Bill Dixon Orchestra - Intents and Purposes [international Phonopraph]
Ordered this album also some months ago, but that order never arrived unfortunately. Hopefully I have more luck this time.
Other Dimensions in Music - Now! [1998, AUM Fidelity]
William Parker - Double Sunrise over Neptune [2008, AUM Fidelity]
Trio X - Live in Vilnius [2008, NoBusiness, double vinyl]

RIP Mr. Coleman, truly one of the biggest legends in Jazz.
-
Yeah, I'm very exited about the venue and I'm luckily not really afraid of heights.
Nowadays I work most of the week in Utrecht near Central Station (100m from the Dom) so that makes a trip to the Bimhuis quite easy. I'm definitely planning on going more often.
-
Well, not tonight but I just bought tickets for the Louis Moholo Moholo Quartet (Jason Jarde, Alexander Hawkins, John Edwards) next week in the Bimhuis which I'm quite exited about.
Do you go to the Bimhuis often?
To be honest, this will be my first time. Till last year I never really went to Jazz concerts as all of my friends are in different "scene's" (mostly house, hip-hop and/or the funk/soul/jazz DJ scene), but this year I decided to just go by myself if a great concert comes up.

that's not audience, that's musicians he's worked with. I should have clarified that we were talking about market. And his market, based on what I've seen, is old people who think this is young peoples' music
Well, I have to say that here in the Netherlands I see mostly people in their 20's and and 30's, and who mostly go to party's where a mixture of house/hiphop/jazz/funk/soul is played by DJ's talk about this album (surely the FlyLo and Kendrik Lamar connection and the fact it is released on the very hipster Brainfeeder records triggered them to listen). I haven't listened to the album myself, but here I see this guy is getting the same "hype" from young people that musicians like Christian Scott and Robert Glasper also got.

Coming out soon on NotTwo, very exited about this one!

Just finished:
Louis Couperus - Van oude Mensen, de dingen, die voorbijgaan (Old People and the Things that Pass)
Great novel that has some resemblance to his masterpiece "De Boeken der Kleine Zielen (Small Souls)".
And now started:
Stendhal - De Kartuize van Parma (The Charterhouse of Parma)

I have several vinyls from Nobusiness, and although they maybe don't stand out sound wise I have no problems with them either (but of course everybody has different standards/preferences when listening to music). I also bought the Tribal Ghost album, and think it is fantastic! One of my most played records of the last few years, and I'm quite sure you won't regret your purchase if you loved the short clips you heard.
-
Apart from the VPI and SME players I think these look pretty hideous. What's the betting that all that over engineering doesn't repay dividends to the listener. Mind you I'm sure there are plenty of people who would consider my Well Tempered Amadeus TT to be excessive ( and ugly). I would of course disagree.............apart from the it being ugly.
Yes, I agree (with the looking hideous part). I definitely can't see anything "art" in them, to me most of the players above look like über kitsch.

Mikołaj Trzaska, Devin Hoff, Michael Zerang - Sleepless in Chicago [2013, Nobusiness]

No 'vacation pay' here but I did order the Delius/Brice/Sanders yesterday as well. That Nuts album is strong
Yes, I'm really excited for that (Delius/Brice/Sanders) album! I loved Brice's Immune to Clockwork album from last year on Multikulti and still play that one quite a lot, and really like the Brice/Sanders combo in the Riverloam trio with Trzaska.
-
In the Netherlands, May is traditionally the month workers get paid their "vacation money" (I don't know if this concept is known outside of the Netherlands?), so I thought an extra order was justifiable:
Joe McPhee & Michael Zerang - Creole Gardens (A New Orleans Suite) [2011, NoBusiness, vinyl]
Olie Brice, Tobias Delius, Mark Sanders - Somersaults [2015, Two Rivers]
Giovanni di Domenico & Alexandra Grimal - Chergui [2014, Ayler]
Nuts - Symphony for Old and New Dimensions [2009, Ayler]

