Scientist Sees Space Elevator in 15 Years 51 minutes ago Add Science - AP to My Yahoo! By CARL HARTMAN, Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON - President Bush (news - web sites) wants to return to the moon and put a man on Mars. But scientist Bradley C. Edwards has an idea that's really out of this world: an elevator that climbs 62,000 miles into space. AP Photo Slideshow: Scientist Envisions Construction of Space Elevator Scientists Envision 62,000 Mile Elevator (AP Video) Edwards thinks an initial version could be operating in 15 years, a year earlier than Bush's 2020 timetable for a return to the moon. He pegs the cost at $10 billion, a pittance compared with other space endeavors. "It's not new physics — nothing new has to be discovered, nothing new has to be invented from scratch," he says. "If there are delays in budget or delays in whatever, it could stretch, but 15 years is a realistic estimate for when we could have one up." Edwards is not just some guy with an idea. He's head of the space elevator project at the Institute for Scientific Research in Fairmont, W.Va. NASA (news - web sites) already has given it more than $500,000 to study the idea, and Congress has earmarked $2.5 million more. "A lot of people at NASA are excited about the idea," said Robert Casanova, director of the NASA Institute of Advanced Concepts in Atlanta. Edwards believes a space elevator offers a cheaper, safer form of space travel that eventually could be used to carry explorers to the planets. Edwards' elevator would climb on a cable made of nanotubes — tiny bundles of carbon atoms many times stronger than steel. The cable would be about three feet wide and thinner than a piece of paper, but capable of supporting a payload up to 13 tons. The cable would be attached to a platform on the equator, off the Pacific coast of South America where winds are calm, weather is good and commercial airplane flights are few. The platform would be mobile so the cable could be moved to get out of the path of orbiting satellites. David Brin, a science-fiction writer who formerly taught physics at San Diego State University, believes the concept is solid but doubts such an elevator could be operating by 2019. "I have no doubt that our great-grandchildren will routinely use space elevators," he said. "But it will take another generation to gather the technologies needed." Edwards' institute is holding a third annual conference on space elevators in Washington starting Monday. A keynote speaker at the three-day meeting will be John Mankins, NASA's manager of human and robotics technology. Organizers say it will discuss technical challenges and solutions and the economic feasibility of the elevator proposal. The space elevator is not a new idea. A Russian scientist, Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, envisioned it a century ago. And Arthur C. Clarke's novel "The Foundations of Paradise," published in 1979, talks of a space elevator 24,000 miles high, and permanent colonies on the moon, Mercury and Mars. The difference now, Edwards said, is "we have a material that we can use to actually build it." He envisions launching sections of cable into space on rockets. A "climber" — his version of an elevator car — would then be attached to the cable and used to add more lengths of cable until eventually it stretches down to the Earth. A counterweight would be attached to the end in space. Edwards likens the design to "spinning a ball on a string around your head." The string is the cable and the ball on the end is a counterweight. The Earth's rotation would keep the cable taut. The elevator would be powered by photo cells that convert light into electricity. A laser attached to the platform could be aimed at the elevator to deliver the light, Edwards said. Edwards said he probably needs about two more years of development on the carbon nanotubes to obtain the strength needed. After that, he believes work on the project can begin. "The major obstacle is probably just politics or funding and those two are the same thing," he said. "The technical, I don't think that's really an issue anymore." http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=...tor_3&printer=1

He's always seemed too cocky to me..... Farrell's manhood cut. By staff writers 23jun04 SEXY actor Colin Farrell's manhood is reportedly so big it was considered too shocking for moviegoers. The Irishman's nude scenes were cut from his new movie A Home At The End Of The World because director Michael Mayer considered them too "distracting". According to British tabloid The Sun Farrell's appendage caused "a stir" at test screenings. "The women were over-excited and the men looked really uncomfortable," the newspaper reported. "It was such a sight it made it difficult to concentrate on the plot, so the decision was made to get rid of it,” the source said. The movie, which also stars Robin Wright Penn and Sissy Spacek, follows the story of a love triangle between two men and a woman over a period of twenty years in the US. Feisty Colin, however, is reported to be fuming his private parts will not be granted adequate screen time and has demanded the scenes be included when the film comes out on DVD. http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/common/st...5E10431,00.html

