  1. Thanks! I couldn't unpack it with WinRar, but it does work with the latest Winzip version.

Very cool footage, the tune indeed is 'I remember Britt'. The only Lee Morgan footage I've ever seen before is with the Jazz Messengers. Is Jymie Merritt playing an electric upright here?

There's actually more good stuff in the main directory of this page: http://homepage.mac.com/bobbelden/

Various Blakey and Miles videos, Dexter Gordon, some guitar stuff... :)

  3. The ZFT had also promised to have 'Trance-Fusion' on sale during the gigs initially, but that announcement also mysteriously disappeared from the Z site, a few days before the tour started. Anyway, take all their promises with a huge amount of salt until you actually have the product in your own hands. The Roxy footage they showed was great btw, Montana and a nice extended version of Dupree's Paradise.

  4. Someone in the know over at the Zappa.com message board mentions that new tour dates will be added shortly, including Denver.

like i said.... the northwest is out of luck for now, DC is happening at the Warner. Denver, Kansas City, Minneapolis, Cleveland, Buffalo, Montreal, Providence, Wallingford, CT, Atlantic City are the rest. I may be missing one.

Might want to keep an eye on the official tour schedule.

  5. Is that the one with Mingus being evicted from his apartment? That's a pretty depressing film, very interesting though. I think you can actually watch it on Youtube if you search for "Mingus", it's split into 5 or 6 parts.

  6. Another thing, the Shaft soundtrack lp credits Willie Hall for the famous drum intro on the title track (and everything else on the LP). However, Pretty Purdie did record his own version of the theme for an lp. Is this just sloppy research by the author, or...

  7. I don't think you should go in expecting something that recreates an authentic Frank Zappa concert, that's just impossible without the man himself present. However, as a performance of his music, it sounded great.

In Amsterdam, Steve Vai and Terry Bozzio sat in on a couple of tunes, but the core band consists of mostly unknown players and they played very well. I like how they focused on some of Zappa's more challenging instrumental stuff instead of doing "Bobby Brown" or "Disco Boy".

  8. I saw the Zappa Plays Zappa show in Amsterdam, and I was mightily impressed. Three hours of live Zappa music performed pretty accurately, and Napoleon Murphy Brock's vocals sound like it's still 1974. It might be somewhat expensive, but I thought the show was great.
