Herschal Evans

Jazz From Blue Lake celebrated the short life of tenor saxophonist Herschal Evans last night, the original “Texas Tenorman” who played a key role in the Count Basie Orchestra of the 1930’s, the “old testament” band. Evans big Coleman Hawkins-inspired sound was as a foil to the melodic rhythms of tenor saxophonist Lester Young.
