mgraham333
I was playing both Africa/Brass and The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady and noticed how nicely they played together. Does anyone have any suggestions for what might round out the rest of a 5-disc changer (if you have more suggestions, don't limit yourself). Looking for a similar sound. Thanks. Chuck Nessa
Add Mingus, Mongus, Mangus, Mungus, Mengus. You get the idea - if you want that thick ensemble sound. Two more slots to fill.
JSngry
Archie Shepp - There's A Trumpet In My Soul. Not as big of an ensemble, but the shitty recording quality blurs it to where you'll never know. Plus, the album goes through those moods like TBS&TSL does, or something thereabouts. Chuck Nessa
Since Jim opened up Shepp territory I suggest Fire Music and/or Mama Too Tight.
kh1958
McCoy Tyner--Song of the New World.
mgraham333
I didn't really care for the vocals on There's A Trumpet In My Soul but it led me to Bobby Hutcherson's Now (already on the shelf). I checked out clips for Mama Too Tight & Fire Music and those could be worth exploring. The McCoy was interesting too. Thanks all.
scottb
How about Sonny Criss - Birth of the New Cool? This one sounds very Mingus-like (or Mingussy if you will) to me.
Stefan Wood
Yes, BIG thumbs on on the Sonny Criss.
fent99
Max Roach's Its Time fills a space like this for me, though some might not like the choir. Lots of Impulse sets with a similar feel...
mgraham333
Birth of the New Cool has been on my wishlist for a while. I like "Sunrise, Sunset" from This Is Criss
JSngry
If you want one disc in the rotation that will give you the same thing only differently, consider Gil Evans' Svengali.
brownie
May I suggest George Russell's 'New York, NY'? Not exactly in the same mood but there is Coltrane on that one too and a lot of smashing solos and arrangements!
clifford_thornton
Hell, even the cuts from Cecil's Into the Hot session would work well - atonal R&B!
Kalo
Hell, even the cuts from Cecil's Into the Hot session would work well - atonal R&B! ← Great suggestion! I love that session.
montg
Max Roach's Its Time fills a space like this for me, though some might not like the choir. Lots of Impulse sets with a similar feel Speaking of Roach, Percussion Bitter Sweet on Impulse kind of fits into the vibe you're describing.
