catesta
"You'll want to avoid the intersection at 52nd and 3rd as crews will be repairing a pot hole for the next several hours. The 101 and 405 will make good alternate routes. papsrus
Hard to believe this is real. Any geologists weighing in on this one?
Dave James
From the air, this looks like a bottomless pit. Sounds like a perfect place to throw all those 10-watt bulbs masquerading as the management of British Petroleum.
Dan Gould
I saw something on CNN about this. Its legit, and part of the reason for the collapse was an underground river, so the 18 inches of rain weakened the ground underneath which didn't go down to bedrock and the whole thing collapsed. catesta
Hard to believe this is real. Any geologists weighing in on this one? It almost looks as if the one photo has been doctored. The pics taken at an angle make it look much more shallow. I read this a little while ago so I guess it be real... sinkhole facts Edited June 2, 2010 by catesta
Jim Alfredson
The weird thing is, when I first saw this photo on FB I didn't believe it, so I did some quick Googling and the same photo was used in various news stories back in 2007. So is it real? I think so, but it happened some time ago, not just a few days ago as the current reports indicate.

BERIGAN
Hmmm, there does appear that there was a sinkhole in Guatemala back in 2007. here's picture of it. I don't see the green building that is seen in the other photos.
Claude
Sinkholes In February 2007, a large sinkhole opened in a poor neighborhood in northeast Guatemala city 14°39′1.40″N 90°29′25″W, killing three people. The sinkhole was 100 m (330 ft) deep, and apparently was created by fluid from a sewer dissolving the rock underneath. As a result, one thousand people were evacuated from the area.[20] The sinkhole has since been mitigated and plans to develop on the site have been proposed. In May 2010, another sinkhole, which was larger than a street intersection, developed after Tropical Storm Agatha. It engulfed a three story building and a house. 14°39′7.50″N 90°30′21.5″W [21] This 2010 sinkhole is at least 18 m (60 ft) wide and 60 m (200 ft) deep.[22][23] The distance between the recent (2010) sinkhole and the similar sinkhole three years ago is only about two kilometers (according to their coordinates). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guatemala_City
Dan Gould
The thing is completely legit as a new sinkhole. AP has video up on their youtube channel.
