  1. Thinking scenarios here, if the mass market stuff (read: pandering crap) is free and people (even a minority) is willing to pay for "art", then the musician who wishes to "sell out" starts producing...wait...
  2. Ah, but if you want to listen to someone else sing and beat a log... I suppose it's just my old-man-ness here, but kids these days do seem to think the default price for many things should be zero.
  3. Nobody knows for sure how the music business will work in 5 or 10 years. But underlying all the confusion is a stark fact: the market price of recorded music is falling.
  4. I brewed back in the seventies. Then it became legal and I quit. Well, it became legal and popular and I started travelling perpetually and I I went vegetarian and quit brewing. But it was great fun. Back then, no brew shops, no malt extract, hops were mostly grow your own or order from Austria. A big chemistry experiment in every carboy.
  5. Three people with birthdays January 31; a total of one forum post for the whole group. I'm not sure why I notice or care. Just a strange phenomenon to me: show up, sign up, then lurk or disappear.
  6. I think he played at one of the Yoshi's locations not long ago. Or it was scheduled. He's definitely infiltrated some formerly jazz-centric venues.
  7. Some fine advice already offered, but I would have to add: think about what you want. Audio is really changing, and you should ensure you're getting something that will serve your desires (we aren't really talking "needs" here, right? -smiley here- ) Sources: CD? Mass storage (from download, burn or "local creation"/recording)? LP (who know how long the fad will last) Streaming? Amplification: Phono input needed? Or "line" only? Digital only? Analog and digital sources? Output: Speakers? Headphones? Depending on those "desires", you might avoid entire components you don't need. An amplifier, a phono input, component CD player, A/D converter...
  8. Almost seven "G"-less years, but I spotted his entourage at my downtown Seattle hotel this weekend (Friday night). I found out that he's playing Jazz Alley (..where I saw our own Jim Alfredson not long ago).
  9. This is "ethically incorrect" to say, I suppose, based on legitimacy concerns, but all that Boris Rose material would be great to see/hear.
  10. Judging by the skateboarders I've known, it isn't an entirely clean sport. On the other hand, I don't think marijuana is considered a performance enhancer... Okay, curling. Is curling clean?
  11. But if everyone is "juiced" is it back to a competition between "athletes" and their equipment, or is it doctors competing through their "tools"? On the other hand, might it all adavcne medical science, which would be a good thing?
  12. Perhaps it's the "blindness" that comes with proximity, but I do still have lots of respect for Greg (whom I raced against and lost to weekend after weekend). At the time, little was known of the challenges of his youth. To my mind he carries just about the perfect amount of arrogance to be a champion.
  13. Happy BIrthday! (Hey, is there an echo in here?)
  14. (Shut up, BeBop. Stifle youself, as Archie Bunker would have said.)
  15. Kicking off the KCSM (San Mateo, CA/Bay Area) broadcast day: 6:00 AM organissimo never can say goodbye dedicated
  16. Wait, did I miss the party? All the best, 7/4!
  17. Just a aside, it would have been difficult for Mosaic to be negligent in choosing a time to ship. I was not far away from their location during and after Sandy. There simply wasn't access to shipping facilities. So perhaps your set was shipped and damaged while in the care of the carrier.
  18. Happy Birthday, Africa Brass!
  19. The other day, I was working in Toronto and walked by Massey Hall. I've been to the Vanguard and the Lighthouse and the Appolo. Keystone and Carnegie Hall. But somehow, Massey Hall struck me. Then again, my name is BeBop.
  20. The mythical all night cutting session with Pres, Hawk and Ben. Or Dex and Wardell at Jack's Basket or some other West Coast club.
  21. Just in case anyone is as dumb as I, at the Big-O website, the CD isn't listed under "CDs". Look for the Pre-Order item in its own section.
  22. Be happy, it's your birthday!
  23. Can't recall the last time I encountered Clint Hopson hereabouts (Organissimo), but, hey, Happy Birthday wherever you are.
  24. Lance Armstrong may admit he used banned drugs: NY Times Yes, the world's biggest media wh*re (he even trumps Trump) is still out there. Perhaps he can confess, be "redeemed" and find another way into the spotlight. Allez, Lance!
  25. Maybe it's just me. Could we rename this thread "Don't Worry, Roy Haynes is Still Alive". Every time the thread resurfaces, my heart skips a beat (unlike Mr. Haynes).
