January is "Give the drummer some" month on Blue Lake Public Radio, and last night we heard recordings by drummer Rudy Royston, a versatile percussionist/educator originally from Denver who debuted his "303" in 2014 with Jon Irabagon, Nadje Noordhuis and others; has toured and recorded with Tia Fuller, Dave Douglas and Bill Frisell. Last night Blue Lake Public Radio celebrated the life and music of Gene Krupa by opening each of the five hours with some of his music, either with Benny Goodman, Eddie Condon, his own big band or small group, and a Jazz at the Philharmonic appearance.
