Jaki Byard, Richard Davis, & Alan Dawson: standout albums w/ at least two of these three (but especially all three) - and any notable lesser known or underrated ones?

Seems like this rhythm section -- Byard, Davis, and Dawson -- recorded together quite a bit.  As a full trio, they're on a metric ton of Booker Ervin dates -- and on a number of Jaki's own leader-dates too (and Jaki also used either Davis or Dawson, but not both, a few times too).

I'm wondering where ELSE these three recorded together (especially all three) -- backing whom? -- and if there are any dates with all three of them that are more obscure or lesser known (but worth tracking down).

And I guess to extend the discussion a little (which, face it, is gonna happen here inevitably anyway)... I suppose we can also include any dates with just two out of all three of them (but please try and point that out, to make it a little easier to distinguish between all the times ALL THREE of them recorded).

Does anyone know of a list of everything all three of them recorded on together?  Maybe we could develop one here.

Surprised that it’s only 3 Booker Ervin dates — because I thought it was like 5 (or maybe even 6?).

But I guess that because there just 3 different Ervin sessions — which only came out spread across like 5 (or is it 6?) different LP’s. Always hard to keep track of without a scorecard (and even then).

I knew and have the Kloss dates, but had no idea of Woods date (in 1974? - wow, lot later than I was imagining this trio working together). And I guess the Eldridge was just a live one-off thing.

But I’m also surprised there weren’t some others I wasn’t aware of — just the Woods, if we’re counting studio dates.

Booker Ervin, The Trance 10/27/65 -  Booker, Jaki, Reggie Workman, Dawson

Booker Ervin, Setting the Pace, date? - Booker, Dexter, Jaki, Reggie, Dawson

Booker Ervin, The Song Book 2/27/64 - Booker, Tommy Flanagan, Richard Davis, Dawson

Booker Ervin, The Blues 6/30/64 - Booker, Carmel Jones, Gildo Mahones, R. Davis, Dawson

that's all the 2/3 dates I can think of

Especially on Prestige in the 50's and 60's.  "Let's scrape up six cuts from different tapes somewhere in the vault and call it an album".

Setting the Pace is from the same recording session as The Trance.

Live at Lennie's on the Turnpike

April 15, 1965

Joe Farrell (ts, ss, fl)
Jaki Byard (p)
George Tucker (b)
Alan Dawson (d)

I own all of the above titles, including the Chuck Florence CD, and wrote the liner notes for The Last From Lennie's from that date.

The producer sent me the leftover unissued takes.

I've yet to hear a bad or even mediocre Jaki Byard recording.

What the hell is this (Prestige – PRCD-24293-2):

Primary

I've never seen this CD in my life. Is it any good?

I see that I can listen/download this on bandcamp. Nice!

I've got that disc, I'm pretty sure -- definitely, I just pulled it off the shelf.  Here's the details...

Tracks 1-8 originally released as 'Grits & Gravy' (Prestige 7486)
Tracks 9-10 previously unissued
Tracks 11-16 as 'First Class Kloss!' (Prestige 7520)

https://www.discogs.com/release/3407629-Eric-Kloss-First-Class (US issue)

https://www.discogs.com/release/4265139-Eric-Kloss-First-Class (German issue)

Identical discs, covers, probably liners too.  The "notes" section of each entry on discogs has different (complimentary, not-conflicting) info.

The vocals on "Grits & Gravy", particularly the title track, don't do much for me. The singer(s) are uncredited.

One that kinda flies under the radar, and is now pretty hard to come by cheaply on any format, is Groovin' High. Leftovers from the Space Book and Blues Book sessions, but the alt take of "The Second" is so killer. One of my favorite Ervin discs that you should definitely check out if you haven't.

Byard's solo on that cut is especially mind-melting.

Would be interested to hear the tracks with "The Rhythm Section"...

Kloss in in way over his head, but he seems to know it and doesn't try to avoid the considerable challenges in front of him. Or behind him, wherever they were.

That's great, Ken!  I'll have to pull out the Lennie's CD and re-read your notes.

Yeah, Land of Giants is one I haven't had on deck in a while -- I remember not thinking as highly of it, maybe that he was "getting in the way" of Ervin and company. Should reinvestigate as it's just sitting in the racks.

Agreed, and totally understandable.  He was 17 and 18 years old when those albums were recorded.
