I bought a bunch of Steeplechase CDs from Tommy's Jazz a few years ago and I'm still waiting for them to replace a Ronnie Cuber disc that was a CD-R. I've about given up on it, to be honest, but since I did pay for a CD that I never got, I'm still a little upset with them over it.

I'm in the same boat, but with around NINE CD-Rs that I paid for, sent back, but still haven't been replaced, or refunded. I stopped buying from Tommy after that.

  2. Just listened to this on Apple Music and while I am not near as familiar as many here with Mingus' music, this is an extremely enjoyable listen. Sound quality is excellent. I'll definitely be picking it up digitally and physically at some point. Pullen is fantastic. Kirk is amazing.

Most of all, the music just seems so vibrant and alive. Hard to believe it was recorded almost 40 years ago.

Yes, they're noticeably better and really draw you in, so it's strange the Tone Poet should sound so close to the domestic CDs.

I have both versions (twofer & SHMs) of the State...... & agree that the SHMs are superb

Another vote of satisfaction for the SHM CDs. Don't have a vinyl setup, but the SHM CDs are a substantial improvement over the domestic CDs, even on my lower-range system, and certainly when I'm listening on my Samsung Buds Live.

  4. All the Mingus Candid discs have arrived in my household. I've only listened to Mingus, but it sounds very good. I don't have the Mosaic, but it is a noticeable improvement on a previous Japanese release I had. Only three, not five tracks, though.

  5. I've had the privilege of seeing Grant Stewart live an in person at Smalls (obviously several years ago). After seeing him live, I've seemed to pick up anything he's on. Great show and great experience.

FYI I'm also a fan of Eric Alexander and have seen him live with One For All. Since I'm too young to have seen the original masters at their prime, I perhaps am more inclined to appreciate and even be influenced by the those living the scene today. Who knows. Perhaps it is a function of, for example, only having seen a shell of Lou Donaldson at his age live. [shrugs] Sonny Rollins on the other hand was still bringing it even ~five years ago when I saw him.

Maybe my perspective is skewed given my age. I'm just happy people are still making vibrant music and this jazz music we all love is managing to carry on.

As for Smalls I've been a longtime financial supporter and may even sponsor a show one of these days. It's a great venue and I always try to visit when I am visiting New York.

I didn't buy many of those 32XD CDs back in the day. If my memory isn't failing me, the "32" was shortened from 32,000 as in 32,000 Yen - the list price. That was a lot of US dollars back then. And yes, 55XD meant 55,000 Yen.

Wow, that's crazy! That's about $30 and $50 per CD.

I'm glad many Japanese reissues are only 1,000 Yen these days.

    Agreed

    Seconded.

The Japanese reissues I purchased in the past few months (many) and listened to (a much smaller subset thus far) sound great. In fact I am positive at least some of them reuse the old BN Works masterings if that's your thing. I am thinking in particular of Andrew Hill's Black Fire, which sounds identical to my BN Works CD.

  11. I am a subscriber and find it worthwhile as well. I did the middle tier. You get instant access to all new releases on the Greenleaf label, which is quite active.

Obviously I like Douglas' his music and the music of his frequent collaborators like Matt UIery, Rudy Royston, Linda Oh, and Donny McCaslin.
