Steve Beresford, Toshinori Kondo, Dave Toop and Tristan Honsiger - Imitation of Life (Y, 1981)

My favourite of the second free improv gen's records.

It's amazing how similar it is to other groups with no lineal connection to this music, whether the Holy Modal Rounders, Sebadoh or the Residents.

It's a total desecration.

If I had known that, I wouldn't have sold the LPs. Fantasy sometimes did that, or left off a track, but always noted this. Not on the back liner of this CD.

Mike, I posted an Earland discography here some years ago in which I'm SURE I noted this.

Yes, I know, but my sale was before that or I didn't notice that detail.

Ah, timing is everything.

I love it. It was one of the favourite of us during those times in the 70´s. It still sounds so fantastic, I never get tired of it. And really a dream team, Freddie, Joe Henderson, Herbie, Ron, Lenny White.

I don't think I've heard this one. Looks very good. This is different than the Peacock Lane date, right? (which I believe was recorded in 1957).

Here are the tracks. There is no exact rec. date listed in the liners. But IMO its the same as the Peacock lane CD from Freshsound (FSCD-1016) which has listed as recording date December 1956

Old and New Dreams - Old and New Dreams (ECM, 1979)

Old_and_New_Dreams_(ECM_album).jpg

I started listening to jazz in the late 1990s, when the "ECM sound" was definitely too much of a thing. I can't imagine how it must have felt to have bought a record like this one when it came out, and suddenly be transported for the first time into a sound world/production that was so crisp you could almost see under Charlie Haden's fingernails or count each individual droplet on the bell of Don Cherry's trumpet.
