of 70-71 all the more. You can hear as a band they are just more into it.

wow, I don't know. I was just listening to 11-9 for the first time this weekend and it sounds so sweet. Keith is just a monster on that show. I need to plan a "Staycation" this summer and just immerse myself in the Winterland Box and the 71 Road Trips. Couldn't be happier with both of these so far.

Hmm...I guess it had to be done eventually, but I've never cared much for this material. In fact I gave mine away years ago. Maybe through the magic of editing they can piece together something decent but I'll probably pass.

The setlists were kind of dull and their playing was off. Odd tempos, uncertainty, poor execution...Typical of the band when things didn't click, the difference being that they (mostly) stunk it up amongst the pyramids rather than just another night on tour in America. The Shakedown is decent and I guess the "Ollin Arageed" is something different that some might enjoy.

The band was reportedly way high, the music is tentative and weird for that time. They played one of the best shows of that era about six weeks before, get 7-08-78 if you don't have it. As usual with official product, it really serves the suits best of all. (FTV 3 = major waste, in my snotty opinion.) I guess the DVD could be cool if we can see the whole Sound and Light Theatre scene. The show at Giants Stadium just before Egypt was really good, as were the Winterland shows in October. I am ready for easy downloads from a big catalog, the band should have its own online by-the-track music store by now.

I see that on ebay ppl are already selling the Winterland set for 185 or so. I actually wrote one of these sellers and asked why he was selling the set for so much when you can buy it on dead.net for 99 bucks. The reply was "I'm selling it for 185 because I can." If there is actually anyone out there that is stupid enough to buy it for this much, I hope they can't reproduce.

Sources confirm that the surviving members of the Grateful Dead -- guitarist Bob Weir, bassist Phil Lesh, and drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann -- are planning to tour in April and May of 2009. There's no word yet on the band's configuration -- previous configurations of "The Dead" and The Other Ones have included singer-guitar hero Warren Haynes, guitar ace Jimmy Herring, singer-guitarist Susan Tedeschi, singer Joan Osborne, keyboardists Jeff Chimenti and Rob Baracco, and guitarists Mark Karan and Steve Kimock.

The Winterland Oct-78 stuff is essential, especially if you like the post-74 sound. The two latest download releases, complete shows from Nov-79, are probably pretty good but worth waiting on word-of-mouth. I could not fathom why they included a very weak (but the tour's only) Dew on that Fall-79 tour release, and now with the Egypt stuff, I have to wonder how Rhino is picking music for release. 1979 was OK, but in hindsight was a re-development period for the GD's sound and familiarity with their keyboardist. By the Spring of 1980, the band was really blazing again in my opinion (e.g. 5-10-80 w/ Comes A Time, UJB etc). If any of you is feeling really ambitious, look for free aud downloads of the Spring 1980 shows, and a 4 show mini tour of the Southeast in late Nov-1980 (for sure get 11-29 and 11-30-80...).

My hope would be a Road Trip of those Manhattan Center shows, a Road Trip from late Fall 71, a big assed box set from Europe '72, and a Road Trip of the '72 "Texas Trippn run through your home state. Sure, you can find them all--but not in top quality.
Oh--and a Road Trip Fillmore East Sept 70. And and and and and . . . .
I do like the Road Trips as they avoid redundancy in later shows and make for a good, clean listen.

I don't have an answer to your question about the elder Hart's mental state, but Mickey Hart left voluntarily, after the fact some months.
It's surprisingly easy to find information on the internet. Here's a quote from this page:
http://www.musicianguide.com/biographies/1...ickey-Hart.html"Following the release of the 1969 Grateful Dead albums Live/Dead and AOXOMOXOA, and the 1970 releases Workingman's Dead and American Beauty, Hart resigned from the group. In response to the enormous debt incurred by the band due to the purchase of expensive equipment, bad bookkeeping, and production cost overruns on the band's albums during the 1960s, Hart had convinced the band to hire his father as a business manager charged with returning the group to profitability. The elder Hart, however, eventually embezzled funds from the group in amounts estimated to be between $70,000 and $150,000. Hart stayed with the band for nine months after the revelation but then resigned out of embarrassment. The Grateful Dead provided him with a stipend, however, and Hart received a three-record advance from Warner Bros. He used the proceeds to build a 16-track studio on the ranch that he rented."

He's Gone
Rat in a drain ditch, caught on a limb, you know better but I know him.
Like I told you, what I said, Steal your face right off your head.
Now he's gone, now he's gone, Lord he's gone, he's gone.
Like a steam locomotive, rollin' down the track
He's gone, gone, nothin's gonna bring him back...He's gone.
Nine mile skid on a ten mile ride, hot as a pistol but cool inside.
Cat on a tin roof, dogs in a pile,
Nothin' left to do but smile, smile, smile!!!!
Now he's gone, now he's gone Lord he's gone, he's gone.
Like a steam locomotive, rollin' down the track
He's gone, gone, nothin's gonna bring him back...He's gone.
Goin' where the wind don't blow so strange,
Maybe off on some high cold mountain chain.
Lost one round but the price wasn't anything,
A knife in the back and more of the same.
Same old, rat in a drain ditch, caught on a limb,
You know better but I know him.
Like I told you, what I said,
Steal your face right off your head.
Now he's gone, now he's gone Lord he's gone, he's gone.
