  1. I think there will come a time when the jazz cd market will be made of 90% reissues. With music programs in Elementry & High Schools drying up, who, in the future will be able to play this music? Where will the new talent come from? Maybe Europe will become the creative nexus in the coming years, since they still teach music to kids. An added factor is, frankly, it's just too damn expensive to maintain a cd buying habit. I would be willing to take more chances on artists I don't know at $11.00 a pop, but not when list is commonly now at $18.99. It really is a bad sign when a city like San Francisco now has not one single jazz club! Being a jazz fan can be a downer at times. :(

  2. After years of looking, I finally found of copy of Bobby Hutcherson: Live at Montreux at my local used cd store for $6.50. Nice cd, even Woody Shaw is good on it (he is not one of my favs by any means). To think, I had given up on ever finding this at a decent price.

  3. Anyone have the Bennie Green Mosaic? I have all the material except for the Ike Quebec session & the 45's. So, is the sound improved over the TOCJ's of Green? I might be worth the money just to hear Jug & Green "singing" together, in remastered sound. Opinions on the set greatly appreciated.

  4. Well, on a former jazz board, I went by the name JuJu for most of the time. I chose that name because when I signed up, Wayne Shorter's JuJu was playing on my computer. Then I decided that after over two years I would take the step of using my real first name. I felt that comfy with the people there. When I did, the boad closed down! Sorry, I know it was my fault. When I signed on here, I debated whether to use something different, JuJu, or Matthew. Decided on Matthew after all -- it just doesn't sound right to be called JuJu. Plus people like Ed, Lon, Chris, et.al., were a good example to follow.

PS: I feel just as comfy with the people here.

  5. I've been turning my amp & cdp on in the morning, then at night, turn it off. I've been toying with the idea of leaving it on 24/7, but I have visions of a Big Bang! followed by fire. My system is in my bedroom, so I'm still trying to get my nerve up to leave the system on.

  6. One of the things you need to be aware of is that you will need to buy a phono-amp for your system, and that will cost about $100. My rig is close to yours, (NAD 320BEE, NAD 341i cdp, Dynaudio Audience 52 speakers) and I bought a MMF 2.1 that is a very good entry level turntable. Mine cost $300, but if you can afford a 5.1 or 7.1, get one because that are supposed to be great. I'm in the process of saving my money for the 7.1 since I like my present turntable so much.

  7. DAMN!!!! Read this baby and know it's going to appear on the new BNBB!

    What a joke.

  8. Grateful Dead: The Golden Road. I'm amazed how much I'm enjoying the Dead right now, can't get enough. Great box set. I got it so bad that I'm listening to the "Barton Hall, Ithaca, NY 5/8/77 set 2" now as I type, and it's 6:00 a.m. I can feel a major Dead buying spree coming on.

Lou Donaldson: Blues Walk. Found a lp version of this and it smokes.

  9. Thanks for the great recommendations, and the great rundown of the various era's. I bit the bullet last night and bought The Golden Road, and I'm enjoying the early stuff more than I expected, especially the early live stuff on disk 2. The music is becoming very enjoyable and interesting to listen to. I think I'm hooked. :o

  10. On a whim, I recently bought the Dead's Live in Europe, and I must admit, I loved it. So, given all the Dead out on cd, where is a good next step? Should I spring for that big box out there, or pick and choose? Any help is appreciated.

PS: And I know your first recommendation would be that I spell Grateful Dead correctly!

  11. WHIP comes out of Fantansy Baseball, and it is a stat that tells you the quality of a pitcher. The math is this: WHIP Ratio (WHIP) = (Walks + Hits) / Innings Pitched. How does this work? Say a pitcher went 7 innings and gave up 10 hits and 4 BB's, which adds up to 14. So it's 14/7=2.00whip. 2 is consided bad, anything below 1.2 is very good, with anyone, especially a starter, under 1.00 is fantastic, and the kind of pitcher you would love to have on your team.

    Makes sense?

  12. More proof of how clueless Rumsfeld is. Why give this to Jordon who did jack for the victims of 9/11? This worship of Jordon is going to sickening levels.

    Associated Press

WASHINGTON -- Before his final home game as an NBA player, Michael Jordan received a flag from Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld at center court.

It was the only bit of ceremony preceding Jordan's final home appearance Monday with the Washington Wizards, for whom he has played two seasons in his second comeback. A bigger tribute was planned to follow the game, with the details kept secret.

Rumsfeld, who received a loud ovation, presented Jordan with a flag that flew over the Pentagon on the one-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. Jordan cradled the flag in his right hand with head bowed during the national anthem before tipoff of the game against the New York Knicks.

Jordan's introduction during the starting lineups was a letdown, with the cheers not much greater than the ones for Rumsfeld. The MCI Center crowd gave Jordan a standing ovation that lasted a mere 25 seconds, some 3½ minutes shorter than the one he received in his final game at Chicago earlier this season.

Then again, Jordan himself tried not to make a big deal out of the game, with his greater focus on what he says will be his final NBA game ever -- Wednesday's season finale at Philadelphia.

"It's just another night really,'' Jordan said after the morning shootaround. "I know that this is my last home game in Washington, D.C., and that is something I definitely will treasure, but I woke up this morning and I thought that there was this certain feeling that I should be feeling -- and I had breakfast, coffee, did my normal stuff -- and nothing seems out of the ordinary.''
