ghost of miles
Pardon the late posting: the program is already archived and can be listened to immediately. Quote George Gershwin’s opera Porgy and Bess met with only middling success when it debuted in 1935, but stagings in the 1940s and 1950s ensured its place in musical history. With Hollywood poised to make a motion picture of the opera in the late 1950s, a number of musicians recorded jazz interpretations of the score, ranging from an ambitious Bethlehem record label project to a small-group version by guitarist Mundell Lowe. We’ll hear from those artists as well as Miles Davis and Gil Evans, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, Hank Jones, and Bill Potts on this edition of Night Lights; “Porgy and Bess: the 1950s Jazz Revival” airs Saturday, Oct. 15 at 11:05 p.m. on WFIU. Next week: "Peter Gunn." Edited June 13, 2022 by ghost of miles
ghost of miles
Reran this program last night and it will air this evening at 10 p.m. on Blue Lake Public Radio; the program is already archived for online listening under the Oct. 15, 2005 date. Stevebop and I were on the same wavelength last autumn, as he too aired a P & B special (it was the 70th anniversary of the original production, which may have been the reason for our mutual inspiration). Next week: "Jazz Advance--Early Cecil Taylor." Edited June 13, 2022 by ghost of miles

ghost of miles
Isn't that Potts great? I played the old Collector's Choice CD that came out in the mid-1990s, but I think it's available again... Porgy/Birdie

Incredible band lineup.
