Howard McGhee & Teddy Edwards - Young At Heart / Wise in Time

Does anyone have correct details about these fine recordings?

The band consisted of McGhee (t), Edwards (ts), Art Hillery (p), Leroy Vinnegar (b) and Billy Higgins (d).

Sessions took place on three days in October 1978 (Oct. 3-5) in Venice; CA.

Two albums were released on Storyville, of which I have SLP 4080 ("Young at Heart").

That one includes (from the back cover):

RELAXING AT CAMARILLO 7:36

REFLECTIONS 6:36

BLUES IN THE CLOSET 7:27

ON A MISTY NIGHT 4:32

IN WALKED BUD 4:01

YARDBIRD SUITE 4:07

MOOSE THE MOOCHE 7:00

Then there was SLP 4081, titled "Wise in Time", and containing, according to the discographies:

I WANT TO TALK ABOUT YOU

I REMEMBER CLIFFORD

IF YOU COULD SEE ME NOW

CRESCENT

RUBY MY DEAR

TIME WAITS

Then, there was a CD reissue mixing the contents of both LPs:

I WANT TO TALK ABOUT YOU (tk 2) 5:57

IF YOU COULD SEE ME NOW 5:59

CRESCENT (tk 1) 6:57

RUBY MY DEAR (tk 3) 7:35

TIME WAITS (tk 1) 4:59

RELAXING AT CAMARILLO (tk 1) 7:39

REFLECTIONS (tk 5) 6:45

BLUES IN THE CLOSET 7:27

ON A MISTY NIGHT (tk 4) 4:32

IN WALKED BUD (tk 4) 4:00

YARDBIRD SUITE (tk 3) 4:06

MOOSE THE MOOCHE (tk 3) 6:39

The discographies tell me that there was another tune, ALONE, to be found on STCD8273 (which also contains ON A MISTY NIGHT, IN WALKED BUD and MOOSE THE MOOCHE from the "Young at Heart" LP).

Now... what do these take numbers signify? That for the CD different takes were used compared to the LP? As I don't have SLP 4081, I don't know about that, but some of the timings for SLP 4080 and the CD are somwewhat different (I can't easily compare with my set-up, so I haven't tried to confirm if these are the same takes or not or if the timings on the LP are accurate).

Also I wonder, why would they do a CD with ALL of "Young at Heart" but give it the title of "Wise in Time" again, when they omit one track that was on that album (I REMEMBER CLIFFORD, which besides ALONE is the one title I don't have in any version).

Anyone ever cared to figure this out?

Apparently, the CD of Wise in Time (STCD8272) contains different takes than the other CD (STCD8273). My guess would be that "Alone" is actually "Alone Together," which was recorded at the previous Howard McGhee Storyville session with Benny Bailey (Home Run), but maybe not.

Back with an additional piece of information. It appears that STCD8273 IS the CD release of Home Run. I don't have it, but it apparently contains all of those bonus tracks. Funny thing - I have the LP of Home Run, and Alone Together is not on it. So that is evidently a bonus track as well.

Nice!! - some of Howard McGhee's last sessions

Also noticed on the Storyville website that the OOP Monk in Copenhagen CD (1961) is being reissued (the advertising blurb states that this is previously unreleased!!)

I didn't have to. My association with Storyville goes back 60 years, to a time when I taped the label's first original releases. Old ties never die, they just pop a CD into you mailbox from time to time :)

Also got the Boswell Sisters, which I have started listening to, and like very much.
