Remember those PD jazz boxes?

"the PD labels" is a very broad brush. Not all are equal.

Of course not, but the conversation took some twists and turns.  I wasn't suggesting that all PD labels are equal.

And it's not about punishing corporations.  It's about making the music available.  We can decide which ones we want to buy and which we don't.

But how? Should we be "thankful" for truly inferior product just because it's 'there"?

I believe " I can do bad by myself" is the expression...

The 2009 Universal fire proved that record conglomerates are not in the business of cultural preservation, as though we needed any further proof.  So, yeah, in some cases, I am very thankful for these releases.

Do I buy many of them?  No, and I believe that I own only two of those cheap PD jazz box sets.  One of them sounds great, the other sounds lousy. C'est la vie.

At the end of the day, I believe in making the music available.  If the rights holders have no interest in doing this, I am indeed thankful for other options.   I am not going to wait all my life for an ideal release that will never happen.

Nobody's talking about waiting for an opportunity to buy anything.

Getting the music to hear and buying it are totally different things.

If I want to hear something bad enough, I can find a way that doesn't involve buying bullshit.

Getting music and buying music, totally different things, totally different discussions.

Clear thoughts to all!

The weird thing I don't quite understand is that, while classical music and jazz seem to be just about neck and neck in sales and overall consumption ( at the bottom), we seem to be enjoying a golden age of classical reissues including many obscure recording artists besides the mega-boxes that seem to take more and more space in my house, while in jazz it's crickets... Not sure how many albums Blue Note has released in its history, but if they would put out everything in a series of 100 cd boxes, I'd be interested.

Some of us want the convenience of playing a CD through a stereo system.  A YouTube link won't do that.

So, some us shall choose to buy PD releases.  If you want to go a different route, more power to ya.

Incidentally, aside from the two PD box sets I mentioned, I recently bought on Qobuz a download of seven Sabu albums for $6.99.  I basically wanted it for Safari with Sabu, as I had most of the others on either LP or CD.  So I bought it, and Safari sounded great.  No complaints.

My god, if a person can't be bothered to burn a freaking CD from any digital files they can get....how lazy are they?

Buying cheap crap incentives the overall quality of the product downward.  "Can't make any money off it it"...well, look at how down towards the bottom of the barrel we are now. When the market rewards crap, the market will have more crap fed back to it.

Feeding the animals...this is like bottom feeders eating their own shit.

"PD Releases"...really not a thing, btw. At least not enough of one to be an accurate describer.

Sometimes the PD releases sound better than the YouTube links or the blog uploads.

And do you really think the conglomerates can be any less incentivized to reissue ancient music?  If it hasn't happened by now, it ain't gonna happen.

I was thinking the same thing the other day, actually. I would not be the market for it with jazz like I am the classical boxes, but...yeah. I love those classical boxes, especially the Sony Classics ones that are, like, 20 LPs on 20 CDs, with original LP artwork and the oddball extra cut or two brought in along the way for 40-50 bucks...hell yeah!

The two Vogue sets were like this.

My god, my dogs farts sound better than YouTube audio. If those are the two options to which you're limiting yourself...afraid you've taken this "leisure culture" thing a little to far for your own good....no0t that it's any of my business, it's not as it pertains to you, but please, think of the children.

True.  And you "pay" on YouTube by having to sit through obnoxious commercials.  And how is paying Google/YouTube any better than paying these PD houses?

I'm coming to enjoy these PD boxes.  Sound quality and consistency are getting much better.  I fill in my knowledge about lesser-known musicians and dates that the majors can't be bothered to reissue.  And frankly, I'm getting somewhat pissed at these Japanese reissues.  Virtually none of them have English translations.  Having the entire package in Japanese is a bit obnoxious.  Classical labels long ago knew to print liner notes in other languages, but I recently bought a George Szell title on Sony Japan where I had to Google the album to find out the compositions that were played.

Not that it's any of your business, indeed.  You do your thang, and I'll do mine.

And I guess you skipped over the part in which I stated that I own only two of these, three if you count the Sabu download.

But do, think of the children.

In a world increasingly, suffocatingly cluttered with more or less permanent "disposable" litter, borne of human laziness and lack of basic honorable character, do we need to add YouTube audio and excremental PD MusiPornBoxes?

I believe that children are our future!

But/And seriously - YouTube audio is, at best, an AM transistor radio, only without ballgames, snappy DJs, and clever, professionally crafted (musically and textually!)jingles.

So, actually, not even that good!

Are people seriously using YouTube for listening to music? Of course those PD boxes sound better. Everything sounds better than a YouTube video. Whatever happened with P2P downloading? That’s how I obtain music that isn’t avaible in any source. And I rather do it that way than paying money for such a crappy product with such crappy artwork and crappy sound.

What is the point here? That everybody must hunt bittorrent sites or obscure blogs, just to avoid buying a PD label box set? Because while you're avoiding potential malware, some Andorran character will make a 3 Euro profit? I am not interested myself because of the unappealing aesthetics of many of the PD boxes, but since the artists would neither get one cent from me if I pay 1000 Euro for a rare original LP, why get worked up over some people buying them?

As for YouTube audio, it has support for lossless, so if you want it can be as good as anything. And while some uploads are lo-fi, many others sound much better than AM radio.
