I just got in the mail the latest
Pure Jerry release, 3-18-78 Warner Theater. This is the line up that included Maria "Midnight At The Oasis" Muldaur along with Donna. I think having another voice helps takes the pressure off of Donna. Hey, it worked on "Suspicious Minds" with Elvis and it seems to here too (btw, I don't typically bash her as she added a lot to some of my Dead favorites like "Weather Report Suite.")
The sound quality on this baby is stunning! I do have a HDCD decoder so maybe there really is something to it (of course if you don't have one this will play fine without.) The evening show of this release circulated pretty heavily but it is most definitely a step up.
Over the past year or so about the only Jerry outside of the Dead I was playing was an occasional spin of his '87 string band or some of his encounters with Grisman. I may have to remedy that behavoir, and this is a warm way to start!

Quincy, thanks for the headsup, I missed that this was available and just ordered it. (I have all the others in the series; so far my favorite is the one with Saunders; excellent!)

A wonderful show. All recorded versions have been removed from the internet archives "by request." Maybe this is in the pipeline for a vault or Dick's Picks release?

EXCELLENT observation!!! And news too, though I know some get upset when the free stuff costs money. I hope most will be thrilled at the prospect of improved sound.
I wonder if this means that the Sunshine Daydream DVD is closer to release. My understanding from friends who know Kesey & Babbs family members is that it was difficult to sync the video with audio as techinical difficulties with a generator at the time of the recording caused problems. (Maybe they just read the same interviews we've read too.

) Ken's death slowed down the project for a spell too. They have had an improved working copy which was shown in a few theaters last year (eek, maybe it was 2 years ago.) I've seen a "hush" copy of the DVD which is much cleaner than the one I've seen circulating on the net. About all that was left to do were menus and credits. As they've had the production work done for at least a year, perhaps that means they've been working with lawyers, the Dead and anyone else who needs to be worked with.
I don't want to start rumors or get hopes up with this, but I think it is a good sign as the same thing happened with the Fillmore '69 run that is coming out in November. I think those shows were removed maybe as far back as last Jan. or Feb., so
maybe sometime in 6 to 9 months we'll see a DVD and/or CD set. Again,
maybe, I haven't heard anything otherwise. And sometimes the things I hear from people who know the people involved end up saying things that don't come true. Otherwise you all would have had the movie in your hands 4 years ago or more!
It's high time they do it! Let's hope for the best.

8/27/72 is a multi-track recording. All of the multi-track recordings have been removed from the LMA. Multi-tracks are usually released by outside companies(Arista, Rhino, etc.) and the two tracks are released by GDM.

Ah nuts.
Well, one of these days maybe those with the film will get Sunshine Daydream out to the public for general consumption. Or should I say out to the general public, since many have it some form or another...
I mean everyone should have the pleasure of seeing the naked hippie on the pole overlooking Jerry while he solos right?

You are very right about this release; the sound is excellent and Jerry and John are really having fun, and I like Keith in the JGB, he knows how to sort of just do his thing and loosely compliment everyone. This is one of the very best Jerry Garcia Band releases I have ever heard.

Looking back a page or two to Hunter's latest poignant thoughts, I am reminded of his great role in Deadheads' joy. Let's not forget his talent. When Garcia died, the best reflections upon the Dead and the scene, in my opinion, covered the general high quality of the band's authored and covered songbook. We were singing and dancing along to some dandies! Hunter/Garcia was a top team, and delivered several LPs worth of excellent material over their first decade, plus a few nuggets after 1976. So hats go off to Robert Hunter. who also offered me measured closure on the Dead years, with his Web journal and a fun concert at Town Hall in the late 90s.

Yes, his work with Garcia really is laudable.

Ooops. No spare 80 bucks recently, thus I delayed. 10,000 issued though, I am hopeful. Way back when, Live Dead, Anthem and those searing tapes from '68-74 just pulled me in and kept me enthralled. When I check back in now, various '68 and '69 jams are still the best live rock grooves for my head, and few earthly thrills can ever top Dark Star and The Eleven. Must get that set...

My desperate letter to the GDstore:
Hello,
I am more than sad about hearing the news that this set has sold out.
I tried placing a pre-Order last Friday, but I was unable to get through on the telephone, for some unknown reason.
Is there any chance of getting in on a after-the-fact order? Given the speed at which this sold out, will this be issued again in a non-limited edition? It seems that enough people were clammoring for the release that it would have sold well on the market.
I think that issuing this set on a non-limited basis would be more consistent with the spirit of sharing the music that the Grateful Dead so long championed. I know tapes of this music are around, but only issuing it to a select 10,000 people in superior HDCD fidelity breaks my heart. I am not involved in the trader / taper community; I have been relying on Dick's Picks and related legit releases for all of my live Dead releases. Please don't disappoint by capping this set at 10,000!
In closing, I must say that the first Dead I ever heard was Live/Dead. It changed my life. Really. I was looking forward to the opportunity to hear the whole shows behind what was a seminal point in my music listening life. Please help!
Desperate Deadhead,

I'm massively bummed out. Not only at not getting this essential set, but also by my own procrastination. I was going to wait until October to pull the trigger on this, but it looks like I waited too long. Who'd have figured 10,000 copies would go this fast. Oh well, I guess the upside is I save $80. I'll just look at that as a down payment on the Ray Charles Atlantic box.

Spin is not your run of the mill retailer, they also sell all the Live tour cds which various bands Phish, String Cheese, Allmans et al release as well as all the Rhino handmades Dicks picks etc, really they are worth a mail..What have you got to loose?

I guess it seems crazy to me that when there's this much interest in the Complete Fillmore Recordings, that the Dead folks wouldn't just make more available. It's not like Mosaic where the music is licensed and they can legally only release so many copies. Wishful thinking from a foot dragger, but what's the point of limiting yourself when the market for this is clearly very hot?
Up over and out.
jazzbo
Sep 9 2005, 09:08 AM
Well, I think they are testing the waters. They may even be surprised at how quickly the 10,000 sold. They probably felt that there was a bigger market for the 3 cd version that would supplement but not duplicate the cd of the original lps. . . . I would imagine they didn't feel that a ten cd set would be such a popular item. And this made it safe for them: over time they figured they could easily sell 10,000 and they could make them, distribute them, not have to store them long, etc. Fiscally this was probably a comfortable venture.
My guess is they will rethink their strategy before the next release; it may not be limited edition, or be a time frame or a larger number of limited items.

For those of you hoping for more complete Fillmores to be stamped there is precedent for Grateful Dead "limited" releases to become unlimited. The Terrapin Station live release from years ago was supposed to be limited but it's still for sale today.
I'm curious as to how may eBay sellers bought this up with dreams of making a fortune. I mean I doubt GD told anyone "No, you can't buy 10 copies." Not that I don't believe there are enough fans who would want the music with fancy packaging, just wondering that's all.
Finally, if it really is OOP and a hard to find or expensive eBay purchase, the circulating soundboards really do sound fabulous. You'll still have the "Cryptical/Alligator" cut on either March 1 or 2, but other than that it already sounds pretty terrific.
