I've been listening to the 3 CD set plus the bonus disc that I received from GDstore and it's great! The sound is fabulous and listening closely to the songs gives me a new appreciation of this time period with the Dead. Again the sound is so pristine! thumbs_up.gif thumbs_up.gif

Still lamenting missing out on the 10 disc box set.

Maybe one day I'll find it!!!!!......... rolleyes.gif rolleyes.gif

My Fillmore Box arrived safe and sound yesterday. I'll be busy all day and maybe all week. Hold my calls.

Now that this set is in the mail, I think those who were smart enough to order it when it was first made available should be forced to communicate about it's merits via some sort of PM network. This would relieve the idiots among us who waited too long to pull the trigger from being reminded over and over of our collective stupidity. It's the least you can do.

Up over and out.
orchiddoctor
Having heard these sets over the years--albeit in less than pristine sound quality, and with a few cuts and glitches--I already knew that this was lightning in a jar. But this is now so clean, lean, and mean! I just listened to the DS from 2-28. Still as good as it gets. There are some weaker moments--it's not all A+++++, but it is still a snapshot of that incarnation at its peak. BTW, there's one on Ebay with to days to go that hasn't broken $150 yet.

Then there will be the black market, always the black market--but maybe some b&ps as well. Who knows?

meanwhile, don't pass up on DP 36.

My set is due today too. . . .

If only I could stay home! But alas it's not to be.

Fortunately, I own the place, and my employees are dead heads. It's like christmas carols, only better.

"Dark Star crashes" the psychedellic answer to "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock."

Well I raced home. . . and no set!

It's past the time that UPS usually delivers here. . .but then I don't usually get express stuff from UPS.

I'm hoping it's not lost or stolen!
jazzbo
OH ME OF LITTLE FAITH!

UPS pulled up ten minutes ago and I have it.

Looks like a really cool set. No frills, you don't pay a lot, and you're not paying a lot for fancy packaging. Going to be a great weekend for listening!
Sundog
Got mine. Going to be a total GD weekend with a short break to go freeze my ass off at the Bears game on Sunday!
Tony Pusey
Yeah, I always thought that lineup with J.Alfred Prufock was the best they had. Shame that him and Tom Constantine bailed.....
orchiddoctor
T.C. is the one who put them over the top psychedellicaly--though he didn't take LSD. On the early Dark Stars, Pigpen plays a simple riff over and over--which sometimes adds to the mix, but often detracts from liftoff. His colors and textures were often subtle, but his classical training and penchant for musicians like Steve Reich taught the rest of the band about the art of sound. Just as Godcheaux help the group into a jazz sensibility, T.C. propelled them into an almost medieval world. When you listen to the box set, you'll have a hankering for meade and a slab of meat!

But, ten again, as sitters on the "hot seat" came and went, the music changed and developed. Nothing wrong with that!

Mine's just been shipped.

What's on the bonus disc?
Alexander
I got mine a couple of weeks ago. I opted for the package where you get the Filmore set, the "Dead Ahead" DVD and Dick's Picks 36. All are wonderful, and the bonus discs are great too. For me, the Filmore set is a revelation. "Live Dead," great as it is, only hints at the full range of the band during this incarnation. This set delivers. I wish I had been able to order the full 10-CD set when it was available! Hopefully, some will become available (used) in the future. That way, someone else's loss will be my gain.

The Dick's Picks set is a real treat. It's a four CD set from September of '72. The show itself is four and a half to five hours (the box includes three songs from another '72 show) and they do EVERYTHING. They do "China Cat Sunflower." They do "Dark Star." They do "Cumberland Blues." They do "Truckin'." They do "Bird Song." And "Sugar Magnolia." Pretty much everything a Dead fan could have hoped to hear on a September night in '72! Amazing stuff! Has anyone else picked this up yet?

Haven't you always wanted to know what went on before the Live/Dead version of "Dark Star?" It's great to hear the opening notes of that "D.S." coming out of the mellow ballad that preceeds it. How haunting and fragile that "Mountains of the Moon" is, and that great transistion from hushed acoustic to electric to roaring mad sonic overdrive. Gotta love it.

