I thought it might be a good thing if people posted recommendations on one thread. (It certainly would be a good thing for someone like me who is fairly unfamiliar with the label and some of the artists who have recorded for it.) The only Clean Feed recording I have in my collection is Roswell Rudd/Mark Dresser: Airwalkers. I welcome any recommendations, and I'm sure others will too. This recent release is a trio with alto saxophonisit Rudresh Mahanthappa (Vijay Iyer's frequent collaborator), Mark Dresser, and Gary Hemingway. Ze Eduardo/Jack Walrath--Bad Guys. papsrus Posted November 21, 2008 Report Share Posted November 21, 2008 Three I've snagged this year after recs elsewhere on this board are: "Drunk Butterfly" -- Adam Lane / Lou Grassi / Mark Whitecage First-rate. They get some nice grooves going, and these three seem highly tuned in to one another. "The Beautiful Enabler" -- Gerry Hemingway (d), Mark Dresser (b), Rudresh Mahanthappa (as) Can't hardly go wrong with that lineup! "Stratostrophic" -- Ivan Johnson (b), Jason Mears (as), Kris Tiner (t), Paul Kikuchi (d) Was just spinning this one earlier. Excellent. Others I have enjoyed quite a bit are alto player Steve Lehman's "Manifold," and the several Clean Feed releases by trumpet player Dennis Gonzalez, particularly "Idle Wild" from 2005. Solid. Lots of good stuff in there - can vouch for the Bernardo Sassettis, Paulo Curado, Dennis Gonzalez, Trio Vriditas, Whit Dickey, Paal Nilssen-Love, Elliott Levin, Scott Fields, Otomo Yoshihide, Ravish Momin, Alipio C Neto, Herb Robertson, Joe Morris, Braxton... Late Posted November 24, 2008 Report Share Posted November 24, 2008 I think all of these are very good records — not just worth having, but worth close listening: • Dennis González: NY Midnight Suite • Kirk Knuffke: Big Wig • Empty Cage Quartet: Stratostrophic • Harris Eisenstadt: Guewel • Tetterapadequ: And The Missing R • Steve Lehman: On Meaning (I think this is Lehman's best recording to date) • Rob Brown: Crown Trunk Root Funk * There are a number of others, but these stand out in particular to me. For some reason, I haven't been able to get into any of Gerry Hemingway's work on this label, and I usually like his bands. Even the record with Ray Anderson, who wows me almost every time, didn't move me. In general, I'd say go for the names and/or bands you know almost nothing about. You're likely to be pleasantly surprised. * Aha! This CD isn't on Clean Feed. It's on Aum Fidelity. One of Brown's more interesting records (I think) so far.
