Jim Hall is a bad motherfucker, that's how.
Seriously, Hall's harmonic sense made him a logical choice, I'd think. Moreso than Grant, definitely, and maybe even moreso than Burrell. Hall's voicings and Herbie's are often of a similar mind, I think. And they both worked w/Sonny Rollins, remember.
Now as for how the actual contracting went down (which I think is what you're really asking, right?), I don't know.

It's a bit similar to having Chuck Israels on Herbie's "My Point of View" album. Seemed like a strange choice, to me. But it worked.

Don't know if this really has anything to do with this thread, but Jim Hall is on a Greg Osby Blue Note with Andrew Hill on piano.

Yeah, he also did the duets with Bill Evans in 1962 on Blue Note. I haven't heard Blow Up, but I imagine he was around when Herbie was coming up with the music and he probably was just top of mind as a musician that Herbie wanted to include.

Let's not forget that Jim was tight with Ron Carter, who was tight with Herbie.

The Bill Evans/Jim Hall date 'Undercurrent' was initially recorded for United Artists, not BN, in vinyl days.
It was reissued later as a CD on BN.

Didn't they do some live duo performances in the early 70s? A friend of mine saw Ron play in NYC back then, with a guitarist. I'm not sure, but I think it was Jim.

One of the best versions for St. Thomas (IMHO).
