It looks like cancer got him, dammit.

I guess it's a bit of a stretch to post here, as I don't think he ever hosted a jazz show on BBC and maybe never even guested on one. His thing was originally "alternative music" and then later "world music." I listened to him very regularly on his last stint on Music Planet and then the Kershaw Tapes. Always sad that his personal problems overshadowed his work by the end. I really appreciated his selections, even though he had a strong aversion to Fela Kuti, which I thought was a little odd.

I'm sure I have the Kershaw Tapes taped somewhere, and will have to dig them out. I likely have at least a few of his Music Planet shows archived.

I was not aware that he had a podcast, so I'll see if those are floating around in the aether.

He was the force behind two compilations: Great Moments of Vinyl History and More Great Moments of Vinyl History (perhaps ironically the 2nd compilation was also available on CD!) I'll listen to those as well.

Last year we set up a separate stream for Jazz From Blue Lake that allows those of you who can't stay up until 3 a.m. to hear the program the next day. Last night we celebrated Henry Threadgill's 82nd birthday by playing his recordings in the first 20 minutes of each hour and, man, was that enlightening. "I can't think of anything more mainstream than what I do," he told the crowd in 2014, which was quoted again on Jazz Night In America which we aired on Sunday. I couldn't agree more!

Tonight we're featuring Kahil El'Zabar's Ethnic Heritage Ensemble. They're playing tomorrow in Greenwich Village at NuBlu and then on the 21st at The MET Museum (800 plus, sold out). And tonight's program repeats throughout the day tomorrow. Etc.

In any case, please join us on-line for Jazz From Blue Lake, which airs Monday through Friday from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. and Saturday mornings from 7-10 a.m. All of that programming repeats on the jazz stream.

Ah, to get to the jazz stream. Map. https://www.bluelakeradio.org You'll see the blue bar showing what's streaming live. If you're on a computer there should be a tile on the right of that blue bar that says "All Streams." Click that and then click the Jazz From Blue Lake stream. If you're on a smart phone there will be a star like icon on the right side of that blue bar. Click that and then click the Jazz From Blue Lake stream. If you use the Blue Lake Public Radio mobile app there's a tile that says "All Streams." Click that and then the Jazz From Blue Lake stream.

And for our playlist there's this page: https://www.bluelakeradio.org/show/jazz-from-blue-lake

Since my wife and are bringing Fred Hersch in for a solo piano benefit concert in Chattanooga on April 21st, I interviewed him recently for Timeless Jazz, which is scheduled to air on Sunday, April 19th from 6 to 8 PM ET. It will also stream live at WUTC.org, I have encouraged the station to have a podcast available by the next day on their home page, we'll see if they can do it, as it would be helpful for ticket sales, since they will receive the net revenue from them.

Since the passing of Phil Schapp, there's been a serious lack of jazz facts obsessiveness on the air. However a new show, "Labeled" seems to be in contention to match PS' relentless concern over jazz minutia, but narrows its focus to Jazz Labels.

I don't know how long its been on, but two 30ish sounding guys play some great stuff, meticulously list the tune's title, composer, personnel and date of recording, and then proceed to tear into everything and anything related to the label it was recorded on!

This can include the engineers, the head of the label, the studio it was recorded in, the labels the artist has previously recorded on- basically ANYTHING related to Jazz Labels!

Because there are two announcers (one of them is a writer on strike), there isn't a micro-second of dead air as they fight for domination of the subject matter, with one of them constantly giving in, and telling the other that he's absolutely correct, and he has covered the subject perfectly.

If you're a jazz label fanatic , your ship has come in. The hours are unclear, but they went from about two or three pm to 7:30 last Sunday, and had to be followed by an Eastern Music show, as i f to say another jazz show would upset the balance of the universe!

(Mainly for Pee Wee Russell). Of course you can also get a lot of old detective shows too.

I found the pdf database of Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz artists, which include most recording dates, initial broadcast date and some repeated schedules by quarter only. The database is neither 100% accurate or inclusive of every show, but it is very thorough for the most part. Thanks to McPartland's biographer Paul de Barros for sharing this information with me.

Please note there are no music files within this link, just the schedule by artist.

Among the shows omitted are the special fundraising shows with a single artist that were not compilations or repeats of previously broadcast music.

I was pleased when Lewis Porter asked me for a copy of my 2007 phone interview with Sonny Rollins during the summer, which was done to write a feature in Hot House promoting his 50th anniversary concert at Carnegie Hall. It was published today on his Playback with Lewis Porter Substack page, here is the link:

I asked Lewis if I could edit the interview, as phone interviews inevitably have gaffs that would be edited out of a transcription or radio broadcast, but he believes it is important to share the conversation as it happened, He also shared a link to my original Hot House article.

The interview has never been broadcast or shared on line in any form.

No idea how long this will be available (it aired Sept. 28, 2025), and Mulatu apparently just recommended the tracks (mostly Ethiopian jazz with some classic Miles Davis and Mary Lou Williams mixed in) and doesn't really chat or provide any commentary. Still, it is an interesting 1-hour mix that I enjoyed a lot, leading me to a few albums I wasn't aware of. https://www.nts.live/shows/guests/episodes/mulatu-astatke-28th-september-2025

Apparently Mulatu is wrapping up a farewell tour and had a couple of nights in London. I really hope one of these sets was recorded and will be broadcast later on the BBC, though that seems unlikely.

In 1963 the sixth annual Monterey Jazz Festival included a blues duet between Gerry Mulligan and Peewee Russell, the festival debuts of Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk, a moving performance from Jack Teagarden just four months before his death at the age of 58, and a dedication from the Modern Jazz Quartet to Martin Luther King Jr., weeks after his “I have a dream” speech and days after the deaths of four African-American girls in a Birmingham, Alabama church bombing. Oh, and Dizzy Gillespie launched his “Dizzy For President” campaign as well. Last week’s Night Lights show up for online listening:

I talked to Alan Broadbent today and will edit it to fit into a Timeless Jazz broadcast some time in late August.

If you anywhere close to Chattanooga (Nashville, Huntsville, Knoxville, Atlanta, Birmingham), please make plans to attend his solo piano concert in Chattanooga. It is a fundraiser for WUTC-FM and ticket proceeds benefit the station.

I've got a fair amount of Dick Hyman's discography, so I saluted his 95th birthday with a sampling of his recordings.

It streams live on Sunday, March 6, on WUTC.org at 3 PM ET, though most will find it easier to stream or download at this link:
