That album cover terrified me the first time I saw it!

Eat that chicken!

When I hear that track I recall that during one of Roland Kirk's seasons at Ronnie Scott's in the 60s he spend a lot of time in Dobell's Jazz Record shop, leaning on the counter and demanding to hear one Fats Waller record after another.

Wow!

Some quiet, rainy day jazz is on deck for today:

  • Paul Desmond - Polka Dots & Moonbeams (RCA)
  • Phones Newborn - While My Lady Sleeps (RCA)
  • Stan Getz Plays for Lovers (Concord Jazz)
  • Guitar Moods by Mundell Lowe (Riverside)

:D :tup  great LP

Bill Holman was in the 1980ies one of the leaders of the WDR Big Band in Cologne along with Mel Lewis and played many of his great  compositions the first time here in Germany, sometime  first a rehearshed studio version and then a public concert. Everything transmitted by german radio Cologne (WDR)

At that time the WDR big band had no regular drummer so Mel sat in very often also with other US guests. Great times will never come back!

Looks like a 1977 Honda CB-400F Super Sport. I had one of those for several years. It was a fun bike. My wife might've looked something like that back then too. :)

You can tell it's a 1977 because of the higher handlebars. The older models had "cafe racer" style handlebars.

The 4-into-1 exhaust was also very distinctive on that bike.

I had a CB-650 back in the day.  Honda inline fours rule.  ;)

I saw Holman only once - in the 90s at the Wigan Jazz Festival with the orchestra that made the Monk album. It was particularly nice to see some veterans of West Coast Jazz of the 50s - not just Holman himself, but also Bill Perkins and Bob Enevoldsen.

I met him once. Chatted with him about touring with Vic Lewis !  Nice guy. Perkins and Enevoldsen were around at that event too, also in the 90s.

Cy Touff was conducting a recreation of his ‘Keester Parade’ band but no longer playing by then.
