Full Version: 'Q' for John Hicks fans
I like what I've heard from him ('...Key of Clark'/ 'Cry me a River'/'Piece for my Peace') so thought I might try to track down the 'Moanin' cd? Looks like this was released in '92 under two different titles 'Blues March' & 'Moanin'. Any opinions? Worth hunting around for? Thanks.
I've not heard this one. . .b u t it sure looks worth seeking out. Blakey-associated material, Victor Lewis on drums (if you're going to do a Bu trib, that's the man to have) and Venus sound. . . ? Looks like it can hardly go wrong.
What's the song title that ends with 'EM' and whose first letters are masked by the OBI strip?

Perhaps it was a two CD set released at different times - one being Moanin' -Portrait of Art Blakey and the other being Blues March - Portrait of Art Blakey.

I don't have a lot of his but what I've heard I like a lot. I think he's from Pittsburg and did a record about that that's supposed to be good, which I'd like to pick up.
I'm a big Hicks fan. Saw him in July with Sonny Fortune and got to talk to him a bit after the show. Real nice guy. Bought a couple of CDs from him and had him autograph them.

Thanks for that. You're right about there being two different titles...both seem to be in the Amazon.jp inventory (TKCV-79007 & TKCV-79008). My Japanese isn't so good but the fact that you see a -1 and -2 on each of the discs is pretty much a dead giveaway re: the two versions of 'No Problem'. Looks like Venus only released one of the titles in the mini-lp format and the gold disc version of that is all that remains in stock....tho Jazzmessenger'll undoubtedly be able to unearth a copy of TKCV-35112 (pictured above) when he hits the bins in Japan.

Well, I was too late on that Cadence sale, but I am pleased to report that the Hicks CD, Moanin' - Portrait of Art Blakey has been reissued by Venus. I picked up a copy from Cadence and it has a 2006 copyright, so its not an old disc they found lying around. Not mini-LP format, but in the usual, outstanding Venus sound. Tunes are

The two Keystone Trio cds on Milestone are excellent. Highly recommended.
Glad it's out again. Funny, after that initial post in '04, I managed to acquire 2 copies of that title and they were both gold discs (TKCV-35032). After years of serious searching, I never laid eyes upon the 'regular' cd issue posted in that pic on page 1 (TKCV-35112). What did they make.....like 20 copies?

I have about 20 John Hicks CDs, and my favorite of all is entitled "Inc.1" It is on DIW, and features Walter Booker on bass and Idris Muhammad on drums.
Dreadful news about his death.......and a terrible shame that we'll never know what magic he had in store for us w/his next Venus release. 
I want to put in a plug here for "Hicks Time," an overlooked solo date on Oliver Lake's Passin' Thru label.

It's verrrrrry nice......just downloaded it from eMusic last week.
Music In The Key Of Clark by John Hicks is a great recent trio recording. It's the music of Sonny Clark. 
Lester Bowie with John Hicks playing "Hello Dolly" is a gem.

Just discovered this recent John Hicks Legacy Band release and checked out a few sound clips. I like Larry Willis alot but there seems to be quite a bit of flute. Is the entire cd full of as much flute as the few short online clips seem to suggest?
