  1. Rush, Deep Purple, and Joan Jett are the ones I like to see get in. Heart is such a crappy group, I can't even.....

I can't believe Rush aren't already in the Hall. They should be...

And hey, as much as I love Public Enemy and Kraftwerk (and even, dare I say it, NWA), I still can't wrap my head around them being eligible for the "Rock 'n Roll" Hall of Fame. Ah well... not my gig, not my rules.

  2. Go BACK! Co BACK!

  3. "Ruining 'youts'" isn't a list of offenses.

But keep posting. Your character comes through loud and clear.

How sweet of you, Dan!!! Sticking up for one of your West Coast jazz brothers. You should be nominated for sainthood :)

And, YES it is. College is about learning, not about sports. Teaching the tough guy mentality to our "youts" has gone on for far too long. Where has it gotten us??? Chest bumping and bad ass talk in the NBA, shooting guns in the NFL, and so on.

If you don't get it, then you're more far gone than I thought.

Given how much you like to shoot your mouth off on this board, you must've lettered in at least a half dozen sports in college.

And thank you for enlightening me on what college is for... I'd have never guessed. Are you seriously asserting that one cannot learn through sport participation (other than "bad ass talk" and "shooting guns")? You might want to read some of the research literature on the topic before you spout such drivel.

  4. A brilliant, beautiful, genuine soul... I saw him play many times, and each time he showed how powerful and inspirational (yet humble) a gentleman he was.

RIP Sam, and may your spirit continue to soar.

  5. Sorry all, I meant to put Stan Getz on the list instead of Stan Turrentine. Although, to be honest, I far prefer Turrentine over Getz... but I certainly recognize that in any discussion regarding "influential" that Getz likely influenced more players than Turrentine.

Chuck, I'm definitely going to check Prince out to try and hear what you're hearing.

I voted for Ayler, mainly for the reasons Jeff posted above. I do wonder though... did John Gilmore influence Ayler more than Ayler influenced Gilmore?

  6. Based on the interesting discussions in the "Tenor Sax Taxonomies" thread, I got to thinking... if we assume that Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Sonny Rollins, and John Coltrane are the four most significant influences on other tenor sax player, who is number five?

So, it's poll time: In your opinion, who is the fifth most influential tenor sax player in the history of jazz?

Keep in mind that the board restricts the number of poll options to 10, so I was limited in who I could put in the poll... if you select "Other" (and I'm assuming many will), please let us know your choice.

Also, let's keep the selection to someone for whom the tenor sax was their primary instrument. For example, although I believe Charlie Parker was actually the biggest influence out of any of the tenor players listed above, the tenor sax was not his "main" instrument (the same could be said for Ornette Coleman... "Ornette on Tenor" is a hell of an album, but it doesn't quite fit here).

    Vote away!

  7. I'm not the person to ask but it could be Gene. In any event thanks for sharing Dan.

Dan, thanks for these tracks. I'm also not the person to ask, but it really doesn't sound like Gene to me. If it is Gene, he's really young here... not a whole lot of that GH swagger on these tracks. But, as you say, if these tracks are from 1959 or earlier that may have been something he was still in the process of developing.

Part of me is definitely hoping this is Gene... it's always nice to hear of new finds!

  8. Hi All,

I noticed a message on Michael Cuscuna's facebook page stating that Ruth Lion passed away on May 20. The link to the page is here:

The same information is related here, along with a nice video clip:

I never knew Ruth earned a doctorate, but I am thankful for her efforts over the years.

    R.I.P., Ruth.

  9. On the next page:

"Cannonball Quits Baltimore Club Over Jim Crow

"Announcing his intention to play only to non-segregated audiences, jazz alto sax artist Julian (Cannonball) Adderley cancelled an engagement at Baltimore's Villanova club after one night when the owner reversed his no-discrimination assurances. Questioned by the artist between appearances about the policy, the owner reportedly explained pressure from the Baltimore police department forced the Jim Crow arrangement. Previously assured admission but denied entrance opening night, a group of Negroes and local musicians met Cannonball outside the club."

And on page 30 of the same issue we find in the "Words of the Week" section:

"Julian (Cannonball) Adderly, jazz saxophonist, claiming segregation has affected musical ability: 'I can tell a musician's color by listening to his music.'"
