Muhal Richard Abrams – 1 - OQA + 19 [from The Complete Black Saint Recordings, Vol.2 box] (Black Saint—CAM Jazz)

Personnel:
Muhal Richard Abrams: piano, synthesizer, voice; Henry Threadgill: alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, flute, voice; Anthony Braxton: soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, flute, clarinet, voice; Leonard Jones: bass, voice; Steve McCall: drums, percussion, voice.

Having just enjoyed Abrams's piano solo on Marion Brown's "Sweet Earth Flying, Part 5" (and enjoyed the Anthony Braxton CD I played before the Brown), I felt compelled to play a Muhal Richard Album. (As a bonus, this one also features Braxton.)

The Smithsonian Folkways CDR reissue of this album.  Ms. Williams talks about jazz and plays examples of different styles -- blues, boogie woogie, KC swing, etc.  Not the highest of fi and there is no information that even a moderate jazz fan might not already know, but it's worth a listen.

I can't comment on her French and Portuguese skills, but it's a lovely album.

One of her best albums.  Here she was backed by a simple quartet of masters:  Hank Jones, Gene Bertoncini, Ron Carter and Grady Tate.  None of them really get any solo space, but they know exactly how to accompany a singer.

Kirk Knuffke - Little Cross (SteepleChase 1799, 2015).  Kirk Knuffke - cornet; Jamie Saft - Hammond B3, synth; Hamid Drake - drums.  Man, I'm loving this one.

Great album. Knuffke is almost a guarantee of something excellent.

These Roulette LPs sound fantastic. (I also have the Warner Japan cd version which also sounds fantastic).

A really well-chosen overview of the Roulette material.

Very 1972 that cover. No expense spared on colour !

I notice from Wikipedia that he played on a number of Donovan sessions. Hence the non-jazz musician get-up? Saw him play a couple of times at Scott's and very good he was, too. Sadly died in 1971 at the age of 39.

On to record 2 as I cook dinner. Thinking about Basie on Roulette. . . . A real peak for this band. The music is often so jubilant and grateful sounding. A great salve for the blues or the negativity we sometimes have to slog through and be tired out by.

No Pres. . . love Pres with Basie. . .but Davis and Foster et al are filling the void well. Sonny Payne really drives this band and Basie himself often seems inspired in ways he wasn't before or since.

Luckily Warner Japan has reissued the albums on cd in great sound. Nothing extra, but each of those albums are well-sequenced works of art. And the sound! So full and swinging!
