  1. Sad day. I was lucky to see Mickey play at Ortlieb's many, many times backing up Shirley Scott and, after she left, as a leader in his own right. He always had some amazing musician sitting w/ him - Cecil Payne, Jimmy Oliver, Johnny Coles. Last time I saw him perform was around 2006 w/ Von Freeman (his only Philly performance).

  2. Try Aldo Sinesio on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/aldo.sinesio

"Aldo" just friended me this week nearly 2.5 years after I sent him a friend request and nearly 1.5 years since he died!

The clasic "Unity" album by Sun Ra is available at eBay:

    http://www.ebay.com/...=item3f17a9feac

Got it myself a couple of months ago.

What is that? Is it a re-issue or new old stock?

That is what the original album cover looked like upon its initial release.

It certainly seems like new old stock. A great album really worth it's price. smile.gif

I bought two of those Sun Ra's (Unity & Other Voices) that were old dead stock - not bootlegs or reissues AFAIK. They were not warped or damaged in anyway. They sound fine to my ears.

  3. Be careful with La Vie de Boheme - black label first pressings have a "stick" or a "locked groove" in the drum solo on side two. I've had three or four copies and have checked others and it's endemic. Orange label second pressings and Japanese pressings don't have this issue, apparently.

The Arthur Jones and Jacques Coursil "Black Suite" were also released concurrently by America Records with much better sound.

I get spares of Actuel titles from time to time, so I'll let you know if I get one that you want.

I don't remember my copy having that problem. Unfortunately I can't check on it right now because my stereo has been temporarily disassembled. My copy of Andrew Cyrille's What About? does have the lock groove issue.

  4. Except unlike 2009 their projected starting 2B and 3B are Brian Roberts & Kelly Johnson.

And their shortstop is a greybeard who played 18 games last year due to injury and, what else ... oh yeah, the greatest closer in history is sitting home in Panama and even if their set up man takes over and does a decent job, who is the new set up man?

    I got it ... they'll trade for Papelbon! :g

Please God, make that trade happen.

Get well soon Michael Jack Schmidt!

  5. Braves are building a new $700+ million stadium outside of Atlanta in Cobb county. With interest you have to figure the real cost of the bonds.....will be around $2 billion+. Turner field was built in 1996.

Cobb County tax payers are getting royally screwed so some billionaires can collect more corporate welfare. Funny how Cobb County can't find enough money for their public schools but they have an extra $450 million for the Braves.

  6. Sixers traded for Andrew (bad knee, but I am going to still bowl) Bynum who never played a game for them before he took his "services" to Cleveland (you can't make this up!)....hey, he at least had the Afro!

Sixers then traded Jrue Holiday in a trade with the Pelicans for a very one dimensional Nerlens Noel....who blew out his ACL in February of this year. He's now not expected to play anytime this season. His knee is so bad that even him waiting a year and playing in Feb. 2014, but still this season is too much.

Noel does have the Kid N' Play Hi-top fade.

Just how many millions for two players that haven't played a single game for the Sixers?

Bynum's contract was covered by insurance so the Sixers didn't pay him a dime. Noel is signed to the standard NBA rookie contract so they are actually saving money by drafting him and trading Holiday. The Bynum trade was horrible and I and many other Phillly sports fans said so from the moment it was announced. I liked the idea of trading away Holiday(Sixers were going to be a perennial "bubble" team with him which is the kiss of death in the NBA. Plus Holiday has big contract which would have hampered their rebuilding efforts. He's a very good player but not someone you would build around.) but for Noel?? Yes, his knee gives me pause but his lack of an O game worries me too. The kid is RAW. They should have passed on him.

I think the Sixers have a legit shot at bettering their NBA season record of 9-73. I think winning even 6 games is a stretch for this team. Sad.

  7. Oakland had their chances.

But home field or not, my money is on those scrappy A's.

Now that's the Koji we came to know & love in Texas!

Tampa Bay don't stand a chance going forth, and Joe Maddon is getting into Mike Sciosa territory with that Look That Makes Me Want To Smack Him Some Kind Of Silly (as does Fernando Rodney's cap angle), but that was a fine game of good clean watching everybody you don't like have to suffer, if only for one night. Napoli's visibly frustrated having to make the out at first and let the tying run score was just collateral damage. We still love the Naps here (as we do the PADMY in LA). But the world is not perfect.

