    YES, this is one of my all time favorite Maynard albums. Issued in the mid-1960's on the short-lived Mainstream label. It was originally issued on LP under the title "Color Him Wild". There is something about this album that keeps me coming back; I think it is the nice balance/mix of material. Not only does he show off his inimitable solo chops on tunes like "Airegin" but there is a great version of "Three More Foxes" here that fascinated me back when I was a young trumpeter in highschool. However I think it is the warm ballad artistry of the sax section (Lanny Morgan, Willie Maiden, Ronnie Cuber) on Maiden's composition "Tinsel" and the easy going loper "This Night" that really sunk in and hooked me.

    It is a real shame that this album has not been more widely available during the CD era. Hopefully it will see new light in the download era. I was able to nab a used CD copy in it's reincarnation as "Dues" sometime ago.

    Don't get your hopes up. I'll be shocked if you actually receive it. Walmart is notorious for listing OOP CDs as available and will accept your order and then later send you an email informing you the item is no longer available............

    I decided that I did not want to listen any more to the pops and surface noise in my vinyl copy of Rahsaan Roland Kirk's "Bright Moments" set, and that I would get the CD version.

    I was surprised to find that it is out of print in CD, and that the CDs command high prices on Amazon.com and ebay.com, from a low of $35, to $85 and over.

    However, I found a new CD copy for under $15 online from........WALMART!

    I like to patronize local, independently owned businesses instead of Walmart, but there is no local, independently owned business in my town with Bright Moments in stock.

    The Walmart online site has a decent jazz inventory, overall.

    Concord went through a corporate downsizing around the end of March. Brandi, their most knowledgeable and helpful customer relations staff person was one of the casualities. One should not expect the same level of service from these folks. Unfortunately I think this is a case of doing less with less...........

    The big push with Concord now is with mp3s (Yuck).

    Hello,

    I use a software called DC7 (http://diamondcut.com/osc/product_info.php?products_id=64). This has preset filters with code written to deal with wow and flutter as well as clicks and crackles in LP's. I use this software in conjunction with an M Audio sound card and have had very good results in transferring tape to disc via a Nakamichi CR7 tape deck.

    If you do not want to set up this protocol, send me a copy of the tape and I would be glad to remaster it for you free of charge.

    Wow and flutter could be caused by the mechanism of the cassette itself. Those little pads that hold the tape against the heads in the cassette disintegrate and thus you don't have enough pressure to hold the tape against the heads correctly.

    Transferring the actual tape to a new cassette housing can solve the problem.

    I do a fair amount of this kind of work; am now restoring a 36 CD set of blues. did all of my jazz set - wow and flutter cannot be handled easily; there may be something out there than can do it, but I am not aware of it - as for hum, it is tricky, but actually relatively easy to remove in most cases, depending how frequency-invasive it is. Digital parametric eq (which I use) can do amazing things by notching the hum at specific frequency - if your friend wants to send me a cassette, or, even better, a CDR sample, I can listen to it and let him know if it is worth pursuing. Most things can be improved hugely, but it does really vary depending on the original source. Most engineers, also, know next to nothing about EQ, about which, without wanting to, I have become quite expert. And EQ is, ultimately, the key to restoration, in my opinion -

    I have a friend on the East Coast (USA) that has a couple of cassette recordings he made of live Jazz sessions during the early 1980's that he has digitized but is unsatisfied with the results. The recordings were done in small clubs with a portable cassette recorder set up on a table. The individual who made the recordings was a friend of the artists and I believe he had their approval to make the recordings.

    In any event the recordings have sentimental value to my friend and he would like to restore the sound as much as reasonably possible. He has identified the problems with one of the tapes to be "wow and flutter" while the other has some background hum and other extraneous noise that he would like to have eliminated. He has no interest in releasing the recordings commercially but customarily provides copies to any of the surviving artists. He is willing to pay a reasonable amount to have the work done. I am assuming he can provide both the original cassette tapes if needed as well as CD-Rs of the digitized files.

    I would appreciate any recommendations of individuals that are capable of doing this sort of work. You can either post your suggestions here or send me a PM if you prefer.

    Hmmm........... Thanks for the tip Ron. I dont' have that one. Nice review on the AMG. I will have to keep an eye out for that one but I have a feeling it won't be easy to come by. Unfortunately it's unavailable from Amazon and listed as out of stock on the JoKen website as well.

    Hopefully the reason for Ralph's absence of late on record is due to his busy schedule with the Tonight Show band.

    To my ears he has one of the most appealing sounds on the tenor sax and I really enjoy his improvisations as well. I believe I have all of his own albums and many of his appearances under others direction (e.g. Horace Silver, Ray Brown, Brian Lynch, Freddie, JJ., etc.). After the early 1990's he is virtually nowhere to be seen on record. I know he was with the Tonight Show Band for a while.

    Anyone seen or heard of him recently? I understand he still resides on the West Coast.

  20. Audacity question about inserting or separating tracks

    After trying out Audacity to digitize my vinyl and tape collection I stumbled upon GoldWave Digital Audio Editor which I have found to be much more intuitive, has more features and is generally easier to work with. Regarding creating seperate tracks for each tune: This can be done either on the fly with a click of a mouse button or you can "drop" a click into the finished product after the fact if you have recorded an entire side of an LP. GoldWave also has an option to insert track markers automatically based on the existance and duration of silence, the levels of which are adjustable.

    It costs about $45 US but you get all updates for free and they provide access to their user forums. Easily one of the best software purchases I have made. It is available only via the web.

    I record a lot of vinyl onto cdr using a standalone burner. usually I record one side of an lp as one track. On the cdr, using audacity (or if there is an easier program let me know) how can I separate the recording into individual songs? i.e. One track = one song.

    Regarding that version of Impressions that you speak of, it sounds alot like the version that he played when i saw him last, which in turn sounds very similar to the version played by Herbie Hancock & friends on the "Directions in Music" CD.

    Just got back from a week in New York. Although we caught a few Broadway shows the high point for us (my wife, 15 yr. old daughter and I) was hearing Pat Martino's quartet at the Iridium.

    Pat's group included Rick Germanson (Piano), Paul Gill (Bass), and Scott Allan Robinson (Drums).

    I am almost embarassed to say that while I have several of Pat's albums this was the first time I have heard him perform live. What a wonderful experience it was. Aparently Pat performs a 3 or 4 day gig at the Iridium each year.

    He stuck pretty much to his tried and true repertoire; bebop standards, blues and his well honed originals. I guess the most fascinating selection for me was his rendition of Coltrane's Impressions which he took at a very slow bluesy tempo but with somewhat of a Rhumba beat. I presume this is his trademark rendition. It gave the tune a whole 'nother feeling as opposed to Trane's blazing pace. He also performed a tune entitled "Mac Tough"; his tribute to Jack McDuff who he mentioned had alot to do with his return to performing following his memory loss.

    His pianist (Rick Germanson) appeared to be the strongest link in the supporting trio and a wonder to watch as well as hear. A very agressive performer when given the opoportunity to take over the lead.

    All-in-all a very exhilorating set to say the least. Highly recommended to anyone out there that may have the opportunity in the coming months to see Pat..........

    BTW, the club was filled to capacity for the second set which began officially at 9:30 (music didn't really begin until nearly 10:00).

    Nice to see the Big Apple can still support mainstream jazz of the highest caliber.

    BTW, the cheesecake was delicious......
