  1. I always post here too late - I read here but never think of posting!

Anyway, if you're in the East Midlands I'm playing tomorrow. I've been commissioned by Derby Jazz to write a piece about the Orrery which appears in a painting by Joseph Wright.

I'll be on vibes and conducting, with

    Dave Kane - bass

    Joshua Blackmore - drums

    Graham Clark - violin

    Tony Kofi - baritone saxophone

    Jan Kopinksi - tenor saxophone

    Deborah Jordan - voice

    Julian Siegel - bass clarinet

    Alex Suckling - trumpet

Orrery will be played twice: first, as a promenade piece that uses the whole space in which the audience stands; and second as a more conventional set-up with chairs. Hope to see you there!

  2. Hello,

In case anyone is in the U.K. and fancies a trip to Derby, Mat Maneri and Lucian Ban [known as DECO HEART] are currently touring Europe and will be hitting these shores in about a week. They're in London with Evan Parker at the Vortex on May 17th; then Newcastle on May 18th.

They then come to Derby on May 19th at 6:30p.m. You can read more details and reserve a seat here.

Also, trumpeter Nick Malcolm's quartet with Alexander Hawkins, Olie Brice and Mark Whitlam is heading here on its Jazz Services tour. As I'll be depping for Alex the next day in Bristol I'm sitting in. They'll reach here on May 31st, 8pm. Details/tickets here.

    All the best!

  3. Hello! Just to let whoever sees this know that I've got a gig in Leeds this Sunday with a couple of great musicians: bassist Dave Kane and pianist Alex Hawkins [who posts here].

The address: Seven Arts, 31A Harrogate Road, Leeds LS7 3PD

It starts at 1.30pm and it's £5 or £4 to get in!

All the details are here: http://www.coreymwamba.co.uk/gig/trio-1327843800

    All the best,

    C.

  4. Corey - you said it - only one thing on my mind on the Saturday ;) - no, not playing! Are you playing during the day?

Yep. Set with Robert Mitchell, then (I think) an improv free-for-all. Dom's on it, too! 2pm. Then I'll park the contraption somewhere and we'll have "NUFF" jokes; and then in the evening get to the deep listening...

  5. Hello,

    • drummer Josh Blackmore,

    and me on vibes.

    Our dates:

If there's any chance anyone makes it to any of these, come say hello!

    All the best,

    C.

  6. Hey Corey - no time to test just now, but great idea - really useful! Will check it out later!

Hope all cool with you - A

Cool! I was a bit ill, which is why I thought of doing it the first place - feverish dreams...

I can't embed any in the forum [understandably] but it will embed in any pages you make... I have added formatting of time signature and slash chords now too. It is free to use non-commercially.

  7. I listen to FLAC [and where space is an issue like on the laptop, Ogg] mainly, although most of my music is on CD. I have some vinyl, but my record player died a while back. I still buy and sell CDs. In fact, I actually removed the downloads section from my site through lack of demand! I sell way more CDs. People seem to much prefer the physical product. Well, here, anyway.

It doesn't cost more to do 96 though some engineers think 88.2 translates better to cds.

That sounds like the Nyquist theorem. I remember an engineer that had been in the business a while giving me a ticking-off about that, saying that it didn't work. I think he was essentially saying "record at the highest quality you can", which I obviously wasn't disagreeing with. But I'd be interested to know what you'd heard...

  8. Corey

This is exactly the place for you to plug! I'll try and make it - I saw you play with Tony Kofi at the QEH when he was doing the complete Monk compositions (I seem to remember you had to leave early to get back to Derby) and really, really, enjoyed your playing.

    Are tickets available in advance?

    Good luck

    Denis

    Hello,

Thanks very much! I did have to get back home that day - it was insane.

I'm not sure but if you let me know that you're definitely coming along I'll get them to put aside as many tickets as you need.

  9. Hello,

Don't usually post my gigs here so apologies if this is the wrong place: but I'm taking part in a series of solos on Thursday 2nd September, 8.30p.m.: and if you can make it, it'd be great to see you.

