I reached out to Werner and he confirmed that a CD is forthcoming next month, and there will be additional releases in the future.

Wish I'd had that info ten minutes ago! Oh well...

Good that you mention Jimmy Hastings - his work on this album is a real ear-opener. I recall seeing him play in a much more mainstream style with Humphrey Lyttelton and that was mainly on clarinet but here he is largely featured on saxes and flute on these sessions and in a much more contemporary style. The style sort of reminds me of a British Frank Foster, if you can picture that. His playing here is a real highlight, along with that of the fine trombonist Chris Pyne (ubiquitous on BBC Radio jazz of this vintage).

Yes, as you say, he also crops up on those Caravan albums.

My wife's brother is married to Jimmy Hastings' daughter (and he played percussion with Caravan at one point) and I was able to share your kind words with her yesterday, Bob, and she is going to pass them onto him.

  3. I am looking for the following volumes of the Duke Ellington Masters of Jazz series in excellent condition or better:

    Volume 3. 1927-1928. Complete Edition (MJCD 25)

    Volume 4 - 1928 - Complete Edition (MJCD 30)

    Volume 5 - 1928 - Complete Edition (MJCD 52)

    Volume 6 - 1929 - Complete Edition (MJCD 69)

    Volume 7 - 1929 - Complete Edition (MJCD 88)

    Volume 9 - 1929-1930 - Complete Edition (MJCD 123)

    Volume 11 - 1930 - Complete Edition (MJCD 173)

    Volume 12 - 1930 - 1931 - Complete Edition (MJCD 174)

I can get most of them individually, but the shipping costs are fairly prohibitive if I'm buying them one by one so am happy to discuss pricing. I am based in London but have an address in Northern Ireland (so in the European single market) or a proxy shipping address in the US.

    Thanks

He did not say anything about a release outside of Japan. But during the last few years I've already asked him several times about the prospect of ENJA reissues for the European  and/or US market. Or at least to re-import some to Germany. But reimport doesn't make sense financially. And at least in Germany there's seemingly not so much interest in these re-editions. So in short: no. - For my part I shall do order it in Japan. He has the CD already but only one copy. He never cared that much about an archive of his own productions. This sometimes leads to challenging situations. Some weeks ago he mentioned that he was asked by Blue Note about a vinyl reissue of an ENJA title on Blue Note Records. But it seems that the master tapes are gone.

That’s really helpful, thanks. Will order from Japan in that case.

Anyway, it seems his son is just selling off inventory and not repressing. Over half the catalog is unavailable on Amazon and Dusty, so I suggest grabbing anything you desire.

Where is he selling the inventory? Google doesn't seem to help and the discogs link tries to send me somewhere dangerous.

    Thanks

So if I'm reading this right the only way to get the complete Symphony Hall concert is in the big set where it is 3 LPs.  The single CD and single LP being sold separately are an edited version.

I think you are right - sorry, I didn't read it thoroughly. Strangely, it doesn't look as if the big set comes with a digital download of the complete concert.

Yeah, and what Rooster is linking to is Rough Trade stores in the UK...wonder if Dusty Groove will provide an American counterpart?

    yes, they will.

No, that is the US Rough Trade store. The last time I checked the UK RSD list, this was only listed on cd.
