ep1str0phy
Agreed about "Hey Jude", "Ghosts"... I'll go for Dudu Pukwana's "MRA" (of all time? Maybe not, but it sounds anthemic enough). On "Won't Get Fooled Again"--ambivalent feelings for many, apparently. I wouldn't call it the most unlikely anthem of all time, but it's certainly left the bar in the dust in the way of transcending composer intent. I think there's a large enough camp that deals with that one as part of the liberal zeitgeist and, well, the people make the anthem, right? Shawn
Not vouching for quality...but hard rock has TONS of anthems... We're Not Gonna Take It - Twisted Sister Cum On Feel The Noize - Slade/Quiet Riot Living After Midnight/You Got Another Thing Comin'/Hell Bent For Leather (and many more) - Judas Priest The Boys Are Back In Town - Thin Lizzy Every Kiss song ever recorded.... clifford_thornton
First thought was Albert Ayler. Guess I'll go with "Bells". Yup.
ep1str0phy
(wit reference to chuck and clifford's posts...) A little further on, I'd say that essentially everything he played with his horns-and-strings ensembles was pretty anthemic. "Truth Is Marching In" is like the soundtrack to the revolution. clifford_thornton
Can - "Mother Sky" (or Swell Maps' "Full Moon in my Pocket") Both fine '70s psychedelic minimalist anthems... and I can't get the basslines out of my head. Edit to clarify that the Swell Maps' version is a punk homage to the Can tune. Edited February 10, 2007 by clifford_thornton

The Magnificent Goldberg
This thread has made me realize: Most "anthem" songs really, really suck. Yes - they're supposed to be ideal for a hundred thousand amateurs to sing. MG
(BB)
This thread has made me realize: Most "anthem" songs really, really suck. I was thinkin' the same thing. It might be in part because so many of these songs got played to death, over and over and over again. And then played some more and then put on anthologies of songs that were played too much. BruceH
How about your favorite "would be" anthem? That is, an anthemic song that never became even a small hit. My vote: "It Must Be Summer" by Fountains of Wayne, from the Utopia Parkway album.