Damn...mine's been stuck in [Laurel, MD] with the memphis blues again since November 15!

Lon,

I'll tell you one thing, I'd much rather hear you sing "Oh, Donna" than Donna sing anything. I love the jazz sensabilities her old man brought to the Dead's table, but Donna Jean is just baggage. I know you like her, but I just can't get there.

Chalupa, that's a great picture of Garcia. Thanks for posting it.

Up over and out.
orchiddoctor

Donna Jean was kind of the Yoko Ono of the Dead. When she first appeared on stage at the beginning of 1972, I wondered what the hell they were doing. God knows that those banshee wails during the bridge of "Playing in the Band" could clear the house in no time. And that's a shame, since she really does have a nice voice. She just couldn't hear herself; too bad we could. But by the '76-78 tours, she began to fit in a lot better; her duets with Bobby were often sublime. Too bad: '78 is when Keith went to hell.

That's show biz.

Agreed. Listening to the March 1, 1969 show I noticed that very thing.

I agree with OD in his Donna assessment.

She looks great in that photo was what I was really saying! wub.gif

Yeah--she is one pretty lady. And did you know that she sang backup for Elvis in has last years? And the Jerry Garcia Band's drummer Ron Tutt drummed for Elvis? Oh my God--Jerry Berry was Elvis! I knew it!!

Meanwhile, Jazzbo, is that Dark Star still crashing?

Hope so!

Happy Thanksgiving, and thanks for this board.

I didn't know about Donna singing backup for Elvis, but I sure did know about Ron Tutt touring with Elvis. Great drummer.

I'm working my way through the set. "Dark Star" isn't one of my Dead benchmarks. I'm really enjoying the Pigpen on this set. I usually don't go nuts for Pigpen, but when he's really "on" and the boys feel like playing behind him, magic happens. Magic happens on some of these numbers on this set too because they get the tempoes just spot on.

And I always scratch my head whenever they play "Doin' that Rag." Do they ever play that tune as if they really really really knew it?

She sang backup on "From Elvis in Memphis" and "Elvis Back in Memphis" albums both recorded in 1969. I don't think she ever toured w/ him.

Btw, what's up w/ the new format????

She also sang back up on Boz Scaggs peerless Atlantic album, the one with Brother Duane soloing away in the toilet ( dont ask).

Don't you just love it when Professor Pigpen lectures on proper dating etiquette? Or Reverend Pigpen testifies as to the power of a four day creep? Or when he turns into a jockey so he can jump in the saddle and ride? Oh, yeah, real politcally correct. Just as long as you're not playing pocket pool.

May he rest in peace.

Hmmn, Didnt know that Dave, interesting.

Bad, Bad, bad news.....

The Internet Archive has worked with tapers, tape traders, funders, admins, and over 1000 bands to build a great non-commercial music library that is freely accessible. Technically and policy-wise, it has been invigorating as you can probably appreciate. We have made changes in the past and we will make changes again.

Following the policies of the Grateful Dead and the Dead communities we have provided non-commercial access to thousands of great concerts. Based on discussions with many involved, the Internet Archive has been asked to change how the Grateful Dead concert recordings are being distributed on the Archive site for the time being. The full collection will remain safe in the Archive for preservation purposes.

Here is the plan:

Audience recordings are available in streaming format (m3u).

Soundboard recordings are not available.

Additionally, the Grateful Dead recordings will be separated from the Live Music Archive into its own collection. The metadata and reviews for all shows and recordings will remain available.

We appreciate that this change will be a surprise and upset many of you, but please channel reactions in ways that you genuinely think will be productive. If we keep the bigger picture in mind that there are many experiments going on right now, and experiments working well, we can build on the momentum that tape trading started decades ago.

Working together we can keep non-commercial sharing part of our world.

Thank you for helping find balances that work for all involved.

Wow. I shouldn't be suprised that the Dead pulled the plug.

I guess they were stunned by how quickly the Fillmore set sold out, and were reminded about the huge market they could be tapping. It was great while it lasted.