The event is called Accidental Powercut, which was set up by poet/DJ Charlie Dark. On the bill is Talvin Singh, Tinashe and me. Apparently we're known for doing electronic music[?] and so all the sets are acoustic in nature. I play vibes and it's in a chapel space, so I'm looking forward to that! It's being recorded and I'm getting a copy, so I'll make it available as soon as I can.

    The location:

    House of St Barnabas

    1 Greek Street

    London

    W1D 4NQ

Tickets are £5 per concert, and limited to 60 per performer: all proceeds are going to the House of St Barnabas, which helps homeless people develop skills for life and work.

    Cheers,

    C.

  10. Is it this video?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEvqGVV3qsA

I can see a link [cf. the Complexes] - but "prime" might be pushing it...

It reminds me a bit of the opening of Bach's Chromatic Fantasy:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGO0wbRdI4Y

but it's a small fragment of Hancock's musical statement - there's the whole rest of the solo to consider. And as he studied classical piano, what are the odds he got it from a piece he had been taught? But still: it's really interesting to hear the coincidences! Sent me on a Tristano/Gould trip today.

  11. The pianist Chris Anderson was a major influence on him and his teacher/mentor. Also from Chicago...

    http://www.mapleshaderecords.com/cds/56922.php

There are a few samples on there - but there is a beautiful [and in my opinion, better] solo album called From The Heart, where you can hear the "blood line", so to speak.

  12. Threadgill's music has consistently be an ongoing orgasm for people like me who like to hear drummers...in the music. Don't know that I've ever heard a Threadgill record where the drumming is anything less than distinctively outstanding.

YES! His drummers are quite incredible. I was thinking a couple of days ago listening to 'Makin' a Move' (the Very Very Circus album, rather than the group) how awesome Pheeroan sounds with Threadgill...all the Sextett stuff obviously, but the VVC soundworld too...in fact, his rhythm sections just groove like absolute crazy...watching that Very Very Circus video...how could you not PLAY over that vibe!?!

One of the amazing things about Threadgill's music to me is how it completely shatters/sidesteps the 'accessibility'/'innovation'/'avant garde'-type debates...it's new as you like, in the tradition as you like, totally individual as you like, weird as you like, familiar as you like, grooving like mad...

In agreement there... his voice is purely about music. And the drummers are all killing [and the one in Zooid is certainly worth a look:

    http://pirecordings.com/artist/Elliot+Humberto_Kavee

I'm loving his flow and space!]

    Thank you again, all.

  13. Just to avoid any possible misunderstanding, Pi is the label. There's three Threadgill albums on the label, one quite recent, and all excellent.

That's all right - I understood you :) Its catalogue is fascinating - thanks for the heads-up.

It was the Wire transcript I had read previously. For reference:

    http://thewire.co.uk/articles/3251/

I've been doing some more reading, and video watching in lieu of listening. The Zooid group is certainly hitting the spot.

  14. Thanks everyone! Perversely, when I listened to Air about 13 years ago, I didn't like it. But tastes change, so a re-listening is in order. I suspect that I prefer his newer stuff though. So

For those who like to buy new stuff, the latest Pi release is a gem, as were the two prior to it.

I will be checking out Pi.

Hey Corey - we should have had this conversation the other day - I'm something of a Threadgill junkie!!!

Blast. Right then, I'll have to nab you when I next see you. Which I hope will be soon! I might have some news... :)

As suggested above, I'd definitely get this...'Song Out Of My Trees' is perhaps my favourite Threadgill...and that collection gives you a good sampling of earlier stuff...

That looks tasty... will be acquiring next week. Those videos are fantastic!

Which interview were you reading? Was it the complete text of the recent Wire thing? That's online somewhere...I found that completely inspirational...

Maybe the recent Threadgill feature in Signal to Noise?

I can't remember which one it was now... I think it may have been a PDF, but then again... But I have found an appraisal of the album I listened to:
