  1. I'd be interested in hearing more about this (or seeing the clip). Maybe I should have checked YouTube before I posted. ^_^

I saw some of the footage on television a couple of years ago, I think they showed them playing 'Nica's Dream'.

  2. What can I say... one of my all time favorites. Even though he's often hailed as a pioneer, I think the true reach of his influence is still underrecognized today. You can hear his influence in pretty much any popular music that came after it...

  3. Autechre and other 'IDM' music is cool, but to me not quite the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of electronic artists that play 'groovy dance music for the people'. :D

The stereotypical 'four-to-the-floor' house beat is so ubiquitous over here that I've pretty much grown tired of it over the years, but there's still lots of interesting stuff happening in electronic music.

  4. No "hipster" about it - mine would include some oddball ringers and no KOB!

I think any jazz aficionado's list would include some surprising titles, but given that this appears to be a student mag, there aren't really that many eye-opening titles here, or at least to me. (i'd say the Django and Palmieri titles are actually the most surprising ones). This might be overstating it, but I think I might know more people in my age bracket who own Sun Ra, Ayler or Zorn albums than KOB, so I don't really find this list to be all too surprising.

Didn't mean to imply these are bad records in any way, though.. I own six out of 10 myself.

  5. Some research learned me that this 2LP was never reissued on CD, so I was happy to learn that some collectors had a copy of this 2LP in their collection. Thanks to one of them I got a copy of this 2LP set on CDR. Now I'm able to listed to it.
This album was legitimately reissued on cd by Wounded Bird records last year. :)
  6. I do have a couple of Parker albums, as well as other stuff 'any jazz fan should have', like the Armstrong Hot Fives and Sevens, couple of pre-fifties Ellington albums, Monk's 'Genius of Modern Music' volumes etc. Truth be told, the sound quality does prevent me from playing these too often, although I do enjoy them when they're in my cd player.

I guess the (relatively) poor fidelity does prevent me from really delving into pre fifties jazz in general. I know this will make me sound like a shallow person, but I don't buy records because I'm 'supposed to know' about them or to 'get a well-rounded collection', but simply because I enjoy listening to the stuff I like.

  7. I've heard some KPM and de Wolfe library LPs through friends of mine who collect these albums to sample funk drums and loops, but personally, to me it's way too much trouble to separate the wheat from the chaff. Some of the stuff is quite nice, and lots of it... well, not really.

  8. Personally, I think this lp is somewhat hit-and-miss, but the good stuff is very nice. I like that track 'Dr. Honoris Causa' that's also available on the 'Cannonball Plays Zawinul' compilation cd (with George Duke on keys, though...), if you really need it in a remastered cd format. Of course a cd reissue of the entire album would be welcome.

  9. I don't know if this is really considered a standard, but I really can't stomach 'Sunny'. No matter who plays it, I just think it's a corny tune. Maybe because it was a huge European hit for 70s disco group Boney M and I'm mostly familiar with that version.. just can't help but dislike that tune.

  10. Another one I really dig a lot is the Jazz Messengers cd on Columbia, the one that has Blakey, Silver, Mobley playing 'Nica's Dream' and tons of other good tunes. This record is 20+ years older than I am, but to me it sounds a lot fresher than a lot of stuff released this year.
