Joel Ross ‘Good Vibes’ featuring Brandee Younger

  • Joel-Ross-848.jpg

Vibraphonist Joel Ross is one of the standout artists in the recent resurgence of ground breaking jazz musicians coming out of Chicago. In 2019, Ross released his Blue Note debut KingMaker to universal critical acclaim and topped the DownBeat Critics Poll Rising Star category for vibraphone. With the release of his sophomore recording Who Are You? in 2020, Ross solidly assumed his place as one today’s most promising young artists. Harpist Brandee Younger was awarded Rising Star Harpist in Downbeat Magazine’s 2020 Critics Poll.

“It’s clear that Ross is just getting started.” – Pitchfork

“The bright future stretching before Ross has as much to do with that emotional expression as anything that happens between his mallets and those metal bars.” – NPR

Have you been to that Windmills joint yet? We were at NFM lst weekend and I couldn't find it, even using the phone GPS. But I know it's there, somewhere!

Yes, once. I also had trouble finding it. It is separate from the big outdoor mall, though you could walk to it from the mall in terms of it being a short distance. It has its own parking lot. It is closer to the freeway than the mall.

Its a nice place; someone spent a lot of money on it. I haven't tried the food. As far as a music listening room, it was okay but not really optimal; decent sound but lots of distractions (a loud bar) and people walking by all the time. I've been meaning to go back as they have had some offbeat bookings. Maybe this weekend.

Particularly intriguing is the Saturday lineup, where penultimate artist Dianne Reeves is to be followed by Cameo. Word up!

Particularly terrifying is the Sunday night jam:

TRIBUTE TO JAZZ

MEMBERS OF THE DALLAS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Featuring B.SLADE

JOHN MCLAUGHLIN

Guest Conductor

The notion of a jazz festival presenting a tribute to jazz...there ya' go.

I don't know Cameo. I caught the end of a Dianne Reeves set at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival three or four years ago and regretted not hearing the whole thing.

This Riverfront festival is very weird, like  smooth jazz fans are in control but they toss a tiny bone every now and again to actual jazz.

I had some interest in Gerald Veasley, but it looks like he is not leading his own band, but rather is in the Masters of Smooth, which does not sound promising.

They also have Shelley Carrol in an organ trio.

Cameo used to be MONSTER big. I liked them a lot, no idea what their current show is, probably all the hits, but who knows. Back in the day, Cameo was at the top of whatever they were on top of.

It's just a VERY strange follow-up to Dianne Reeves. Even if Miles made a record with them.

I also recognize Dan Barrett, Rebecca Kilgore, Johnny Varro, and Brian Piper. Sounds like  a very "mainstream" oriented thing.

I like this:

Will there be an opportunity to meet the Jazz musicians?

You bet! In fact, they will be happy to autograph your program and, if you’re lucky, you might even have several of them sit at your table between sets! The atmosphere is open and friendly...conversations and photos between sets are highly encouraged.

IF you're lucky...you can talk to the animals. AND take pictures of them!

Welcome to the table, Daniela. There's sand in your hair.
