I did a quick search and didn't see any threads on this. I've always enjoyed looking over people's end of year best of lists to see what might have slipped under my radar. I thoiught it would be interesting to list our facorite new releases and reissues of 2003.

So far, I know that my list would include:

New Releases (in no particular order):

William Parker Violin Trio - Scrapbook

Brotzmann / Parker / Drake - Never Too Late But Always Too Early

Andrew Hill - Passing Ships

Whit Dickey - Prophet Moon

Daniel Carter and Rueben Radding - Luminescence

Chris Washburne and the SYOTOS Band -- Paradise In Trouble

Lunge - Strong Language

Brad Shepik Trio - Drip

Keith Jarrett - Up For It

Gianluigi Trovesi Otteto - Fugace

Reissues -

Roscoe Mitchell - Snurdy McGurgy and Her Dancing Shoes

Miles Davis - Complete Blackhawk

Schlippenbach Trio - Pakistani Pomade

I'm sure I will think of more as they year winds down.

I'll second William Parker's "Scrapbook", the Brotzmann/Parker/Drake, Greg Osby, and Dave Holland. Outstanding releases. I would like to add Kenny Garrett's "Standard of Language", and for reissues, the Carmell Jones Mosaic Select, Miles Davis at the Blackhawk, and Woody Shaw's "Little Red's Fantasy".

I guess the Randy Weston Select would belong on that list, too! (I don't have it yet)

Then the recent Jimmy Lyons box (eagerly awaiting delivery...)

The Holland is a good one, but I don't think it would made it on my best list.

On the organ tip...

Red Holloway's "Coast to Coast"

Lonnie Smith's "Boogaloo To Beck" the material's thin but Lonnie is baaaadddd.

"Bop on Pop" with Sam Yahel on organ is another sleeper, but personal favorite this year.

....and actually Javon Jackson's "Easy Does It" grows on you.

and a little ol' band from Michigan, "Organissimo", ain't too shabby either. ;)

Shoot, why don't we do this up right?  Everyone keep throwing their nominations on here, come up with a ballot and have someone tabulate votes?  Or am I having a "second childhood fanboy" moment here?

If you are I'll join you all that needs to happen is we all nominate 5 New Releases & 5 Reissuse in 1 to 5 order . Number 1 gets five points , 2 gets 4 etc.

Add up all the points & the winner is the Organissimo forums 2003 Cd of the year.:party:

& the same goes for reissues .

Or everybody could nominate 10 - the system could be your number 1 gets 10 points , number 2 gets nine points etc.

there you go - clear as mud ? Thought so.

So many records, so little time...but my biggest fav this year so far:

Miles Davis, Complete Jack Johnson Sessions

It's old, it's new, it's wack, it's blue. Just been chewing up my little available listening time. And Johnny McL shoulda got co-leader credit (he kinda does in the notes). I especially like the bit where Miles plays something that sounds suspiciously like "Hang On Sloppy" and Airto answers him on kazoo...

I've recently heard a few more 2003 discs which will definitely make my "best of year" list:

Rabih Abou-Khalil - Morton's Foot. Another outstanding disc. I need to get all of his discs that I am missing.

Amplify 2002 Box Set - definitely not for everyone but, for those with a more adventurous disposition, essential listening.

Fennesz - Live in Japan

Seems to have been a good year for reissues rather than new issues.

Best new issue by far was

Martial Solal; NY1-Live At The Village Vanguard.

Runners up

Albert Ayler; The Copenhagen Tapes.

Gerry Hemingway; Devil's Paradise.

Reissues

Sonny Clark Trio; (Audio Fidelity)

Albet Ayler; Nuits de la Fondation Maeght

Miles Davis; In Person at the Blackhawk

Carmell Jones; Mosaic Select

Still to hear "Passing Ships", my first copy wouldn't play. I suspect the Curtis Amy Mosaic Select will score highy too.
