I'm envious that in Germany, even smaller regional opera houses, not just the biggies in Berlin, Munich and Bayreuth, seem to do frequent Ring cycles

Great to see Braxton programmed and appearing at this year's Proms. I'll be there
That's great! Ilan Volkov is such a champion of new music.

saxophone and viola and piano!

I haven't gotten mine yet. Anyone else?

When did record release dates become standardized across the US? In the 1990s I know Tuesday was the release day for almost all labels, now it's Friday.

Two different groups, trio and quartet. I ordered.
Just reading back through the thread and see I wasn't overly impressed by box set releases nearly four years ago, lives and opinions change 😃
I mixed you up with mjzee!

Wayne's orchestra/chamber projects greatly interest me. Compositions.
How far along did him & Esperanza get on that opera?
It was premiered complete, we need a recording or video.

yeah I am so glad I pay for the subscription, I've learned so much. Are there any other Jazz substacks worth reading?

I heard this song 1991 or so on WXCI, never heard Can before--sent me on a subsequent journey--an abstract James Brown? I'm there!

I use wikipedia now or discogs for the info I used to get from AllMusic. Haven't been to Allmusic since the maybe early Obama administration.

I always had the impression he was in the "good, not great" category.

@DIS Maybe you could ask around any Washington DC record stores, or Second Story Books?
Maybe these guys?

I saw all of Smith's 2019 Big Ears performances and didn't see a snit. That would be very out of character of him!

welp, that's on me

Huh,a Google search shows he was a Washington DC-area band leader, and founded a precision ball bearing business, died in 2011. A link to his obituary in the Washington Post won't work for me, and won't let me embed it here.

A lot of "Mojo Magazine" jazz at this festival, one reason I've soured on it.
I'd be back if they bring Wadada Leo Smith, Roscoe Mitchell, or Anthony Braxton back like in the pre-covid times.

Volume 7 is available on Quobuz today

In the letter to Coleman Hawkins, he puts a lot of emphasis on being a "MAN", which in context, seems to Sonny to mean taking responsibility and keeping healthy in mind and body. Those are always good values to have, but I credit his equating it with "manliness" to the times. I'm sure Sonny would use less gendered language today.
-
Very early, when I was getting into jazz, I was sort of listening to Sonny chronologically, but the RCA stuff when I got to it, blew my punk rock and 90s techno-trained ears away

Chuck don't release no junk on his label!

I've followed the series on Chandos, I've found stimulating music in them all, but my favorite is Symon Laks.
-
Yes but some of us (me, ahem) didn't see this news at the time. Obviously, it has a bearing on his legacy.

I'm not as plugged in as you guys, and I must have missed discussion here about his behavior, but Cadence was an absolute formative influence on my listening two/three decades ago, and bought a lot of music by mail order from him.
He must have gotten over his antipathy to Anthony Braxton since Braxton is on a number of CIMP releases. I don't recall reading anything negative about Braxton in the years I read Cadence.
Update: Just searched the archives and GAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

I'm wondering if the Sony person meant "bandwidth" as in literal bandwidth for the high-res files or as in "we have too much to do and not enough people at this moment,"