Universal Frankenstein films on DVD

Think it's been added back in during the last decade or so. Might have made it's first appearance on the old laser disc--I have it and I'll check. Man, remember the awful jump-cut/splice on the old prints where they just snipped the line out? Well???? -
Played a little Dodgeball, anyone play bombardment? The Dodgeball we played was in a circle... bombardment was teams on each side of the gym, you couldn't cross the center line, and I think there were other lines you were not supposed to cross either (Hey, we are going back to the 70's here!) If someone caught the ball you threw, you had to go to the sidelines and wait for someone to catch a ball, then you were back in....(Is at all like dodgeball?) Anyway, bombardment was one of the very few games I was any good at...went from a public school that was 50% black, to one closer to my Grandmother...a lily white public school...why do I mention this? Well, switching schools in the 3rd grade I found out that I was used to playing with the brothers (And sisters) and that they threw harder! I adapted to that fact. I learned to throw pretty hard as well. So, first day of Gym class, I make LOTS of new friends! I threw the ball like I always did...knocked a girl down, her glasses fell off, made her cry. So, just threw to the boys...knocked a boy down, made him cry. Gym coach is mad at me, everyone was mad at me, so I cried....ah sweet memories! what was I supposed to do? Not throw hard? Well, I learned to throw a little softer, people stopped clinging to the back wall. I recall catching 2 balls at once even! Of course, some bastard had to throw one when I still had them in my arms!

I figure that they wanted to try it out where no one would notice it... Old people. Hey, Lawrence Welk reruns are running again on PBS guys, isn't that great?

Don't forget the labels on the cds! I just found a cheap 2 cd opera used, and the label and I guess the plastic coating on top is sluffing off!

I have seen cases of 'bronzing' on the part of manufactured CDs. I have a few cds from the ASV label that were like that almost from the day I bought them! They still play fine...at least the last time I checked...and who really knows how long these cds will last? BASF used to claim that VHS tapes could be recorded on 600+ times, but I found video lines crop up on some tapes after a few dozen times....many of my Beta tapes from the 80's are almost useless(Been taping some onto DVD's)

Oh yes, there is love for it! That band just plain rocked! Someone else from the same era that is taken for granted IMO is Benny Carter! How about a set of his late 20's thru Europe in the 30's??? Lets face it a fair number here don't dig into the early days of jazz, unless it is a mosaic.... -
Solo act: Navratilova, 47, wins at Wimbledon

Actually, all I was thinking of was that she is OLD and because of that fact, an underdog....Even when I could claim to be young, always liked it when an older athlete could beat back time, and a younger opponent... -

