  1. That means that Freedom was an active label not just reissuing sessions?
  2. Okay. Then who's redesigning these sleeves??? Someone taking Patrick Roques's designs with no credit to him? This is an excellent pic, but Third Season was cut in '67, so Patrick Roques chose the right photo.
  3. 3 -... For instance, I consider Patrick Roques to have done even better Reid Miles covers than Reid Miles did. Huge Patrick Roques fan, so in the spirit of Reid Miles, but wow did he treat the Connoisseur series album artwork right. Patterns, Jackknife, Minor Move, gorgeous sleeves. Another favorite sleeve. Don't even know what Patrick Roques looks like.
  4. Get that, and probably you bought it at Peaches? The big record store in the '70's. I was still a kid in Florida, but loved that store including the record crates. So was Andrew Hill, Archie Shepp new Freedom label signs? Was this origianally on Freedom? How about this one?
  5. This one: Over this one? Haven't compared, but the sound on the Freedom/Polydor is quite good.
  6. Just a standout live great set. So glad to have it.
  7. The second disc plays fine until the last five minutes or so!
  8. Woah, wow, thank you for this insight, and I mean that (not being a dick at all).... what I meant by "inferior-looking" eg., Fontana: Shitty Black Lion/Freedom Sleeves: Who owns what? And the downgrade in art qualitly. Rather have an orginal Ploydor than a Freedom or Black Lion. Albiet, if it wasn't for Alan Bates, maybe we wouldn't have any of these titles. Guess I should be grateful.
  9. Like him in good company, especially with brass; who is his company?
  10. Maybe in the wrong topic, explain why Shelly Manne only landed a single leader date at Impulse! Namely this one:
  11. Wow. Never even seen this! Looks great. Now: Thank you, John!
  12. The last sleeve is the original. I have the Black Lion, but downloaded a copy shot of the Polydor sleeve, and wrapped it around that blah blah, Black Lion Cd sleeve; I did the same for the Curson, Tears for Dolphy, like any weird jazz nerd would do🤔
  13. This is where it gets interesting. Like was Black Lion a reissue lable only or signing artists too? Where does Freedom fit in? The more advant garde wing of Black Lion? Was Julius Hemphill, Andrew Hill, Archie Shepp, Freedom lable staples? Like Brilliant Corners, I've seen Polydor, Black Lion and Freedom forms of this record with all kinds of weird-ass cover art. What label did Stanely Cowell sign with, and do I have the original sleeve art as close as it can be? Here's the one I own: About Alan Bates, did he "found" Black Lion in 1968 as a forward releasing label, or was it a reissue program? For example I have these Black Lion CDs: Which is a Fontana issue, or Which is a Polydor release. Confused!
  14. Randall Goosby. What an incredible performer. Flawless, impeccable.
  15. So was Marion Brown, John McLaughlin, Stanley Cowell, signed to Polydor? When did Freedom and Black Lion come in the picture? Did they split the catalogue or is Freedom really a Black Lion imprint, or the other way around?
  16. I like the mid-60's BN Blue Mitchell period very much. Fun stuff. lols. 1870s was far funnier. Can't forget something I've never seen. What a lineup!
  17. 1879s, lols, that's some funny stuff! Good stuff. I bought Breakthrough right out of Dusty Groove, the last time (not this time) I was in Chicago a few years back. Glad I did, I believe it's a Dusty Grooove edition (it's packed in a box).
  18. Jazz peeps: Whgaty do you know about the label Polydor It looks like with my skim research on this board, that no thread exists on this label...tell me more. I understand that it seems that Germany and Britian in the early part of the century created Polydor. I want to know in the 60's why they went out jazz, and signed Marion Brown and John McLaughlin among others. Weren't they initally associated with classical, in collaboration with maybe Phillips? What you guys know about Polydor and their jazz program?
  19. Debut, legit, Japanese mini-lp/cd (plus OBI 😊) I picked up at Reckless Records in Chicago, that will replace my current, I don't know where it came from copy: Always thought that looked like Slash's head coming out of that lady's horn 🫠 I like these kind of stories! Get it. Can't tell you how many times I've said "no fucking way!!!" out loud in a record store when I would come across something totally unexpected or a complete surprise. Dizzy Reece's Blues in Trinity Conn edition is one of those outbursts of late.
  20. Never crossed it, and always been curious: how is it and who is playing on it; that is, who are the friends and who are the neighbors on 131 Prince Street?🤷‍♂️
