Warner Japan Jazz Reissues

With 200 titles already out and more batches coming next year this is a great reissue series! Sure, many titles have been out on CD before, but appear here in better sound and with original cover art. There are also a fair number of titles not on CD before or where a track was omitted on Collectables twofers.

The only thing I think could have been improved is that there should have been a foldout with the liner notes, as there is on the Japanese Blue Note CDs also coming out now. The liners only appear on the back cover and are difficult to read due to the small size. All things considered this is a minor quibble, as these are definitive releases in all other ways and moderately priced.

I am glad now that I never got that many Collectables CDs. I was intending to buy them eventually, since I figured there would be no more CD reissues of these albums by now. With all the talk about the death of the CD, I must admit that I did not see this massive Warner reissue program coming, nor did I the Blue Note LT and LA series that now simultaneously is coming out. The CD era is not over in Japan at least!

Ahh so they are including Elektra Musician titles? I have the Wounded Bird reissues of the "Griffith Park" albums and the JOS titles. Honestly, not much can be done to improve "Off the Top", it's a very thin sounding recording, dead drums, Stanley sounds like his horn is coming from an amplifier instead of miked where you get his tone. "Griffith Park vol. 2 In Concert" are soundboard recordings made on cassette so nothing can improve those.

"Off the Top" was also in the "piano key" edition of Rhino's ("Atlantic [or whatever] Jazz Masters", in this case "Elektra", I assume), and that edition included all but the piano medley of the other JOS Elektra album. Very good reissue, in my opinion (JOS and Griffin!)

Thanks a lot for putting together these lists - I slept on this series and I guess it's too late to find some of these reissues. But with plenty of them, I'm happy with whatever editions I have (Koch, Collectables, some vinyl, both generations of Atlantic digipacks - the later of those included other Warner labels, too, I think - and those Rhino reissues I just mentioned).

But there are some things I never came around to find (the Owens/Barron, for instance - fine one! never owned a hard copy of it, though) and this edition would certainly be the best choice if they can be found!

I'm going to take your word for it and order a bunch of these discs, starting with the 2012 releases. My only other experience with Warner Japan releases is a stereo CD of Giant Steps issued a few years back. I thought it was too loud and had too much bass like the latest US/EU releases.

I noticed on cdjapan that Coltrane's Giant Steps is also mono (you mentioned My Favorite Things). Do the Coltrane Atlantics have particular merit in mono?

Are any other discs (by any artist) expected to have mono over stereo sound?

Is there any better source than CDJapan to have discs sent to Europe?

Nearly 40$ for shipping three discs that cost less than 30$ is bit crazy - I could only order two at a time to evade custom fees and tax. Dustygroove seems not to carry them ... or at least not the one from 2012 I just looked up. Guess using re-sellers on amazon.fr is the way to go, as so often for Japanese discs.

JOS and Griffin should have been paired when Johnny made his BN dates, that twofer omits the piano track? both albums are just over 35 minutes I think.

And yes, alas they left off the medley - too bad, I'd have loved to hear it, but it shan't be then. I also have the LP of "Off the Top" and am not willing to spend any more money on that.

That can't be right. Shipping 4 of these CDs to The Netherlands cost me ¥900 (about €7) by SAL.

Also, check the gift option on checkout to have the custom's declaration marked as a gift. That allows me to import €45 instead of €22 free of pesky duties.

Besides being cheap, CDJapan's packaging is the best.

SAL to Switzerland, three discs in the cart ... try it!

Must be some "non EU" crap or some such.

Oops - I must have mixed up the total shipping and total order costs! Phew! Okay, consider CDJapan a *very* dangerous site now!

It is also dangerous in the sense that if you use the gift option it won't be remembered for your next order (unlike e.g. shipping method, method of payment).

actually, all three of his atlantic titles are in the series ('suddenly the blues', 'blues shout', and, in 'soul talk')...

Yes, I looked again after I posted and saw there was indeed a third one (Soul Talk). I've put in a order with CDJapan for that plus "Joe Castro - Groove, Funk Soul" & "Ronnie Ross/Allan Ganley - The Jazz Makers". Very reasonable prices, actually.

'Soul talk' and the Joe Castro are lovely albums. I have the Castro on a Collectables twofer, with the Ross/Ganley, which I've played once. What a silly combination... Fortunately, 'Groove funk soul' is the 2nd album, so I just start at #9.

MG

Like you I have the Joe Castro/Ronnie Ross on Collectables; it will be interesting to hear how the sound compares with these new reissues. The Joe Castro is one of my favourite albums so that's why I'm getting the upgrade (fingers crossed!).

what is it you two like about the joe castro date? the samples i heard sounded pretty straight which i thoght belived the title 'groove funk soul' but maybe each piece develops into something i didn't hear.

btw, i hope you're onto the young-holt title, MG...

I think I have the Young-Holt; I have 'Mellow dreaming' and 'Born again' in a 2 disc set issued a few years ago by Water. If I have stuff, I tend not to notice further reissues of the material :)

As to the Castro, 'Groove funk soul' is a misleading title - though possibly it wasn't in the fifties :) But Teddy Edwards, one of my favourites, is always worth hearing in this context (well, or any context where he can play) - this is the same band that made 'Teddy's ready' for Contemporary.

Seconded , also sound is very good despite each disc being slightly on the loud side they seem none the worse for it.

What MG said..........

It IS pretty straight-ahead but nothing wrong with that in my book. As well as the two albums he made with Teddy Edwards, mentioned above, the album he recorded at his home with Zoot Sims called "Live at Falcon's Lair" is also very good. Apart from these three albums and another he recorded for Atlantic with strings, I'm not aware of anything else he did. I guess partnering up with Doris Duke took away the need to have to work for a living. Anyone know whether he continued playing jazz later in life?

UPDATE:

I've just checked his entry on Wikipedia and see that he ended up playing in Las Vegas.

First impression is that these are all worthwhile purchases.

Changes One seemed an improvement over the 1993 disc. More detailed highs. A nice heavy detailed bass sound, not overpowering. Better than the piece of shit Atlantic Masters (2005) release.

This series is not only a tad loud, but it also has boosted highs - not annoyingly so, but still... :) I'm not a fan of this kind of "modern mastering" - and that's putting it mildly - but, as I said before, the series is listenable as far as I'm concerned. I may change my mind on second listening, though.