Solo act: Navratilova, 47, wins at Wimbledon
BERIGAN posted a topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
After warm welcome, Navratilova takes charge ESPN.com news services WIMBLEDON, England -- Just like old times. Nine-time champion Martina Navratilova returned to Wimbledon for her first singles match in 10 years Monday -- and looked as if she's never been away. Serving and volleying in classic grass-court style, the 47-year-old Navratilova crushed Colombia's Catalina Castano 6-0, 6-1 in 46 minutes in a rain-interrupted early match on the opening day of the 118th edition of the Grand Slam tournament. It was a big turnaround from Navratilova's singles appearance last month at the French Open, where she lost in straight sets in the first round to Gisela Dulko. "It's great to be out there, great to have that opportunity," Navratilova said. "When people say, 'Why are you doing it?' I guess the answer is, because I still can, bottom line." Turning to critics who thought she couldn't be competitive again, she said, "You guys didn't believe me. Now do you believe me?" Navratilova also had pointed words for those who questioned whether she deserves to be granted wild cards at the expense of younger players. "Are they still saying it?" she said. "I don't think so." There have been three disruptions in opening-day play because of showers. The forecast calls for intermittent rain until midweek. Granted a wild card entry last week, Navratilova was back in her element on her favorite grass surface at the club where she made her debut 31 years ago. Winner of six straight titles from 1982-87, she hadn't played singles at Wimbledon since losing in the 1994 final to Conchita Martinez. After receiving a warm ovation from the crowd on Court 2, known as the "graveyard of champions," Navratilova took charge immediately. She played a style rarely seen in tennis these days: She served and volleyed from the first point, she chipped and charged on the returns, she hit for angles rather than power. Castano, ranked No. 102 and playing only her second match at the All England Club, looked tight facing a Wimbledon legend and put up little resistance until late in the match. "It's almost like playing my mom," said Castano, whose mother is 50. Navratilova was up 5-0 after just 16 minutes when the match was stopped by rain. Further rain was forecast for later in the day as well as during much of the first week. After a 40-minute break, Navratilova picked up where she left off, breaking for the first set and racing to a 5-0 lead in the second. Castano finally picked up her game, breaking for 5-1 and forcing a break point in the next game. It took Navratilova five match points before she finally closed out the contest. "It's nice when the biggest applause is when my opponent wins one game," she said. "I just let up a little bit. It's nice to be pushed a little bit at the end. You can only play as well as your opponent." Navratilova flashed a big smile and lifted her racket in the air as she sat on her chair, then stood up and applauded the crowd. She held up a clenched fist as she left the court. Former two-time champion Venus Williams started her bid for a third Wimbledon title with an emphatic 6-3, 6-0 victory over Marie-Gayanay Mikaelian of Switzerland. Williams used her heavy serve to dominate her 20-year-old opponent, ranked 106th. She had to save break points before wrapping up the first set on serve but whizzed through the second set in only 22 minutes to secure victory in drizzling rain on Court 1. Venus' sister, two-time defending champion Serena, begins Tuesday against China's Zheng Jie. It's been a year since Serena won a Grand Slam title. She could become only the third woman in the past 35 years to win three consecutive Wimbledon championships. Venus won the women's title in 2000 and 2001 but has been runner-up to her sister Serena in each of the last two finals. Information from The Associated Press and Reuters was used in this report. -
Yep, unless your name is Duke, the record companies just don't think it helps sales much to promote the 100th....Bix was last year, wasn't he? Hell, I wish Classics would just start putting out Jimmy Dorsey discs...

what the fuck does this have to do with Christianity, anyway? -
Unfortunately my FYE store was all out. They didn't have any flyers advertising the price either. If anyone has a copy of the flyer and can scan it and post it here that would be highly appreciated. Don't know if Best Buy would take a printout of the flyer but it is worth a try...... Have you tried calling other FYE's as well?(If you don't have any, if you buy all 3 you save what, $75?) I have been to a few in the past couple of days, and both of them had a fair number.....Also, I saw at the second FYE flyers talking about rebates on MANY sets, $15 to $20 off of Alias, Family Guy, Futurama, the Box set of Scarface (With the Paul Muni version) and many more! I don't think I saw a date for those, so don't know if the 19th is it for them....some stores are better run than others of course...

Chaney ain't whistling Dixie! It is for real, and I was surprised to see the FYE still had some in stock! $45 bucks for 3 is sweeeet! They also have a few $1.88 cds that are 1.66 if you buy 3...at least that was a week ago, just got a few cds for $1.00 and a few for .50!!!

DVD sale at B&N buy 2, get 3rd free
BERIGAN replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
From what I have been told by the staff at B&N, is they are really two separate companies(even though you can use the discount card online, it usually is for only 5% off) better prices online than in the stores as well. I was REALLY hoping it was online as well! They may not do this again, someone told be that Universal was not happy with this, and wasn't shipping anything to them(I would have thought they got most of their inventory from Baker & Tayor, or Ingram) they just didn't know if that would be the case for the rest of the month, or longer! -
I didn't show this photo of hers before?

So...how much moola would one have made betting lets say a grand on Detroit winning in 5 games??? I love underdogs, way to go Pistons!!!!
