More than positive Tom. Very enthusiastic :tup . Now listening to the Sal Salvador sets on Discs 7 & 8. You know that vocalists are not really my 'thing' (I much prefer instrumental jazz), but the Johnny Hartman session is very, very good.

This is one of those Mosaic sets where the individual sessions seem to sound better as part of the whole set, rather than on their own. I can't explain why that should be, but it's true for a few other Mosaics as well, the Elvin Jones set , for example.

I have the Elvin Jones SHM-CDs and I think these albums stand on their own pretty well, though the excellence of the new remasters might be a factor in this. It is just that the later Blue Note albums aren't as good as Puttin' It Together, The Ultimate, Poly-Currents, Coalition, and Genesis. I never enjoyed the Lighthouse albums. Perhaps I should listen to them again.

The Complete 1936-1940 Variety, Vocalion and Okeh Small Group Sessions

This song is a real hoot; not something I'd ever guess was an Ellington tune.

Perhaps that's because it is not an Ellington tune.

It was recorded at least three times in 1939 -- by Barney Bigard (June 8), by Cab Calloway (July 17), and by Leo Watson (August 22).

The composer credits on these versions are to Irving Mills, Buck Ram, and, in some cases, Cab Calloway.

The tune is actually based on a much older Yiddish tune.  See here for more information:  https://books.google.com/books?id=A8ARlEuPYAQC&pg=PA78&lpg=PA78&dq=utt-da-zay&source=bl&ots=MpoYEHj9Qu&sig=Td8PsLG-nXhMwR4zVOekU2zPmNA&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiH4MCBsfLUAhVqzFQKHYX0CiE4FBDoAQhEMAc#v=onepage&q=utt-da-zay&f=false
