Dub Modal Posted July 29, 2021 Report Posted July 29, 2021 CD 1 of this last night as I love the small group stuff that Jimmy & Wes did. Some of the tunes were taken from Just Walkin' which had previously unissued takes when it was released in '71. There's something about how these guys play together that intrigues me...anyway, led me to more B3 magic from this: Disc 1. I've got no idea what Jack Dieval is doing on piano, and I don't care because the music here is terrific. Quote
jazzbo Posted July 29, 2021 Report Posted July 29, 2021 A new Helen Merrill release from Japan! "With Friends in Yachiyoza" Helen Merrill, Masahiko Sato, Hozan Yamamoto, Sakai Benisuki Quote

This is a great disc if you are a Merrill fan. Alice Coltrane "Kirtan: Kuriya Sings" Impulse/Universal Japan SHM-CD A newly configured version (stripped down) of the original (cassette) release from Alice Coltrane. Pretty amazing actually. I ordered this months ago from Japan and didn't realize there was a US release as well. That one is arriving today. I'll be able to do a comparison. Quote
Dub Modal Posted July 29, 2021 Report Posted July 29, 2021 I really enjoy this album. Salvador isn't ever mentioned in the all time great jazz guitar discussions that I've read, but his tone and playing make for great listening. And the band on this album is top notch. Quote

I do like enjoy his Bee Hive recordings, especially the one with Brignola. I would love to hear the story about how Silvio Smiraglia became Sal Salvador. Quote

HutchFan Posted July 30, 2021 Report Posted July 30, 2021 I wasn't sure whether to post this Nascimento record on this thread or on the "Not Jazz, Not Classical" thread. Wayne's on the album, so I'm putting it here. Quote

And of course he had his moment of glory in the film Jazz on a Summer's Day where he was seen playing with Sonny Stitt. 9 hours ago, jlhoots said: Farnsworth is great. It took me about ten years to realise how unusual the playing is compared to what was happening all around at the time. I'm a great evangelist for it, since it seems to have slipped from the public eye recently, and Garner doesn't have much name recognition these days. Quote