The Official World Series Narrative is likely to be Dodgers vs Red Sox - ONE YEAR LATER: WHO GOT THE BEST OF THE TRADE?!?!?!?!?!?! but I'm still hoping against reality for a Pirates/A's showdown. Where's the "narrative" there? Not one? Perfect!

    Bite your tongue.

If the [hated] Dodgers get to the WS it will be a sad page in the history of the MLB. Buying your way in is NOT what baseball is supposed to be about.

I don't know why you like to pretend the Giants didn't buy their two....like the Red Sox, Phillies, Angels, etc....even the Diamondbacks bought theirs. The Giants only had any chance of winning once they started spending. Now, they're headed back to that land being relevant every so often unless they keep spending. They, like the Dodgers already have the advantage of being in the weakest division in the MLB....but only gets them so far.

It's like the Niners didn't buy all those Super Bowls while DeBartolo, Jr. was throwing around all that DeBartolo Corporation money before the hard cap in 1994/1995 season, which was the last Super Bowl game for them until last year.

As in, glass houses and all.

The Phillies didn't buy their 2008 WS win. They won with home grown talent and a few low priced FA's. The only notable acquisition they made during the 2008 season was a trade w/ the A's for future Hall of Famer Joe Blanton which added about $1.8M to their payroll that year. In 2008 their team payroll was $98M which put them 13th highest. They didn't go crazy w/r/t spending until after they won. Now if you want to say they tried to buy a championship in 2010-13 you would get no argument from me.

  8. Random thoughts...

I would hate for my team to be in a 1 game playoff but it sure is fun watching them when your team isn't playing.

If it's too loud then you're too old.

Giants overpaid for Pence. But if he had gone to the FA market some idiot like Ruben Amaro, Jr. would have paid him even more.

  9. Tough break for Matt Harvey. Looks like Tommy John Surgery for the Met ace.

A third of the current pitchers have had it. The majority of the time it happens after the All-Star break. Interestingly, many/most pitched in the the one worthless game in the season....that now decides which league has more home games in the World Series.

While I think TJ surgery is becoming more common place - just ask the fans of the Rangers, Nats, or Braves - to say that 1/3 of all MLB pitchers have had that procedure done is a bit of an exaggeration. To the best of my knowledge none of the pitchers on the Phillies current 40 man roster have ever had TJ surgery. Of all of the pitchers that have thrown for the Phillies this season(that's more than 20) only 1 that I know of - Mike Adams - has had it.

Tough break for the kid. I enjoyed watching him pitch even when he was crushing my team.

  10. I agree with the comment about adding Mickey Hart back in to the band.

Never as good as 1970 - 74 which is my favorite period. The second drummer, just like (IMO) when a great jazz band adds a second percussionist, stifles the flexibility of the band. It also coincided when the band's sound became heavier and fuller (at least on the live shiows I have from 77 & 79) with the seocnd drummer added to the mix.

Agree with all of this. Mickey's first stint in the band was incredible but they never really got back to where they were in 72-74 when he rejoined.

  11. The disappointment of the Division has to be the Nats. Phillies should be better and Mets are around where they should be (a little better actually than people thought) but everyone expected Nats to be one of the best teams in the League, let alone the Division.

Oh definitely. I picked the Nats to win the division. I thought they would win a 100 games this season. It was definitely a WS or bust season for them. You have to wonder if last year was their best shot.

  12. I pre-ordered the blu ray. My 2nd favorite Dark Star, after 2/27/69 of course. It will be nice to have a clean version of this film after watching numerous boots of it over the years.

4/24/78 just arrived. I'm still working through the '77 box. Another reason why I'm not springing for Sunshine Daydream. As The Beatles sang, it's all too much.

A note about the film: very disappointing that there's so little Keith footage. That may have been the fault of the amateurish cameramen, but still. The segment of the baby with the ice cream and the dog is priceless; worth the cost of admission.

Heck . . I still have only listened to DaP's 6 one time all the way through, let alone May '77. I've barely touched the surface of Spring 1990 as well. Since this is not going to be limited edition, I will wait a while before I purchase

Really? Dead.net says it's an "individually numbered, limited edition of 12,500." Will there be a more general release? That would be good; I just want the music.

I would recommend getting a 2nd opinion for confirmation, but I'm fairly certain that it's just the tie-dyed slipcase, book and individual number that is limited, or a "dead.net exclusive." A version without these features will be available from other outlets later on.

They definitely will release an non limited edition just like they did with the Europe '72 box. They got burned on the LDBS by making it a one time only thing. They won't make that mistake again.
