  1. I am embarrassed and ashamed that in "going off" I represented the board poorly to a new member, and for that I apologize to everyone, especially Jim for making the board look bad and Carole for making her feel unwelcome.

I am most definitely NOT ashamed for the opinions I expressed. I don't see how a serious "jazz" writer can mention these musicians in any way shape or form. It IS "sad" that the person chosen to write about jazz in New York, the capitol of the jazz world, thinks those two are jazz musicians.

Well put; I don't think you'll find too many of us rushing to defend support for the two mentioned...um...'artists'. :g

I guess it's a positive thing, then, that I honestly have no clue who either of them are.

  2. ... I'm deciding whether to grab/look for the BN trio and quintet (after having read David Rosenthal's Hard Bop) plus the Riker's Island albums ...

    Thanks,

    Jay

These look really nice, and would (will) suit me fine. Thanks for bringing them up.

    Hi Paps,

Shortly after this post a year ago, I found a Japanese King pressing of both the trio and quintet together on 1 LP. It sounds amazing. I'd stopped looking for the Riker's album, and I haven't been buying in a while, but I'll seek that one out again.

  3. Not every style or form that has deep "folk" roots (again a loose term for the sake of argument) has an equivalent musical/emotional richness and/or can successfully bear the weight of expansion/sophistication. In that vein, my introduction a few years ago (via our old friend Clem) to Rembitekka (sp?) was a revelation -- akin to the blues in its ability to generate varied individuality and hair-raisingly intense dramatic impact within seemingly narrow stylistic boundaries.

You know, saying that in Argentina could get you killed. (I'm not kidding.) it's an urban "folk" style (like rembetika!) that came into being before jazz, and it's got a very complex history. Whether you see/hear that or not is another thing entirely.

Yeah. Regardless of what I personally think about this, having lived in AR, that's all I've been thinking reading this thread, haha. It's absolute blasphemy there, far worse than poo-pooing Maradona, but maybe not quite on a level with hating on Borges. I think it's fair to compare Astor Piazzolla to Charlie Parker for the profound effect each had on his respective genre. People just need to be less American-exceptionalist to appreciate that--not meant as a jab.

Stanley Crouch likes a lot of music that I like.

  4. I was at the Wed. 8pm show. I wrote about it in another thread. I think Hutcherson's health must have had something to do with the dissapointment. That's just speculation, but my date was a doctor, and she was convinced he was suffering from emphysema.

Unlike these guys, though, I still thoroughly enjoyed the show. I liked Cables' solo as an introduction, and I liked the duet with Hutcherson after that. I wasn't dying to see Haden anyway. And he played fine too. People need to chill out.

  5. All the other Bobby Hutcherson threads I could find were about his specific albums, not about the man, himself. I saw him last night with Charlie Haden and George Cables. The show was great, although I would have liked if they'd strayed a bit more from the standards.

Anyway, I was really concerned about Hutcherson. He had a lot of trouble breathing, maybe from Emphysema or really bad Asthma. I don't know. He had to leave the stage a couple times, and when time came for an encore, instead of playing, they just came out and bowed again. It definitely seemed like it was due to his health concerns. That was the early show after two previous nights, so maybe it all just took a toll. I can't believe they played another set. He performed really well of course with great energy when he was on stage, but it definitely had me concerned. Maybe this is innappropriate gossip, and I don't mean to cause major alarm, but as a community that loves him, I thought people would care to know. The good news is that George Cables seemed healthy as a horse! They all played beautifully.

  6. Fantasy(or whoever they are now) is happy to lease its master tapes to THE TAPE PROJECT....we are talking

reel to reel at $200 a pop. Rollins: SAX COLLOSUS master tape is on Bainbridge Island, WA as I type.

I say more power to them.

Can you explain more about what this is?

Boy this brings me back full circle, especially since I haven't been posting here much recently. Here's my first topic ever on the forum about it.

They're still doing it is the short answer. It's an even smaller organization now.

  7. Anyone?
I like his writing. His political views are his own affair. I read Ralph Ampersad's (sp?) bio, which was excellent. In it, he describes a scene during the hight of athe black power movement where Ellison was getting an award or something, anyway a public gathering, and a militant came up and really trashed him. Called him an Uncle Tom. Then the guy, according to the story, took off into the night on a Harley or something. Ellison was very upset according to the bio (who wouldn't be) and was about in tears repeating 'I'm not an Uncle Tom'.

I only know his writing and won't defend or detract, but will say he was only a man with human frailties like us all, and also anyone with that good a mind and the soul and imagination to write Invisible Man must've come to his positions after a lot of thought, soul-searching and also in reaction to personal experience---also like us all.

Yeah, Invisible Man is still my favorite book. It's Arnold Rampersad. I read the bio too. It's great. It got me really excited for the upcoming release of the full manuscript of Ellison's second novel that Adam Bradley and John Callahan have been working on.

Is that what they were calling 'Juneteenth'?

Well, sort of. It's the second novel he worked so hard on for the last 40 years of his life. A portion of it was released as Juneteenth, but a MUCH more comprehensive issue of the entire manuscript will be out soon. I really enjoyed the article on it:

  9. I'm not sure how many of us have igoogle homepages, but I have found it very useful. It lets you have your e-mail inbox, various news sources, the weather, etc. all on one page. I was curious if it would be possible to create an igoogle gadget to add to my igoogle homepage that would list the new posts on this forum. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, here is a link.

  10. time to put an * on those Red Sox world series.

Forgetting for a minute what a nightmare putting a retroactive * in the record book would create... I still don't think you can do it because apparently he just tested positive this season only.

You can't do that ...if you could prove evey player on the team was doing roids maybe.

in 07 i don't think Lowell, Ellsbury , pedroia, papelbon , Schill, Beckett, were doing roids.

and even if you do Roids doesn't mean you will win Championships ....A-Rod, Giambi .....

It wasn't roids anyway. I bet it was weed! "Recently I saw a physician for a personal health issue. He gave me a medication, not a steroid, which he thought was OK to give me," link

Now I blame Ahnold for re-opening the debate.

I wonder if Manny got a Medical Marijuana card in his name, citing stress at work?

    Yeah that's what I'm saying.
