This is an interesting link for the elder fans .

I had listened to the VOA via long wave in the years after WW II

I too was a listener until VOA Jazz Hour was discontinued round about 1963.

Ronnie Cuber/Gary Smulyan: Tough Baritones (SteepleChase)

:tup

Ronnie is some big guy! I've met Gary and he isn't particularly diminutive.

Now listening to:

One I would like to listen to.
First-world-problem I guess, but I wonder why Steeplechase has recently reissued LPs (Baker, Shepp, Jordan, Gordon) that were still quite easy to obtain while they never produced any LP from their recent (past 30 years) but rich catalogue.

There are certainly some interesting 180g LP reissues of late. At least one of guitarist Monnette Sudler’s 70s LPs has come out again - those got a bit of a stir/good reviews when they came out but weren’t around for long.

The albums from the CD era probably have more music than would fit on an LP. Re-editing the masters would cause additional costs, while you simply can pull the master tapes of releases from the LP era.

Now is Smulyan a small guy or Cuber a big guy?

I've got Organic grooves and its follow up, Bongo bop. There was a bunch of that stuff being made around that time. The Chartbusters were another lot. Dr Lonnie' 3 albums for Venus with John Abercrombie were much in the same line. A few others. They all seemed like the people - all good players without a doubt - were trying too hard to impress. I've not flogged them, but I know I can do without them.

The only one a really like is Akira Tana's 'Secret agent men', which sounds like the guys were just having fun with stuff.

Also, I love Lonnie's heavy disguise on the sleeve.

I bought this one on your recommendation and like it, but I dig all those Essence All Stars albums a bit more.

Oh, I recommended it back in the day, eh? :g

Whenever I see the name Milan Simich, I'm reminded of what Chewy said that Lou Donaldson said to him about the sleeve of 'Here 'tis'. "Em semmich".
