How's the weather?

Hot & windy, with very thick smoke from the Glass Fire. We expect an evacuation order sometime today or tomorrow, the fire is at the boarder of Rutherford, and we're next in line. Plus, there's a new fire, Campbell Fire, that is right above us, it's smaller, but we'll see what happens.

That is worrisome. Be safe Matthew and good luck.

A winery I really like (Behrens) burned down. Others too.

Thanks for the good wishes, it seems as if we will be sticking around, there's been no word about having to leave. AQI is now at 306 here, I'm drinking water constantly to clear my throat.

Well then you can pee on the flames. Or save some of that water.

Fourteen straight hours with no power last night (after two hours of power preceded by five hours with no power), while temperature plunged to Minus 2 F.

You have my sympathy. What was the lowest on the thermostats? Or do you have electronic ones and don't know?

Due to high demand or technical failures?

There are power failures in Athens too, due to this strange snowfall that goes on for 48 hours that collapsed overhead power cables.

Best and warmest wishes.

Not as bad as it might have been--it was 45 F early this morning inside. Finally the power came on and then went off (repeat and repeat)--bascially about six hours of power spread across the day.

Well, we are having a highly unusual level of cold weather across the entire state, sending demand very high (but not as high as we have during heat waves in the summer). However, it appears the power generation companies did not do what was recommended the last time something similar happened about ten years ago--to appropriately winterize the power generators, resulting in many generators failing in the extreme cold and collapsing supply while demand was peaking. We also have the situation where the power industry has been privatized, so the industry is not really operated like a government monopoly utility any more. That may have something to do with it (what's the profit in preparing for the worse case scenario?) In addition, Texas has a large investment in wind power, which has been said to be failing at this point in the extreme cold.
