I'd like to track down the Bert Wilson dates which feature Sonny Simmons, out on Bert's Bert's Wheelz label.  Anyone have any ideas?  larryb@cruzio.com  also, I put together an attempt at a Sonny Simmons sessionography if anyone is interested

Any progress on this? I would really love to hear those Wheelz cdrs.

The only release that has eluded me is the LA Octet recording on the Japanese Americana label - never seen a copy of this for sale - have been looking for a number of years now - wondered if it had actually been physically released (CD). The lineup is very similar to the live Verona, Italy concert I have - they are only 3 months apart - Verona has Arthur Blythe on tenor whilst Rastine Calhoun replaces Arthur on the later LA recording.

I've been looking for that one for a long time as well. I saw it once in person once in the late 90's but did not want to drop $35. Still kicking myself.

  3.  One of the great disappointments for me was the death of the Geodesic label. They released 3 items from the CAC archives then went poof. Well worth acquiring!

A little bit of history on the CAC can be found in their "about" page. I seem to recall a few well written articles about that scene either online or in print but can't lay my hands on them right now.

There are some full concerts (streaming only) archived on the site. Worth poking around.

Oh my…. Thanks so much for noticing! Mal did not record a lot those last years of the ‘70’s. Also: time to write a new review :)

this might turn out to be a good year for Mal Waldron fans. End of this year or beginning of 2023 Sam records will release an unissued trio session by Mal from 1970. Now that was one hell of a strong period for Mal!

Any idea on who is in the trio Pim?

    Okay. What about Jouk Minor?

Is he a soft giouk or a hard yook?

And is it short for something?

I actually asked a French friend these questions a year ago and he acted like I had gone insane and claimed that there was no such name, which I felt was harsh.

    soft giouk

last name pronounced meenore, emphasis on the nore.

What an excellent musician he is!

  6. Archie Shepp: saxophone, piano
    Bill Dixon: trumpet
    Don Warren: bass
    Howard McGray: drums
    Perry Robinson: clarinet

Recorded live at the Helsinki Conservatory August 2nd 1962 as part of the
World Festival of Youth and Students for Peace and Friendship.

This is a great performance. Have had a copy of this for some time, great to know others are liking it!

  7. Well my friend you snooze you lose! It's happened to me there too.

I've been acquainted with this store owner and store since 1984 when I first got my driver's license. Some of the best bargains of my (music collecting) life found there. Probably the best single day was around 1989-90 or so? My brother was in there in the morning (I was working for some extra $$, it was a Saturday) and said the owner had a bunch of records I might like "Sun Ra and some other stuff". Of course I flew over there. I found around 25 original mint Byg/Actuel titles, all of the Sun Ra on ABC impulse stuff and a dozen or so rarities (Shepp, Bill Dixon, Cherry). I got 45 or so lps for $300. A fortune for me then, but well worth the price at most any given point in time. What pains me the most is that all the Sun Ra Saturn stuff had been there just a few hours earlier. And who knows what else....
