Same here with "The Thespian". Just beautiful the slow version at the beginning and than the boppish romp on those changes......wonderful to play Here Cool Struttin´the title melody. Just the perfect groove, and maybe the best BN cover photo I ever saw. Edited January 23 by Gheorghe

JSngry
I suppose you could extrapolate that out into which opening cuts' bestness was only amplified by the cut or two that follow?

Д.Д.
I did not even have to think of it - for me it's most definitely "Refuge" from Andrew Hill's "Point of Departure" (my favorite Blue Note album). The driving dancing cymbals from the get-go, the voicing of the horns on the theme, all the solos (Kenny Dorham!) - just perfect. And unlike anything else on Blue Note. Eric
Would be fun if we had some poll functionality to determine a winner. Or perhaps that is over-thinking it. Still shilling for "Hat and Beard" 😎 Oh yes and thank-you Peter for "Decision" - love that one.

T.D.
Don't think it's been mentioned, but I have a soft spot for Fuchsia Swing Song on the Sam Rivers album of the same title. You know right away it's not a run-of-the-mill Blue Note release, and the immediately recognizable Jaki Byard isn't on many Blue Notes. Edited January 24 by T.D. Son Of Ice Bag
The winner is - of course ! - Moanin' Mosaic is a great opening track, too, one of my favorites. But Moanin' is not only the greatest track on a Blue Note Album, it is simply one of the greatest Jazz-songs. I could organize a small knock-out with all the selected material. You set two tracks against each other and give everybody one day to vote. The winner goes trough to the next round until you have a winner. Would like to organize that but mostly no one participate in these kind of things as most people just do not like to compare tracks (which I could understand of course). Milestones
This is something of an odd concept, in that I believe virtually every great album opens with a killer track. Has "Passion Dance" (The Real McCoy) been mentioned? Must have been. I nominate 'Breaking Point" by Freddie Hubbard. Also "A Night in Tunisia" by Art Blakey. But one could go on and on with this.
