I’ve got Hutcherson’s The Kicker and McLean’s It’s Time. Pre ordered Hutcherson’s Oblique.
Great sound, nice packaging. But still: way overpriced.
-
Yeah I was a bit surprised as all of these guys are among my absolute favorites. But it really sounds more like a jamsession than a real album. It’s not bad at all, but did not meet up to my expectations. The session with Sonny Fortune is better in my opinion.
-
Pure Pleasure does not do cd’s so I would note count on it.
-
Yeah their shipping rates are very reasonable. But according to the guy working at Gotta Groove this will be only avaible trough their website. Well, we will see
-
That’s great news! Also issued as Baystate New Tolliver isn’t it? Yeah 40 bucks is overpriced of course but second hand alternatives will not be a lot cheaper and Pure Pleasure really does a good job remastering records. Never liked the 90’s Bellaphons from Germany. This one will be on my list.
Oh Tollivers ‘In the Trenches’ is also on DG again up for release.... for the 4th time....
-
Lacy, CT... those are some pretty big discographies with lots of rare stuff!
-
30 dollars for shipping, how unfortunate. I'll pass.
-
Yup got that message also. So that means: also not trough Dusty Groove or Amazon?
-
Good idea! Some of their releases are avaible here but I’ve got a feeling the Al Fatihah release will be in small amounts, perhaps limited. Will email them.
-
Anyone an idea if this will be avaible in Europe or do I need to order from the label or any US store?

how about this one? 16 euros including shipping is not unreasonable for a SteepleChase is it?

It’s on Dusty Groove!

What does that mean, Dan? Are they some sort of apparition or specter?!?!

Pim - Do you have Ibrahim's Ode to Duke Ellington? If not, you should seek it out immediately! It's one of his best, IMO.
Yeah I’ve got that one. It’s a great record indeed
-
Nah, me neither. Official stuff only. Next to Mal, I’ve got all Coltrane’s leader sessions and most of his stuff as a sideman. But I do not own the countless live bootlegs from the ‘60’s.
I also have most of Abdullah Ibrahim’s records. All the Enja stuff, the African recordings and most of his latest work. Still need the Black Lion early stuff and some ‘70’s sessions on other labels.

Finishing my almost complete Mal Waldron discography I wondered: any boardmembers here who have collected a complete discography by an artist? Or anyone who has that as a goal?
Anyone yet completed Duke Ellington’s?

Amigos,
I just stumbled across this Mal Waldron write-up from The Nation, published in 2017. I haven't even read it yet -- just a quick scan -- so I make no promises regarding its quality. Looks promising though.

Thanks for sharing that! Looks interesting

I'll play too! ...
My five favorite MW records (at this moment):
- Black Glory (Enja)
- One Upmanship (Enja)
- What It Is (Enja)
- Songs of Love & Regret (Free Lance) - with Marion Brown
- One More Time (Sketch) - with Jean-Jacques Avenel & Steve Lacy
Lots of overlap on our lists! You guys have good taste!
Yeah great choices!
-
Yeah you could definitely hear it’s the same Mal. But it’s still pretty different than his layer playing.

have been a big fan of Nicolas Simion, ever since I saw him in one out of five surprise bands in a "wildcard" concert 25 years ago... he really is underrated... one stupid question, asking as a Barney Wilen collector: are those two Waldron/Wilen albums identical or are there really two albums?
They are actually the same. What’s so confusing is that some of the titles are different. Plus my Timeless reissue of the movie themes states 1990 as recording date and my Japanese version of the French Movie Story says 1989. It confused me that much that I’ve bought both....

Mal had a mental breakdown that year. It had something to do with drugs, according to himself. He was unable to play and had to relearn his skills by listening to old records by himself. After that year his playing style really changed and grew to the style he’s most known for: the dark lyricism, the repetitive and percussive play that really became his trademark.
That’s the period I am most interested in. Don’t get me wrong, some of the pre 1963 dates are really, really good (The Quest, Impressions) but in my own opinion the later Mal is more interesting.

If I might ask, where/how did you find a copy of Reminiscent Suite?? I've been trying to find a copy for eons, and I've never seen one go for anything less than ~$80, iirc. -- and more often than not, more than $100.
If there was ONE Mal date I'd like to have on CD, it'd be that one!! -- Mal & Terumasa!!
Well that’s what I have paid for it.... I thinks it was about 90 dollars including shipment. I usually never spend those kind of amounts on cds or vinyl but this was one I had to have. I don’t think it’s obtainable for less... and with Mal I have paid those kind of prices more than once as most of his music is quite hard to get.
Oh yeah a great SHM or UHQCD reissue would be much appreciated!

Good Choices indeed .... I would go with (at least today) :
Mal Waldron Plays The Blues
Free At Last
Number Nineteen
Waldron/Lacy Dreher Paris 1981
One More Time
I could definitely survive with those!
-
Yeah I’ve got the version on Eastwind with the white cover. Not the best version I guess so I’ll probably replace it with a Japanese one in the future.
5 albums, boy that is difficult, 10 would be easier haha! I’ll take this I guess1. Reminiscent Suite
2. Black Glory
3. One Upmanship
4. Number Nineteen
5. At The Bimhuis 1982 with Steve Lacy
@HutchfanThe Tutu’s are all great but my favorites are
- Mal, Verve, Black & Blue
- From Dark Into the Light
Both steaming live sessions with the great but underrated Nicolas Simion. Jim Pepper (who’s on most of the other Tutu’s) is great but Simion has my preference.
And thanks for the kind words. Bit busy nowadays but hope I could start soon with that blog! Will post the link here of course.
BTW: I see I have forgot to include Spanish Bitch on the pictures. That one is framed on my wall -

Probably due to my weary eyes, but missingt :
"Breaking New Ground" (Baystate)
Lacy/Waldron "Live At Dreher Paris 1981" (hatOLOGY)
Yup they are both there, on the first picture

So I used jazzdisco and Discogs as sources to complete my Waldron collection. I am pretty sure I own everything after 1963. Any Waldron experts around here who could double check? Perhaps I am missing something.
As a leader on cd:
As a leader on vinyl
As co-leader:
As a sideman:
Thanks for bothering and before you ask: yes I also own all his records as a leader before 1963. But not all his appereances as a sideman.

Funny to see how different peoples experiences could be. I never really liked that session and in my opinion it suffers from exactly that what here is spoken about.
I do love Summit Conference but that session is really led by Workman as HutchFan noted.
