Full Version: Basie's 100th birthday tomorrow
Basie was born on 8/21 in 1904. Happy Birthday Count! I'll be celebrating tomrrow with all-day Basie in the car, kitchen, living room etc.
Oh, well, happy birthday, of course!
Austrian radio station Ö1 will have part of their "Jazznacht" tomorrow dedicated to Basie - from 01:00 a.m. to 02:00 a.m. (Sunday) they'll broadcast a concert from Paris, March 29, 1960.
From 2:00 to 3:00: Basie & vocalists (Rushing, Turner, Humers, Fitzgerald, Sinatra, Williams, Vaughan, Bennett, Sherman, LH&R)
And from 5:00 to 6:00 "Best of Basie" (strangely, from the Beatles album(s?) and "Battle Royal," - so says the announcement - as if that was "best of Basie"...)
Here in Zurich, on Thursday, Sept. 2, there will be a special cinematic celebration with Basie on screen, between 1941 and 1967:

Many or all of the Septet tracks can be found on a CD recently released by some french PD label, Sagajazz (they have a website, but it only gives track listings, no discographical information).
I'm pretty excited about seing all of these treasures! Billie Holiday!!! That's two of like five tracks surviving with her and Basie.

Happy Birthday to the greatest band and bandleader there ever was (IMHO). I believe wkcr.org may be running a special. I know they've been playing a lot of the Count this week.
The Kid From Red Bank will be honored in his hometown.

Red Bank's Count Basie Theater Back In Swing RED BANK, N.J. -(AP)- Red Bank's Count Basie Theatre will reopen tonight after receiving one (m) million dollars in renovations. The Count Basie Orchestra will perform to mark tomorrow's 100th anniversary of William ``Count'' Basie's 100th birthday. The big band leader was born in Red Bank. The 78-year-old theater's seats were replaced during the renovations. They've been replaced with historic replicas that include a hand-painted dragon motif that was part of the building's original design. The theater first opened as the Carlton Theatre in 1926. The Mosaic Studio LPs have just gone into heavy rotation by way of celebrating this great anniversary. Happy B-day to the one and only Count ! 
I celebrated the Count's b-day tonight by participating in a Tribute to Basie here in KC.
There was a big band led by Bobby Watson and featured artists were Jay McShann, Clark Terry and James Carter. Played many Basie charts- big jam, big fun!
It was good to see Clark- he's movin' a little slow but he is still playing very well and still doing his "schtick"- trading w/himself on two instruments, playing upside-down trumpet, a little mumbles, etc. Yeah, I've seen the routines before but it does my heart good to see Clark continue to get after it. His latest line is when he comes out to the stage (assisted) in elderly slow-motion and sits down on his chair (assisted) he says "You know, the Golden Years SUCK!!"
Got to love Clark. He's one of my favorites.

Great to hear Clark is in good shape. I've lost track of how many LPs he's contributed to hugely over the years. Some unlikely settings too, such as the Grassella Oliphant Atlantic with Big John Patton. Clark is one of those guys who should be around forever.Back to Basie - had a listen today to 'Afrique' with arrangements by Oliver Nelson of material by Albert Ayler among others. I wonder if Teddy Reig sanctioned that one or was it recorded on the quiet. You can almost sence Freddie Green scratching his head in bemusement on some of these tracks.