Looks like Niels is having the most fun among all of us. Reminds me of when jazz was new to me.
Yes. Reminds me of when music in general was new to me. I'd buy a new album, listen to it excitedly and steadily for a week, and get to know it well. Not like today.
Well, I don't know if I have the most fun among everybody, but I certainly still enjoy my search for new and adventurous music big time. Luckily, I can still be surprised, enthusiastic and blown away by newly discovered music.
I have to say, I think this also partly has to do with the fact that I stopped using Spotify and/or downloads as a serious way of listening to music a few years ago. I really only seriously listen to music I bought on CD or vinyl, and I also like the hunting/collecting aspect of that all. As someone with a fantastic job, but not a fantastic salary, I really have to think about my purchases. In the end I think this results in a very thought through collection with almost only stuff I really love, and little to none mediocrity (regarding my personal standards/preferences)

Lotte Anker, Craig Taborn, Gerald Cleaver - Triptych [2005, Leo]
Nobuyasu Furuya Trio (Nobuyasu Furuya, Gabriel Ferrandini, Hernani Faustino) - Bendowa [2009, Clean Feed]
I have these two and like them quite a bit. A bit of a mystery to me that neither Anker nor Furuya have caught on in a big way, although they certainly have their followings.
I have to say, I never heard of Furuya myself, but being a fan of the RED trio, I thought this could be an interesting purchase.
As for Lotte Anker, I think she has a beautiful sound and definitely deserves more attention. The other two albums with Taborn and Cleaver are both really great (Floating Islands I would even consider brilliant), so I couldn't let their debut album go by.

Started to re-read "The Black Book" by Orhan Pamuk. Pamuk is one of those authors who I just HAVE to read once in a while.

I feel like I'm still in my "early days" of discovering Jazz, and so in these days there are many players I discover or just start to discover at any point in time. At this moment, a few players that have caught my interest and in who I want to investigate more are:
Benjamin Duboc
Alexandra Grimal
Mikolaj Trzaska
Michael Zerang
Lotte Anker
Satoko Fujii
Joelle Leandre

That's a coincidence, I just stumbled upon that release this weekend looking for some Michael Zerang records (after being very impressed by the Sleepless in Chicago record by Mikolaj Trzaska). The line up for this album is definitely very strong, and I really liked the fact that the album is influenced by middle eastern songs, but I have to admit that after listening to the songs on the bandcamp page the whole thing left me a little bit underwhelmed. As for my personal taste, I would prefer the middle eastern influence to be much stronger. To me, this "just" sounded like very well played modern Jazz, but I didn't really feel that they caught the heart of what I would consider middle eastern music/culture (but then again, what do I know as a white European atheist from the Netherlands).

Actually I think €18,- is a fair price for a vinyl album, but if you order from NoBusiness directly shipping can get quite pricey.
For this, I tend to order from Multikulti (Poland) if I buy more items ( I paid around €7 for shipping two vinyl albums and two CD's).

The Group (Ahmed Abdullah, Marion Brown, Billy Bang, Sirone, Fred Hopkins, Andrew Cyrille) - Live [2012, NoBusiness]
It can't be stressed enough, how great it is to have labels like NoBusiness around who do a fantastic job of making this historically important music available to us. But besides the historical importance, this is just also a great album to listen to.
Mikolaj Trzaska, Devin Hoff, Michael Zergang - Sleepless in Chicago [2013, NoBusiness]
For some reason Trzaska is one of the (what I call) power players who I just really love. Although his sound can get real aggressive and forceful, there's also always heart and spirituality to his playing which makes him stand out against many others for me.

Unfortunately the Leandre/Cooke was not in stock anymore, so replaced it for another NoBusiness vinyl:
The Group (Ahmed Abdullah, Marion Brown, Billy Bang, Sirone, Fred Hopkins, Andrew Cyrille) - Live [2012, NoBusiness, vinyl]
-
Joëlle Léandre & India Cooke - Journey [2010, NoBusiness, vinyl]
Mikołaj Trzaska, Davin Hoff, Michael Zerang - Sleepless in Chicago [2013, Nobusiness, vinyl]
Lotte Anker, Craig Taborn, Gerald Cleaver - Live at the Loft [2009, Ilk Music]
Switchback (Waclaw Zimpel, Klaus Kugel, Hilliard Greene, Mars Williams) - s/t [2015, Multikulti]
Bobby Bradford & John Carter - No U Turn [2015, Dark Tree Roots serries]

The disc with Kowald & Drake is fantastic, can't go wrong with that one. That being said, I think Blue Winter (on Eremite) is my favorite Fred Anderson album in my collection.

On that day, they will also release a new William Parker 3 CD box, on which Eri Yamamoto will also be playing:
