Hello Phantom Dancers,
This Tuesday I'll be singing with my 1920s and 1930s jazz swing band, Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters, ( http://www.bakelitejazz.com ) at a Tea Dance. So I can't be in the studio to bring you The Phantom Dancer this week from 12 noon - 2pm.
Instead, please enjoy a special ENCORE PRESENTATION! That's commercial TV talk for REPEAT! You can hear it online, Tues 18 March, 12 noon - 2pm (+11GMT) at http://www.2ser.com and over 107.3 2SER Sydney.
But I do have a whole, new Phantom Dancer Video of the Week for you. Mildred Bailey sings 'Rock It For Me' from 1938 (with Red Norvo on vibes) - allegedly the first song to use the word 'Rock 'n' Roll' as a kind of music. Baby, baby, baby, whoa-oa-yeah!

Your April Fools Day Phantom Dancer makes no reference to April Fools Day at all. Because as I was told by my friends in primary school, April Fools doesn't work after 12 noon. And The Phantom Dancer goes to air at 12 noon, 107.3 2SER, Tuesday 1 April. Online http://www.2ser.com

Check out the April Fools' Day play list and your Phantom Dancer Video of the Week: Ben Pollack and his Park Central Orchestra, on the Greg Poppleton Radio Lounge Blog http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/2014/03/25/ben-pollack-park-central-orchestra-short-1929-phantom-dancer-tues-1-april/

The Ben Pollack clip features this amazing combination, and I quote form YouTube,

"In the band are Jimmy McPartland, Ray Bauduc, "Icky" Morgan, 19 year old Benny Goodman, brother Harry Goodman and Jack Teagarden who not only plays trombone but also sings in his own inimitable way and even plays vibraphone. The Ben Pollack Orchestra plays three tunes "California Echoes", "My Kind Of Love" and "Song Of The Island"." Enjoy

What a show this week. By request, a replay of the Benny Goodman Orchestra's version of The Hucklebuck from Surf Beach, Virginia. Les Paul and George Barnes play their electric guitars. Fairchild and Carroll tinkle their dual pianos.

This week's Video of the Week, 'This Is The BBC' released in 1960. A day in the life of BBC radio and TV. The big news story, 'The Russians have launched another Moon rocket.' For morning music, 'Mrs Ada Spillington of Suffolk would like some jolly music.' Don't we all. Midday music features the brilliant BBC Northern Dance Orchestra.

Hello Phantom Dancers,

Live radio swing by Tommy Dorsey and Duke Ellington, live radio ballads by Nan Wynn and Ginny Powell, live radio bop by Lester Young and Charlie Parker. There's 2 hours of swing and jazz for you from live 1920s – 1960s radio and TV on this Tuesday's Phantom Dancer with Greg Poppleton.

As your Phantom Dancer Video of the Week enjoy Annette Hanshaw with Don Voorhees and the Orchestra in this 'picturization' of the 1933 NBC radio series, Maxwell House Show Boat. Behind the scenes at WEAF NY in 1933. Enjoy it and read the play list on Greg Poppleton's Radio Lounge Blog http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/2014/04/29/annette-hanshaw-1933-radio-show-film-phantom-dancer-13-may-2014/

Hi-de-ho Phantom Dancers,
Some housekeeping on this week's Phantom Dancer. A few songs missed out on earlier shows by Annette Hanshaw, Freddy Rich, Ted Fio Rito and Phillippe Brun will be played this week.
Some live TV with Roy Eldridge and live airchecks by the great swing trumpeters Bunny Berrigan and Louis Armstrong.
And as your Phantom Dancer Video of the Week, a real winner for those of you like me who are into streetscapes. Sometime in 1948, someone took a drive around Los Angeles and filmed the streetscape with 35mm film. The picture quality is brilliant. And some of the blocks of flats look like they could be in Sydney's eastern suburbs. The smog is appalling! Enjoy.
See this week's play list and video at Greg Poppleton's Radio Lounge Blog http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/2014/05/07/1940s-streetscapes-phantom-dancer-20-may-2014/

Voh-de-oh-doh Phantom Dancers,

On this Tuesday's Phantom Dancer, online and on the air, Stan Kenton narrates his musical 'life in a band' called Prologue on an NBC Concert In Miniature. We'll also hear the latest Edward VIII abdication news and a bracket of live 1930s radio swing.

Now for your Phantom Dancer Video of the Week, a chorus line of flappers kicking up their heels on a beach to 'Cheer Up' played live by Ted Weems and the Orchestra, circa 1932.

See the playlist and your Video of the Week at Greg Poppleton's Radio Lounge Blog http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/2014/05/13/high-steppin-flappers-on-the-beach-phantom-dancer-27-may-14/

I couldn't be in the studio last Tuesday, June 10.
So I'm looking forward to playing lots of swing and jazz from live 1920s - 1960s radio and TV for you this Tuesday 17 June.
Time to warm up the set for this week's Phantom Dancer play list and Video of the Week.
On this week's Phantom Dancer hear Dick Freeman's Ensemble from Sydney in 1936, Al Jolson sings about Lifebuoy and Rinso the year after, and Stan Kenton blasts through your loudspeaker from WSOC Charlotte N.C. See the full
play list below.
And as your Phantom Dancer Video of the Week, some early TV, or at least an early depiction of TV. The Mills Brothers feature in a Fleischer Screen Songs short from 1932, singing Hold That Tiger and I Ain't Got Nobody. Sing along. Just follow the bouncing ball at Greg Poppleton's Radio Lounge Blog (for the video and today's play list)

The 1st of July. You know what that means - only just under 6 months to Christmas.
My, how time flies. It's like The Phantom Dancer. 2 hours seem to go by in, well, hopefully not 3.
Lot's of excellent 1920s - 50s airchecks for you this week.
The earliest is by the Ray Miller Orchestra, 25 Jan 1929. John J Anthony will be on-hand to dispense marital advice using the latest psychological methods. And there's great swing for you with song titles like 'The Morning After' and 'Let This Be A Warning To You.' So, let this be a warning for you, enjoy
And for your Phantom Dancer Video of the Week here is a Candid Camera episode from 1949, when they still also called it Candid Microphone, which was the name of the original radio series from which the famous TV show sprang. Happy listening and televiewing at Greg Poppleton's Radio Lounge Blog http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/2014/06/18/candid-camera-1949-phantom-dancer-show-tues-1-july/

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening Phantom Dancers wherever you are by your telescreens...

Meredith Willson gets a whole set on this week's Phantom Dancer backing singers Judy Garland and Dinah Show.

It's swing and jazz from live 1920s – 1960s radio and TV for your listening and dancing pleasure every week presented by Greg Poppleton.

My favourite singer and band for your Phantom Dancer Video of the Week. Dorothy Collins with then husband and bandleader, Raymond Scott, perform 'Singing In The Rain' on an NBC 'Your Hit Parade' show, 16 April 1955.

Hello Phantom Dancers,
The July 15 show of 1920s - 1960s swing and jazz from live vintage radio promises to be a little rip-snorter.
There's live radio swing and jazz by Jack Teagarden, Louis Prima, and very early George Olsen on the air in 1932. See the play list below.
And for your Phantom Dancer video of the week some Belgian swing from 1939, Boogy Boogy Boo.
See your Vid of the Week and Phantom Dancer play list at Greg Poppleton's Radio Lounge Blog http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/2014/07/01/boogy-boogy-boo-belgian-swing-1939-phantom-dancer-15-july-2014/

Hello Phantom Dancers,
On this Tuesday's show, presented by Greg Poppleton, you'll hear a set of live swing and dance from 1936, a bracket of show tunes including the hilarious 'I Only Come Down For The Day' and a closing set of live 1950s broadcasts of music moderne by Charlie Parker and Shelly Manne – plus lots, lots more. See the play list below.
But how does the sound from live bands travel from the studio to your radio?
Pay special close attention to your Phantom Dancer Video Of The Week. 'On The Air', promoting Chevrolet's radio show in 1937, will show you how it is done in 10 music-packed minutes. Enjoy!

Gosh, Phantom Dancers, will there be enough radio show time to fit in Shorty Rogers Giants from a 1950s Tonight Show? I've held it over from two weeks ago.

Certainly we'll hear live swing and dance by Benny Goodman, Jimmy Joy and more. And commercial recordings by Australian singer/comedian Cyril Richards, who blazed a career in London theatre and Broadway; as well as Buenos Aires guitarist and friend of Django Reinhardt, Oscar Aleman.

John J Anthony will be back to dispense sound advice.

This week's Phantom Dancer Video of the Week is an extraordinary performance of 'I Cried For You'. It's sung by Helen Humes with Count Basie at the piano with his small orchestra including Wardell Gray. Brilliant. See it with today's play list on Greg Poppleton's Radio Lounge Blog http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/2014/08/05/helen-humes-sings-with-count-basie-phantom-dancer-tues-19-aug-2014/

There'll be a low-fi mix of I Got Rhythm from 1930s and 1940s radio featuring Ella Fitzgerald and her Orchestra amongst others. Larry Clinton, the Dipsy Doodler, will serenade you from the Glen Island Casino over NBC in 1938, Dinah Washington sings over WJZ New York in 1951 and Benny Goodman has a bit of a bop thing going on a 1949 'One Night Stand'

This week, Part 3 in our 48 part series of 'Demonstrations in Physics'. Filmed at ABC Sydney in 1969, the always entertaining Professor Julius Sumner Miller uses toys to excite us about Newton's Second Law of Motion. Enjoy!

Ladies and gentlemen, it’s the first week in the Festival of Giving. That’s the 2SER Supporter Drive http://support.2ser.com/. 2SER is 35 years old this year (1 October to be exact). And The Phantom Dancer has been on 2SER 107.3 Sydney every week, and for some years twice a week, for 29 of those years, since 1985.
The Phantom Dancer, swing and jazz from live 1920s – 1960s radio and TV can only stay on 2SER, and 2SER can only stay on air, through your support.

As well as supporting 2SER’s cutting edge stories, music and ideas, there are plenty of prizes up for grabs and this year if you sign up with your lover or another, you will get a night in on 2SER. (see website for details)
This year Supporter Drive runs from October 13 – 25… It feels good to give, and we want to say thank you for listening.
