Eddie Palmieri

He's more than just a "Latin-Jazz Pianist", he a pioneer amd legend who's been around as both for over 40 years.

Go to Descarga.Com and see what's available.

THE SUN OF LATIN MUSIC & UNFINISHED MASTERPIECE (both originally on Coco, and both now on CD, I think) are perhaps his crowning achievements, afaic, but I'll listen to the guy any time, any place.

Charlie, his brother, was no slouch either.

I seem to underwhelm everyone here with my live performance commentary but I'll give it another go.

There is still tomorrow to catch Palmieri and his sizzling band at Yoshi's. I caught him last year, and like last year, he opened with a long, elegant piano solo. He plays so wonderfully. He flows through up tempo, ballads, into salsa, before ending the solo. This is actually my favorite part of the set. The piano is probably my favorite instrument and it is such a joy to see someone who can play as well as Palmieri.

The 8-piece band (nine if you include the vocalist) opens up with a song that just singes your eyebrows. He had two trombones, guest trombone Jimmy Bosch, was remarkable. I love that he has a woman in the band, so rare in jazz even today. She plays flute and is terrific. The vocalist evoked Latin singers from another era. I felt like I had been transported in a time machine or something. They played one real ballad, but mostly they had everyone jumping around in their chairs.

If you are in the neighborhood shows on Sunday are at 2PM and 8PM.

Band Lineup:

Eddie Palmieri - Piano

Jimmy Bosch - Trombone

Doug Beavers - Trombone

Karen Joseph - Flute

Eddie Resto - Bass

George Delgado - Congas

John Rodriguez - Bongos

Jose Claussell - Timbales

Herman Olivera - Vocals

The above quote is from a thread I started on the Live Performance forum about Eddie Palmieri. I guess when it comes to music, I really am talking to myself here.

Eddie Palmieri is one of my very favorite pianists. The man can play. My pick of his recent, readily-available recordings is "El Rumbero Del Piano".

He and his band were great when they came to Central Michigan University in the 1990s. They did not bring a vocalist that night, so the excellent musicians in his septet (including, of course, Eddie Palmieri), got to solo even more than usual. Also Eddie Palmieri introduced many of the songs with a piano solo.

My favorite vocalist that has performed with Eddie Palmieri is Ismael Quintana. Adoración!!

Charlie, his brother, was no slouch either.

Indeed. Charlie Palmieri's LP, A Giant Step (Tropical Budda 003), is a fine recording. He recorded it after recovering from a heart attack and stroke, but you'd never know that from his playing.

Don't know if this has been reissued on CD, but, if not, it deserves to be.

Eddie and La Perfecta Dos played the Tanglewood Jazz Festival Friday night in Lenox, Massachusetts. WGBH and WBGO collaborated on a live broadcast (Eliane Elais was also on the broadcast) that was also heard on WFCR in Amherst, MA and WAMC in Albany NY. The program was co-hosted by myself and Rhonda Hamilton from 'BGO

NPR recorded the evening's music and is uplinking it to over 100 NPR affiliate stations around the country. I don't have a carriage list but check your local stations to see if they are picking it up and when they are broadcasting it. It would be sometime this holiday Labor Day weekend. Enjoy!

If you dislike salsa vocals, check the sound samples before ordering - but the singer of his currennt band is very nice, I saw this band in Frankfurt a few years ago, and a TV brodcast from a Burghausen festival performance, where they were much better.

Palimieri dropped his vocalists entirely at some point, before the Palmas album, and has been featuring jazzy horns ever since.

It was in Germany - will check details when back home.

i've enjoyed palmieri's later recordings for some time, and i've seen his exciting live show on more than one occasion. one minor complaint, though. the last two times i saw palmieri perform, i noticed his enthusiastic "vocalizations" have become increasingly loud, to the point where it's sligthtly frightening and/or rather humorous. it's a loud grunting sound similar to the monosylabic grrrr that frankenstein's monster made in the movies. am i the only who's noticed this idiosyncracy?

A friend who collects latin stuff has some great Eddie Palmieri records whose names I forget. Those records prompted me to buy "Harlem River Drive featuring Eddie Palmeiri and Jimmy Norman"--though not as solid as those straight up latin jazz plates, this is latin twinged funky soul jazz with that early 70s vibe and some groovy vocals. I dig it!

I also like the Bobbi Humphrey song called "Harlem River Drive." Sorry if her name is like nails on a chalkboard to some of you... :g
